Would anyone suggest out there that would make oblivion run smoother for my computer?

Currently my specs are

AMD 64 4000+ 2.4GHz

1.2 gigs of ram

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 mb

I want it to run smooth and on around medium-high settings

in terms of upgrades, the graphics card is numero uno - get a 7800gt (they gotta be cheap now) and you can pretty much max it out besides having to choose between hdr or aa

but the easiest way to improve performance would just be to drop the settings, twiddle with the ini to get grass density down (there will be numerous guides for this online - helps a lot) and disable or reduce shadows and drop hdr for bloom and knock that draw distance down

thing is, though, oblivion is a game of beauty - a world to explore and be amazed by... if you aren't playing it in all its beauty - arguments about how much "gameplay matters" aside - you aren't playing oblivion

an upgrade would be much better than any alternative

The best way to make it run smooth is to upgrade your GFX card. Probobly for you a Radeon x1950 XT because you could max out graphics and you could also have AA and HDR on at the same time. The second thing to upgrade would be the ram to 2 gigs but that willn't make great difference right now.

Turn shadows off and water quality low.  These, along with HDR, can turn an otherwise excellent-running game into a slideshow.

Well 1gb to 2gb wont give you a fps increase but will help with studdering/loading. Now if you want to upgrade the geforce 7600's will play the game on high settings. If you dont want to upgrade nothing turn off shadows, lower grass distance to 25% or off, view distance to 75% will help to also you could try turning the textures to medium. Defragging your pc can help too as well as turning off apps in the background that your not using.

id recommend at least 2 gigs of ram.Ive got 1 gig of ddr2 667,every couple of seconds there is a bit of a noticeable flicker while accessing paged memory.I even turned page file off once,in the game i closed an oblivion gate, right as i grabbed the sigil stone when everything was burning the game shut down and there was a windows error message saying not enough memory.I only had essential processes running at the time using under 190MB.Using a 7900gs i run HDR distant lands on shadows on draw distance 75%.In my case, there would be better performance with more RAM.

Another gig of ram wont increase fps thats what he wants. gamespot did test on low end/high end ram with 1 and 2 gb of ram the fps was a 1-2 fps increase with 2gb thats it  but having the 2 gb helps with studdering/loading pauses vs 1 gb. so Just lower grass and shadows. Also Oblivion is a poorly coded game.
