Was reading that Mass Effect for the pc had drm copy protection that gave people problems. Is this true?
Would it be better to buy it digitally? Never used Steam before- is it good? does it install spyware or anything on your computer?

I'd avoid D2D due to my personal experience with this very game from them. I downloaded it and tried installing it just a few days ago, but since the zipped folder was fudged, the installer cancelled itself, and now I have to re-download the thing because it won't let me install anymore :?
Steam is perfect imo, never had any problems what so ever. Never run out of activations or anything (at least I havnt).
D2D isnt bad either, only issue I had with them was having to email them for a new neverwinter nights2 activation code (only took 2 days to get a new one though).
Get it on Steam, and if your worried about DRM don't, With many experiences with multiple DRM's I've never had much problems with them other than the DRM's with install Limits...:|
But the good news the Steam version is DRM Free other than Steam it's self but that's nothing to worry about, Plus it's cheap. :D
