#EDIT#, Ive got a new problem when uninstalling nvidia drivers, please check my post at page 2.

2.3 G Dual Core (Intel), two Geforce 8800 GTS Graphic cards SLI, 4 GB Ram, Windows Vista 64bit, and a 22 inch widescreen flat monitor.

This package sounds like a lovely gaming computer right?.. It isnt.. The only game I got which I can get decent FPS in, is Half Life 2..

Team Fortress 2, with max graphics = low framerates.. Company of Heroes with max graphics = 10 FPS.. Crysis demo with everything on medium and no AA = 9 FPS, and 1 FPS in cutscenes.. Then I just downloaded the Hellgate demo.. 10-20 FPS..

Whats wrong? I don't get it.. I've turned off windows aero, and all other vista programs that uses memory, I've updated all my drivers, etc.

Im really sad. I don't know whats wrong with my super new computer.

You're using Nvidia SLI drivers on Windows 64-bit - that's just asking for trouble. Try disabling SLI and seeing if your problem goes away.

Could you be more specific? If I'm gonna go down to my store and get the two cards replaced with a single card, I need a good reason.

You can disable SLI through the nView manager. No need to go get your cards replaced.

This can depend on a few things really.

Did you build the computer yourself? If so, double check that everything is seated correctly, main focus would be the extra power connectors on the graphics cards?I believe that you get a warning that they are running in low power mode if this is the case though.

What graphics drivers are you running? Have you updated your motherboard and sound card drivers as well? What size power supply do you have?

Is SLI enabled? When you update your graphics drivers it defaults to off. Right click on the desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel, if prompted, select advanced mode. On the left of this window, select "Set SLI configuration" and then press "Enable SLI technology". This might require a reboot.

I usually get my drivers from www.guru3d.com as they have everything you'll ever need, including beta drivers if you wish to try out untested drivers. It's generally better to only go with WHQL drivers though.

Also when updating graphics drivers, it's generally better to uninstall the last drivers first. You can actually do this in Control Panel -> Programs and Features. Look for Nvidia Drivers and select uninstall, this will prompt for a reboot. When Vista comes back on, decline Vista trying to install the new hardware and run the Nvidia driver install.

Have fun

No, he's saying that SLI and Vista 64-bit agree about as much as celebrity couples. There's no reason to abandon the 8800GTS cards just because a new revision is out. That's stupid, plain and simple.

There's nothing wrong with SLI in Vista 64-bit. Open the NVIDIA control panel and make sure that you have SLI enable to begin with. Every time you install new drivers you have to reenable this. Also go to the 3D configuration page and make sure the global acceleration performance mode is set to single display and not multi-gpu or multi-display. Don't change the SLI performance mode setting though as the drivers already have SLI profiles that are automatically used when you run a game that are shown in the list of games if you click on the tab for game-specific settings..

And make sure you're using the newest drivers. Also make sure to uninstall the display driver before installing the new ones. If you don't old registry settings and driver files could still be used.

To make sure SLI is being used in games, click on 3D advanced settings in the menu bar and turn on SLI visual indicators. If SLI is being used you'll see two white lines on the left side of the screen in a game with a green bar that should be growing and shrinking in an equal fashion. Also make sure that you have connected your two cards using the SLI bridge that was included with your motherboard. I forgot to install this when I first built my computer and didn't realize I was only running on one card. I thought the performance of one GTX was impressive, imagine my surprise after installing the bridge!

By the way, if you have a nForce motherboard, make sure you select to uninstall only the display drivers because when you select to uninstall the NVIDIA drivers it will say to uninstall everything by default.

First what resolution are you playing on?

Also try disabling SLI and see if your framerate improves. You may potentially have an issue with SLI in vista 64bit

PROBLEM- I've uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, and the computer rebooted.. I was in 1600x1050 before I did it.. Now when the computer logs into my user, it shows a black screen where it says, cant display resolution, optimum resolution: 1600x1050 or something... And I cant change it.. The black screen is just there.. what do I do?

Your monitor can't display resolutions under the native resolution? When you uninstall the drivers it should use a basic VGA driver at either 640x480 or 800x600 until you install the new drivers.

That is very strange, like Spindoc said, it sounds like your monitor can't support the resolution it has dropped to. The default for Vista is 800x600 I think. If you have another computer in the house, pilfer it's monitor and hook it up until you can install thenewer drivers. If you don't, then I'm afraid you're a little stuck. You need to get another display from somewhere so you can see until you update the drivers.

It's very unusual for a monitor to not support a low fail safe resolution, what's the manufaturer and model?

Have you tried booting into safe mode? Not sure whether the screen res is different in safe mode. If you can get in and it's visible, then you should be able to alter your screen res from here.

To get into safe mode (in case you don't already know) is press F8 before the windows loading screen appears. What I tend to do is mash F8 after post and keep doing so until the prompt appears.

Is the resolution message a monitor message or a OS message? At the black screen, can you press ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the task manager?

Maybe you need to fiddle with the monitor settings, does it have an auto detect settings option? Some monitors have this. Check the documentation for the monitor to see what resolutions it supports.

One alternative is a very usefull program called LogMeIn. If the laptop you are currently on is on the same network then you might be able to install LogMeIn on your desktop remotely with LogMeIn Scout. Both these programs are free btw.

With LogMeIn Scout, you have to install LogMeIn to the computer you are pushing from and then you should be able to deploy the LogMeIn client to your desktop. Once this is done you can remote control the computer from anywhere, so you should be able to change the resolution.

I've used this in my work, I do IT support and LogMeIn is a life saver.

www.logmein.com

Hope this helps

The SLI bridge is a short connector that connects the two graphics cards together. This links the two cards together on the top of the cards near where the cards are screwed into possition. You usually get this with the motherboard.

Glad to hear you got your screen back working again.

From SLIZone. A lot of the newer bridges are flexible now to allow for different configurations.

I guess the bridge must already be installed, as I've bought this computer from a professional shop.

I did the Nvidia control panel thing, and the SLI thing was turned off, so I turned it on, did the other stuff, and went straight into Company of Heroes.. I could see the two white lines with the green thing at the left side of the screen, but I've still got low framerates on max graphics, it's especially the AA thats killing me..

Then I tried crysis, and the lines and green beam on the left side didnt show, but it seemed it had helped. I had average framerates on high graphics with no AA on 1024xsomething. But when I turned on 1680x1050 and x8 AA, I had 0.5 frames per second.. Unplayable..

I really thank you guys for being so kind, but I'm really confused here.. And very sad, I feel like I have wasted my money. :(

AA is a pixel post-processing framerate killer, so just turn the AA down and run at a higher resolution. A higher resolution has ALMOST no impact on framebuffer performance in modern cards. Also the latest WHQL drivers don't have a SLI profile for Crysis. You need the Beta drivers for that. DX10 is also a big framerate killer on today's cards.

Okay, but do you really mean that my setup wouldnt be able to run crysis at maximum everything (as crytek would say) ? That doesent sound too good... I mean.. this hardware is top notch :( I would expect to be able to run it at very high settings with at least x8 AA with nice smooth frames..
What do you suggest I do? download which betas?
and yet again, thanks mate.

you screen resolution is really big ... so no, you won't be able to run it at the very TOP of graphics .... but you could be able to run mostly all at very high, and just high for some aspects (like shadows and volumetric stuff, i'd recommand lowering those)

i don't suggest you to lower your resolution just to have all other graphical stuff at very high

I get better performance with my 7600gst and pentium 4 system... My friend who has a single GTX had a similar problem. when he first got his pc (bought it from a shop who built it for him)m his system was running games worse than my system with a 7600gs. It turned out that the GTX required 2 power connectors and only 1 was plugged in. Take it back to the shop and ask them to look at it.

No we actually compared with benchmarks which were only trial versions so the resolution was SET. And mine came out better, once the extra connector was plugged in he got like 3 times as much as the original score:P i need a new pc

Anybody else notice that he has a dual core and not a core 2 duo?

That is your problem mate.Your processor is weak for the performance you are trying to get and a HUGE bottleneck for 8800 GTS in sli and 4GB ram.Why the hell you got that processor with a 2K rig??

Anybody else notice that he has a dual core and not a core 2 duo?

That is your problem mate.Your processor is weak for the performance you are trying to get and a HUGE bottleneck for 8800 GTS in sli and 4GB ram.Why the hell you got that processor with a 2K rig??

dual core or core 2 ... it's only names for " two cores"

SSJBen
