For PC which should i get? they're both $20 and i've only got $20 so...

I played both on the 360 and I hated oblivion and loved Mass Effect.
But on the computer I've heard you can mod oblivion to become a much better game than it was before...so I guess it depends on what you want from the game.
If you want some 1st person hack-n-slash type game, go with Oblivion. There are so many mods out there to improve upon the lackluster of a game that the vanilla version is, it should be a game that can keep you buys for hours on end. Mass Effect is better in the story department and I enjoyed the game play it offered more then what Oblivion had. If I had to pick for you, I'd say Mass Effect...but that's just my opinion. For PC which should i get? they're both $20 and i've only got $20 so...

Mass Effect
Pros: Great presentation and storytelling, engaging combat, fun main quest, replayable.
Cons: Short, dull sidequests, clunky driving sequences.
Oblivion
Pros: Large world, plenty of mod support, decent sidequests.
Cons: Bad main quest, bad storyline, quite boring, no role-playing.
I'd highly recommend ME over Oblivion, but I suppose it all depends on whether or not you like swords or lasers, or sandbox games or games with storylines.

^ this guy right here is spot on
i disagree-
Oblivion
-good side quests, good world to explore, lots of customizability, great mods
-Bad main quest with **** story
Mass Effect
-good main quest, good storyline
-dull worlds, bad sidequests, not as much detail givin to non-main quest related areas.
Oblivion has more replay value, but mass effect is good for one run.
I preferred oblivion beacause there is so much to do and of how open world it was, like you could burgle people's houses or kill anyone. lol :P
I would say mow a lawn for another $20 and get both.:P
I have both, and I like both.
The naysayers on Oblivion forget about player-made mods. Install the Unofficial Patches after Official Patch 1.2.0416 and you've got an almost bug-free game.
If you're willing to invest a little time in modding Oblivion, you'll find it to be the best open-world medieval RPG there ever was. My game has 70 mods installed. But you do have to learn some extra utilities to Load-Order the mods to reduce conflicts.
Absolutely nothing wrong with Mass Effect either. New DLC is coming soon for it. Bioware is being super-slow about the second patch, however. It is the best RPG with firearms. Plus your saved games can be used on Mass Effect 2.
Its hard to compare I think as one is a shooter while one is hack and slash you could say. They both have pros and cons but I think oblivion is a lot better, there is so much more to do and a great replay value.
I don't think there is any comparison. Oblivion is one of the greatest video games ever made. Whereas, Mass Effect is just a above average space RPG.
If you are going for mods (they are easy to install, the game is MADE with mods in mind), then Oblivion.
If you are Not going for Mods, then ME.
In truth I am not really sure how I feel about any of those games... I reallydid not like them (Oblivion was capable of impressing me).
Honestly Mass effect WITH every single side mission I sould find took me about 28 hours, it was fairly dull, the cahracters were decent, but the story, the world, basicly anything in ME, feel like it was either taken from Starwars or Star trek (year the game is sort of a blend of the two). The artstyle is appaling (think white and clean).
Worst of all in ME... there is 4 weapons (yep only 4 freakin guns, there are like 30 reskinned models of them, but its still the same weapons, with alterations in stats) and a handful of "magic" about 6 or 7 for each of the two classes, so about 10 hours in youve pretty much seen it all...
Oblivion is not that much better... unmodded it is not even a true RPG, the world is uninspired, and cluttered, it feels random, but itIS a playground, some of the guilds has asome funny quests, and the world looksnice (relaxing). But spending about 150 -200 hours in Oblivion is not unnatural.
Both games recycleart (Obliviong has lomething like 4 interiors that are recycled so much that you really dont care pretty fast). Mass effects sidemissions lookVERYsimilar (there are a few good ones).
For 20 bucks tho they are both worth it... but dont expect any of them to rock your world forever... unless youre the type of guy who runs around with a plastic lightsaber, and still tryies to defend the 3 new star wars movies :3
Mass Effect easily.
Oblivion is a dull world full of characters who have some burning to desire to stare deep into your eyes and pierce your soul, boring main quest, leveled monsters and loot, boring combat that is all hack and slash, (or non-stop spell casting) and virtually no role playing involved.
However, mods can fix most of these problems and the game can actually be worthwhile to play, also the side quests are also fun and interesting.
Mass Effect on the other hand is a much better game, great character interaction with the greatest voice acting ever to be compiled in a game, very fun and tactical combat, one of the greatest story's of the past 3 years, and an interesting setting with a whole encyclopedia that ranges from the other species of alien in the game all the way to military jargon. A truly great game.
Except for the dull uncharted planets, they look like someone just put the same barren rocky wasteland and slapped a tundra or desert skin on top, most of the side quests that deal with these planets are not as good as the quests that deal with the story or the side quests of the planets that the main quest is told throughout.
I will admit however, when Oblivion came out I loved it, but after playing more sophisticated RPG's, it does not even deserve the title of The Elder Scrolls. Mass Effect is a game where you are Commander Shepard, and you can do whatever you want, you choose what you do, you don't just say the one line of dialogue the game puts in front of you, you always have options.
To me, its no question.

i personally loved the driving sequences, why did ppl have anything against it? i enjoyed rocket jumping over lasers/missiles shot at me and the overal gunplay. it wasa really simple but enjoyable. i actually really loved the vehicle combat lol
I've got both as well, so if you're a bang for your buck kind of guy, I have to give it to Oblivion. But the thing is, while there's a lot more to do and see, I tire of open ended games very easily. I paid 70 Canadian for Mass Effect (60 American for Oblivion, on that note) and I feel I got my money's worth for ME. As a fan of KoTOR, I like the strong story that ties everything together nicely, and the extra bonus side missions for revealing some story, but above all else.. XP. ME side quests, although dull, do the job, and it's extra practice once you feel your character is bad ass enough. Mowing down guys with my upgraded assault rifle never gets old. Mass Effect is varied enough to be exciting, but replay value isn't all there.
Then again, I'm more a sci-fi guy as well, so you can see where my preferences really lie.
20 bucks for a shorter, but amazing (...trying to think of a stronger word here) experience, or 20 bucks for pretty great experience that is dragged on a little longer.
It depends on why you enjoy playing RPGs. For me, I like to be totally emmersed in the world; Mass Effect did it for me. Oblivion, on the other hand .. I really wanted to like the game, but retarded A.I and ridiculous voice acting along with many other issues keep you away from being fully emmeresed. It also got rediculously boring and repetitive.
So .. Mass Effect!
Gameplay:
Oblivion>ME
Graphics:
ME>Oblivion
Soud:
ME>Oblivion
Story:
ME>Oblivion
Fun Factor:
Oblivion WITH me MODS>ME
No mods then both would get boring after a while
Replayability:
Same as above
Both are mediocre games, but oblivion can be a little better than mediocre with mods.So i say oblivion...although you should really just buy a better game.
I would say Mass Effect . When i played Oblivion i was amazed , but in 20-30h i was bored (killing monsters to go to next same looking dungeon to kill more monsters and 5 voice actors for many many NCP).
ME isnt that long game , but does everything perfect (i liked side quests , for me they where entertaining) . and when someone say that ME planet environment is the dull , you can think they didnt play oblivion.... same environment in dungeons and same environment in aleyd ruins.
In other words if you prefer shorter but with very interesting story and more finished game - play ME (well ME have some annoying bugs )
They are both good games but I personally enjoyed mass effect better. Even though mass effect doesn't feel as polished as Oblivion the story is awesome. The sound effects keep cutting out, there are lots of glitches etc in mass effect even with the latest patch and drivers. But if you can ignore that mass effect is a better RPG. Bring on mass effect 2.
