Red Dead Redemption is an incredible game. It features a fantastically-realized gameworld and saw Rockstar experiment even further with emergent gameplay. The characters are great, the story is engaging and well-written and it has one of the best video game endings of all time.
Mass Effect 2, while definitely an improvement over the original, still had serious issues. Lack of exploration was the main one. Most of the game focuses on action through extremely linear environments. There are only 4 worlds to explore - two of which are tiny (Omega, Tuchanka) and two are moderately sized (Illium, Citadel).
Unfortunately, Mass Effect 2 also brings brand new issues. There are only a few weapons in each cIass and a handful of armor/clothing upgrades. The loot is simply pitiful. Abilities have been stripped to a point where leveling up has become completely and utterly meaningless.
While learning the truth about the Collectors was interesting, there was definitely a noticeable lack of a proper villain - especially considering that the original had two. The first encounter with Sovereign is an extremely memorable moment.
Also, while the overall design has been improved, the mission design still mostly boils down to killing everything in your path through a maze of curiously placed cargo containers. There's a mission that involves helping Tali out by representing her in court which I was really excited about as it brought back fond memories of the Manaan trial and Dantooine murder mystery from Knights of the Old Republic. However, the trial lasts for about 2 minutes before being interrupted in order to redeem Tali by killing a whole bunch of geth. So disappointing. The only missions that differ are Samara's and Thane's loyalty missions.
All that said, I greatly enjoyed Mass Effect 2, couldn't stop playing it, in fact. In the end, Mass Effect 2 is a great game that mostly improves upon its predecessor, but once again falls short of its potential.
