I got mass effect 2 earlier today but have not played the first one. Will this make the second game worthless or something? Or bad?

The first Mass Effect is selling on Steam for 9.99 and I highly recommend you get it. It's really rewarding to see your actions in ME1 affect some of the plot in ME2.

I would strongly recommend not skipping out on Mass Effect. Not only because it's one amazing game, but the sequel allows you to import the character you used(along with all the decisions you made) from the first.

The first one is pretty average, but like others said it's cheap right now so if you want to get caught up on the story and all. The second one is much better, they dispensed with much of the RPG elements and focused on making a great TPS. It is much better for it.

Hmm. I'm just really having trouble pulling the trigger on that one for some reason. Idk why. I just hear so many good things about 2 and everyone ive talked to says the first one is just ehh

The first one is a great experience. It can get a little cumbersome doing all the side quests because they get fairly repetitive, but the main story is totally worth it. I would recommend playing through and not wasting time with side quests you feel no general interest in and then just jump straight into Mass Effect 2 when you're done. It'll be worth it.

Part of what made the first ME so memorable was exploring uncharted worlds and having a thresher maw jump up in your face. Also stuff like hearing the rachni song on earth's moon, really creepy. I missed stuff like that in ME2, everything was too - linear. Regardless, both games were awesome and I had a blast playing them.

I strongly, STRONGLY recommend playing Mass Effect 1 first. I could not imagine playing ME2 without playing the original. There's no reason why you wouldn't want to play ME1. It's one of my favorite games of all time. ME1's story is better than ME2, imho. But ME2's gameplay and controls plays out a lot better.

The whole mass effect series with 3 coming next year is really like one big game split in to three parts and to not play the first before the second is like missing a piece of the story. So go and get the first and play it.

Yeah totally...omni-gel the magic gel that can fix anything :)

And all those upgrades, heat absorption, longer barrel etc. were nice incentives to customize your party's loadout. The inventory and loot system, although a little crude, was something I thought ME2 should have had.

The first one isn't fantastic, but it sets up the story for the trilogy and is worth playing for that alone. The second one is better, but you'll enjoy it more if you've played through the first one. So...since the first one is cheap now, I'd go for it.

Ralph is stating truth here, and I wholeheartedly agree.

Gamespot published a news article about ME2's save importer - it literally checks for hundreds of decisions from a ME1 save, so it's definitely worth your while to get the first game.

In addition, ME1 has a great storyline and voiceovers.

Neither of those RPGs are particularly great, but one of the series' defining traits is the fact that decisions made in the preceding games carry over and impact the second game. They dropped the ball rather badly with most of them, often relegating your choices to relatively insignificant side details in Mass Effect 2. But it strikes me that if you're going to play the series at all, you should probably play it in a way that exploits its advantages.

It addition to not having a character to import (in which case ME2 defaults to the worst choices you could have made in the first game), you'll have absolutely no idea what's going on in the story.

Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are two of the greatest games of all time, easily up there with Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and Freespace 2, and anyone who says otherwise just doesn't know good games.

Indeed. We all know that people who have a different outlook on games than yourself simply have no taste.

The fact is, Mass Effect isn't a very extensive RPG, and considering its genre that is a perfectly good reason for me to consider it lesser than "great". There are plenty of superior games in the same genre out there.

Yes, it doesn't offer as many features as the pinnacles of WRPGs, but what it does it does better than any other game out there. Mass Effect is the best story driven action RPG series.

The first game give you a lot of background on Commander Sheppard, the various races in game, the state of the galaxy and sets up the bad guys for the second game. So to me NO DO NOT PLAY ME2 WITHOUT PLAYING ME1 FIRST!!

It would be my hope that the third incorporates the better parts of both games. Each game had it's own advantages and thus disadvantages. I liked the inventory and upgrades system in ME1 as an example. Just sayin'.

Indeed they are both very poor RPGs but at least the ME2 is a great action game. I'm hoping by ME3 they dispense with most of the RPG elements all together and just make it all third person shooter action game with some story. Now they are adding MP, so that could take off as well.

you won't be missing out on much. The story isnt that epic but you'll miss out on the importing of the characters decisions but theres a site to go on that have pre set characters and you might find what you like maybe someone on here is nice enough to give you the link.

W-what? And I hate how everyone uses the word 'generic'. I get it, you're trying to be derogatory. But what exactly is so bad about experiencing the fantasy genre at its roots? It hardly tells you anything about the game.

I mean hell, yeah I get it goddamn it, it's the same thing: dwarves, elves, humans, and orc... things. But heck, Tolkien did good with only 4 races, and no one seems to complain about that. What, would the story be better if we had walking reptiles? Maybe we should tell Tolkien that his stories are outdated and generic in the modern age now. Maybe if he would add walking reptiles and black elves it would work again. Heck, why does anyone still care about Tolkien's work anymore.

YOUR game is generic, MINE is old-school.

ME 1 is a great game, its a timesink only if you are a completionist that have to finish everything, you could just play the main plot of me 1 and get an awesome game, they just made the mistake of adding this repetitive "side quests" which are all the same but you can just ignore them, thankfully they fixed that in me 2
