Hi, I'm thinking about buying a Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz with an i7 processor. I'm going to install windows on it and plan on getting a few games. I plan on getting Starcraft 2, Diablo 2, Diablo 3(when it releases), maybe Crysis(heard this can handle it) and maybe WoW or SW:KoTR. Do you think I'll be able to run these all well? Also, do you need a specific version of windows, and can macs use any bluetooth mouse/mic? I've done some research and things look positive, but I figured I'd ask some people that know a lot more about computers than me :P . Please no one tell me to get a PC... I'm not buying the computer for gaming, it's just an added bonus.

Off to the hardware forum you go. - Those games will run fine (crysis might struggle a bit) - Any Windows will do but go for Windows 7, and make sure you install it with BOOT CAMP, not as a virtual - Most Bluetooth Mics and Mice work Any reason why a Mac though? I know u said the gaming is just a bonus.

It's mainly for school and Internet surfing, and like the interface of Macs much more than PC's.

If it's just for school and Internet, then sorry to say you are paying wayyyyyyyy overprice. Not only cause you are getting a MAC, but because it's a Macbook Pro. As for the interface, with Windows 7 both of them are very much alike now....

well of course i'm doing more with it but I don't feel like going into a full explanation and write a wall of text. I came here to talk about the gaming aspect, not it's other uses... If I was, I'd be asking this somewhere else.

As I said before, I have no reason to list the reasons because they have absolutely no bearing on the topic of this discussion. This is a gaming forum, I am asking a question about gaming on macs, nothing else. Also, it comes with 330, and have seen videos of it running crysis.

'lotta folk 'round these 'ere parts that are too dense to understand why you could possibly need a Mac. Rather than mention you intend to get a Mac just ask how well the 330m can handle games. I know you shouldn't have to but that's just the way it is here.

We are not "dense". We are just asking a basic question. He said it was for school and internet only, yet he wants to run Crysis on it. The BEST course would be to get a gaming Windows Laptop... that's why we ask. We did help him out on his initial request in case you didn't read the post.

Exactly, Thank You! I'm looking for people who may have had this or know a lot about video cards and give a little bit of assistance. I've done quite a bit of research and have found positive results so far, but want to iron out some small issues I had. I don't need to hear, nor do I care about theirprejudicestowards macs.

And help can mean people trying to HELP you....

No one here is bashing MAC or saying that you should get a PC, we helped you with your inquiry and then politely asked why you are going MAC....no need to lash out and be all defensive about "theirprejudicestowards macs", WTF...?

You could have just chosen to tell us why you are purchasing a MAC, but instead you just kept posting.... "I have no reason to tell you guys anything"....whatever mate...

I support your decision to buy a macbook. It is extremely reliable and fast. It is a solid investment, and dont let others tell you otherwise.

yeah.... anyway on topic. I dont think Crysis would run all that well on your macbook. As someone else said get Win7 x64 bit. Your school may have a free copy of win7 available to you, but unsure if you need physical disk to run bootcamp. You can run SCII and those other games mentioned just fine. bluetooth and whatnot should run perfectly on mac. I would be careful since macs dont have heatfan, that gaming will run your macbook a bit hot, so take breaks often.

I think that the whole point of this topic was taken in the wrong direction early on and it was thought as a computer for gaming. If it was not for school I would not even have a laptop. I'd instead by a desktop computer. This is not the case because I am currently a student(I also get a discount because it is for school) and need to bring this computer to copy down notes, and design various types of projects. The gaming is for spare time. If the game can't play games I would still buy it for my schoolwork. I never asked if you think this computer is a good buy. It was about the games and how they would work on the computer. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it might be able to play games. I've out of PC gaming for awhile, and don't know much about recent graphics cards. I asked for assistance here and the original topic became almost totally disregarded and became more about why you think Macs are overpriced. I know what macs do(owned one for 4 years) and was looking for another. That computer could never play games because it lacked the necessary hardware. If my original request was fulfilled and we stayed on topic, there would be no hostility. I predicted this would happen and tried to ask people to stay on topic, but that did not work.

After making your remarks about it being way overpriced, the topic swirled out of control. The topic was created to discuss these game's performances. You gave an answers, but than questioned why I wanted one, even though I advised not to do that because I knew it would derail the topic.

Then good luck, if you knew so much about it and saw Crysis playing on that thing why ask ? Did you just want to double check before making the purchase ? I still think they are overpriced underperformers. And running bootcamp will kill the performance by a large margin.

Which to the vast majority of people in the world means that you need do online research and write term papers, and a netbook can do that. ;) Based on the rest of your posts, that's not the type of school you go to, and you're more likely going to run design and 3D modeling on it. That makes sense... but just like there was no reason for anyone to jump on you over buying a Mac, there's no reason to lash out in a "I knew you guys would attack me" sort of way either. Live and let live, and just ignore any trolls headed your way. :)

I'm not buying the computer for gaming, it's just an added bonus.

heatfanman101

Also get one of the Hi-Res display upgrades.

Display: The 15-inch MacBook Pro comes with a 1440-by-900-pixel LED-backlit glossy display. You can also choose a high-resolution 1680-by-1050 glossy or antiglare display.
Unlike the RAM or HDD upgrades, this can't be done easily later, and I would consider it worth the extra $100-$150 (depending on whether you go glossy or antiglare)

I'm just throwing this out there, but the Boot Camp that came with the OS X Leopard doesn't support any form of 64-bit OS other than the OS X itself, so doing any Win64 options is out of the idea unless they've updated it to where the newer 10.6 machines can do that. Also, your card should be fine for most of those games, Crysis would be the only that would suffer, but it's not worth it IMO because it's kind of a really bad, generic, and overhyped game with a ton of fanboys. That's just my opinion though, your money, not mine. As for the OS X's gaming capabilities, I run with Boot Camp and I have absolutely no problems at all, the most recent game that I can run is BFBC2 on low settings, but hey, it runs! I am getting a new gaming rig this year and putting my MBP straight to school. I'll tell you why the OS X is better for school though, the programs actually work. They're faster, they always start up properly, and I have never had an application crash on me unless I was trying to make it crash...save for Handbrake, that one is a bit fussy.

I'm just throwing this out there, but the Boot Camp that came with the OS X Leopard doesn't support any form of 64-bit OS other than the OS X itself, so doing any Win64 options is out of the idea unless they've updated it to where the newer 10.6 machines can do that.theafiguy

He will still be able to run most modern games in a 32-bit Windows just fine, most of them still are optimized for 32-bit anyway.

And I actually agree with you on Crysis. As eyecandy it is gorgeous if your computer can handle it, but as an actual game, I didn't find it special at all. :P

Im fairly sure Snow Leopard bootcamp can be 64-bit (might be wrong). Snow Leopard is standard with new Macs.

Google says it can. Ignore my earlier 32-bit comment. :)

- I'm sure Snow Leopard can run 64bit, I would have to double check - Whoever said Boot Camp destroys performance doesn't know what they are talking about - Crysis is a great game, not just eye candy.

Games should run just fine. My laptop has a similar GPU (GT 335m). It might have some trouble if you get the 1680x1050 screen though.

There's literally no reason to waste your money on a mac, but you do what you want...

Just cause you buy a MAC it doesn't mean it's a waste of money you know....

I'm not buying the computer for gaming, it's just an added bonus.

u should be able to run those games fine...i play SC2 on my 13" mbp (320m) on medium settings and since that mbp has the 330m, it should perform better. haven't tried crisis yet dunno bout that and btw TC, there's a lot of MAC haters in this forum...instead of answering ur question, they would question u why get a MAC and tell u to get a pc instead...dunno why but this is not really a good place to ask about MAC...u might want to try a mac forum website cuz u'll get better responses
