i decided to give Lord of the Ring Onlinea shot and am downloading the client file now. in the mean time, i would like to know if this is gonna be a good game. my only experience with the genre of mmorpg is with WoW, which ended sourly. what i don't like about the game includes --

1. excessive grinding. this is the thing i hate most about the game. it may or may not be the common case of the genre, i don't know. but as for WoW per se, i simply couldn't stand it. the generic mob design didn't help too.

2. the community. for a game of 2 million players ( i'm playing the us version ), i encountered a terribly high amount of lousy players -- whiners, ummatures, elitists, you name it. so far i haven't met a single soul that's really helping the community....as if the only way of having fun in that game is spoiling others'. :?

3. official downloader/updater ran like crap. in this case Lotro does better so far.

now, the point of this thread isn't to bash WoW. other mmorpgs are just as likely to suffer from these short comings, i don't know. what i want to know is, is whether Lotro does better in terms of what i've just mentioned? what are the pros and cons of this game? i would like to hear from you.

by the way, no thanks to fanboy.

1. The thing I like abotu LOTRO is that grinding isn't really needed. You get so much XP from quests, you'll be spending the majority of your time just completely the multitude of quests that are always available.

2. The community, from what I've experienced, seem more major than the norm for MMOs. I don't say that with a bias since I spent some time with WoW and EQ, and I must say that the general community is a lot of fun to be around in game.

3. The official downloader runs quite quickly as you will notice and you should have no problem whatsoever with it.

It's basically a slower paced wow with less grinding and a better community. Updater seems to be fine. No matter what your rig is you'll still find that every once in a while the game will do something odd. Ie. You get stuck on the loading screen and have to exit game to get back to playing, you lag so bad you run in place for 15 seconds or so, you'll see someone hanging in the air like they are doing a trinity from matrix karate jump...

All that said, I really enjoy the game.

like every MMORPG?

But in LOTRO even those quests feel important. All quests have a meaning.

Especially those epic quests. Gives a meaning to do instances.

It's as bad as world of warcraft, turbine don't understand what the concept of "fun" is, running around for hours on end doing nothing, killing things over and over which requires no skill, just pure repetition, you are paying to work, not enjoy yourself, terrible game.

LOTRO is very much like WoW in terms of gameplay, leveling, and fighting and stuff with a few differences.

THe community is much smaller than WoW, but its friendlier imo. More people are willing to group as well, whereas with WoW the typical wait for an instance can exceed an hour on a weeknight.

I didnt play LOTRO too long, but PvP is interesting from what I hear cuz its "monster play" or something. You can make a monster at level 50 i think and then use him against some players.

LOTRO is definately a good game. If you want something new and different than WoW, however, I recommend EVE or perhaps waiting for Conan. I'd suggest Warhammer Online, but it too will definately be in the style of WoW and LOTRO.
