I got mass effect 2 earlier today but have not played the first one. Will this make the second game worthless or something? Or bad?

The first one is pretty average, but like others said it's cheap right now so if you want to get caught up on the story and all. The second one is much better, they dispensed with much of the RPG elements and focused on making a great TPS. It is much better for it.

Hmm. I'm just really having trouble pulling the trigger on that one for some reason. Idk why. I just hear so many good things about 2 and everyone ive talked to says the first one is just ehh
Part of what made the first ME so memorable was exploring uncharted worlds and having a thresher maw jump up in your face. Also stuff like hearing the rachni song on earth's moon, really creepy. I missed stuff like that in ME2, everything was too - linear. Regardless, both games were awesome and I had a blast playing them.
Agreed. And Omni-gel. Reviews complained about it... but I loved turning my unwanted gear into omni-gel and attaching upgrades to my equipment and gear.Part of what made the first ME so memorable was exploring uncharted worlds and having a thresher maw jump up in your face. Yeah totally...omni-gel the magic gel that can fix anything :)
And all those upgrades, heat absorption, longer barrel etc. were nice incentives to customize your party's loadout. The inventory and loot system, although a little crude, was something I thought ME2 should have had.
Good Idea you will not regret it.Oh lord you guys convinced me lol. Alright then both it is

Lol reminds me of that line from the LoTSB dlc.
"Hey Liara remember the good old days when you could just slap omni gel on anything to open it up?"
ralph2190
ahaha yeah..classic.
LOL yup. Man, I want to play ME1 again...too much backlog! Blargh! The first Mass Effect is selling on Steam for 9.99 and I highly recommend you get it. It's really rewarding to see your actions in ME1 affect some of the plot in ME2.

Ralph is stating truth here, and I wholeheartedly agree.
Gamespot published a news article about ME2's save importer - it literally checks for hundreds of decisions from a ME1 save, so it's definitely worth your while to get the first game.
In addition, ME1 has a great storyline and voiceovers.
Neither of those RPGs are particularly great, but one of the series' defining traits is the fact that decisions made in the preceding games carry over and impact the second game. They dropped the ball rather badly with most of them, often relegating your choices to relatively insignificant side details in Mass Effect 2. But it strikes me that if you're going to play the series at all, you should probably play it in a way that exploits its advantages.
It addition to not having a character to import (in which case ME2 defaults to the worst choices you could have made in the first game), you'll have absolutely no idea what's going on in the story.

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are two of the greatest games of all time, easily up there with Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and Freespace 2, and anyone who says otherwise just doesn't know good games.

Indeed. We all know that people who have a different outlook on games than yourself simply have no taste.
The fact is, Mass Effect isn't a very extensive RPG, and considering its genre that is a perfectly good reason for me to consider it lesser than "great". There are plenty of superior games in the same genre out there.
Yes, it doesn't offer as many features as the pinnacles of WRPGs, but what it does it does better than any other game out there. Indeed they are both very poor RPGs but at least the ME2 is a great action game. I'm hoping by ME3 they dispense with most of the RPG elements all together and just make it all third person shooter action game with some story. Now they are adding MP, so that could take off as well.Neither of those RPGs are particularly great, but one of the series' defining traits is the fact that decisions made in the preceding games carry over and impact the second game. Omg don't ever compare godly things to a not godly one! :xYou don't start watching Lord of the Rings at Two Towers, or Star Wars at Empire Strikes Back

You're right. Two Towers did suck, while Empire Strikes Back and Mass Effect 2 were epic

But what exactly is so bad about experiencing the fantasy genre at its roots? It hardly tells you anything about the game.
I mean hell, yeah I get it goddamn it, it's the same thing: dwarves, elves, humans, and orc... things. But heck, Tolkien did good with only 4 races, and no one seems to complain about that. What, would the story be better if we had walking reptiles? Maybe we should tell Tolkien that his stories are outdated and generic in the modern age now. Maybe if he would add walking reptiles and black elves it would work again. Heck, why does anyone still care about Tolkien's work anymore.
YOUR game is generic, MINE is old-school.
eh, i'd actually recommend skipping ME1. both games are a timesink, so save yourself the 30 hours and enjoy ME2's superior gameplay from the get-go. just read up on ME1's plotline, if you are so inclined.

ME 1 is a great game, its a timesink only if you are a completionist that have to finish everything, you could just play the main plot of me 1 and get an awesome game, they just made the mistake of adding this repetitive "side quests" which are all the same but you can just ignore them, thankfully they fixed that in me 2
