http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/half-life-2 You see it here, no FPS can challenge half-life 2, and hundreds of reviewers agree. This means that no FPS has come close to the high standards set by this game. Do you agree with this?

Well, it has bad gunplay and AI, bad vehicle sections, bad enemies like the manhacks, bad levels like the mines, bad platforming... And worst of all, those "get stuck in a room while Exposition-bot delivers exposition" parts.

Pretty good game otherwise!

It's decent, but not among the games I enjoy, never managed to finish a single one of them.

Good, it deserves it. In my opinion it is not only the greatest FPS of all time, but the greatestgame of all time as well. The story is very deep and the gameplay feels wonderful. The characters are unforgettable and original just like the voice acting. I don't understand why people don't like the driving sequences - they felt great IMO.

It deserves every positive review.

I do agree, HL2 and Portal 2 are the two best single player fps games I've had the pleasure to play both were pretty close to being perfect imho.

I read reviews with a grain of salt, and usually I'm left to disagree completely, or be absolutely disgusted by the lack of honesty and experience of the reviewer.

For me, Half-Life 2 was one of the bigger let downs in FPS gaming history since Halo was introduced. After the success of Half-Life (mostly the success of the highly-edited Quake engine) and the mega success of Counter-Strike, Valve fanboys started getting rather delusional. Many still to this day claim that HL2 is the best game (not just FPS) ever created. CS:Source, CS:GO. Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal followed. More mediocre games I can't honestly score any higher than a 9.0, well, other than TF2 which is probably in the Top 5 best video games ever created.

As Daniel Dust has just said, I too couldn't manage to finish Half-Life 2 in all the years that I've owned it. It's simply a boring game that is very buggy and leaves some old school gamers wondering what happened to Valve? I mean, they used to make amazing games, then their games just went completely mediocre and bland. Source engine, while technologically advanced, is actually a really sloppy engine for playing competitive FPS games with.

Its an amazing game and I for one enjoyed the boat/driving sequences and can't think of another fps that has better first person perspective driving. But it doesn't make it the end all be all for fps games. There a alot of other fps that a great in there own right no one way can truly be called the best there simply taking a diffrent approach to the fps genre and I really like thats its that way. All the variety in gameplay, story, etc is what keeps the genres interesting It would be very boring if all fps where clones of each other.

HL2 is an incredible game, I'm waiting for Valve to properly announce HL3 before I go back and replay the entire series as I have before. I think I've beaten it 3 or 4 times now. Even the episodes were superbly done. In terms of shooters, I think Crysis certainly is up there for gameplay. Deus Ex isn't much of a pure shooter but techinically it's classed as an FPS / RPG hybrid so therefore it's also up there competing. So I don't think no other game has come close, but very few have.

The one thing that Valve does right, is doing it differently than before, and better than the other guys. So you have to give them that. Whether you like their games or not, they all deserve a minimum of 9.0 in my opinion. And when I say their games went 'mediocre' i mean that in the sense of what their predecessors were. Compared to every other game in the market, Valve games are far better.

I agree that relative to it's competitiion at the time of release, Half-life 2 was the best FPS released since the original Half-life. I think it's been surpassed in some ways, but not as an overall game.

there's the unwieldy vehicle sections that drag on for that little bit too long and the "dear god make it stop" hold-off-the-combine-with-turrets parts of nova prospekt.

other than that it's pretty damn flawless

Well you aren't accounting for changing times and standards, where today a game like Killzone or FEAR gives you genius AI that flanks you and guns with fantastic recoil and all, as well as Bioshock's own 96 score.

Though personally I'd say I preferred the first Half-Life. It was a little more open, a little more awe inspiring, and Half-life 2 wouldn't have been nearly as hyped if Half-Life wasn't a god game among mortal games.

Anyways, this thread seems kind of pointless, I'd call it troll bait almost unless you are serious and think it is objectively the best FPS of all time, actually flawless and surpassing modern standards. I mean that would be dumb, no game is flawless, if I picked out my favorite game of all time or the most flawless game I could think I've, I'd still have at least 15 problems or nitpicks or issues with it.

It was very solid, very high rated indeed and liked by many. The best? Not really. Not that memorable, gun fights are meh, vehicle section is pretty OK. Having played the first one, the nostalgia didn't get to me at all. I didn't find the story that compelling either - it's not something that moves your or make you ponder for days like silent hill or to the moon. Maybe I just won't get it, doesn't matter the slightest still.

Agreed, completely. There are certainly games since HL2 that have done certain things a bit better, but with a lot of help from advanced tech. Taking the time into consideration, HL2 is absolutely astounding in every way. And yeah, I don't get the hate for the vehicle segments. They're some of the very few driving segments in FPSs that I didn't find awkward, with weird handling.

I love the first HL, but it was waaaaaaaaay too long for my taste. Near the end I just wanted to fight final boss and uninstall. HL2 had a perfect balance of length and pacing.

I found its gameplay underwhelming even at launch. While the story, characters, and setting were more developed than your average first person shooter the gameplay was rather average for its era. You have to remember that Far Cry came out earlier that same year and offered far more compelling dynamics in regards to how the player could interact with the AI and use the environment to their advantage. A few months after Half Life 2 we'd see fps titles like FEAR and Brothers in Arms which once again, not the greatest in terms of setting and writing but the gameplay was largely superior. Not that I don't love Half Life 2, I mean its a classic, but not for its gameplay.

I think it was a year later that I bothered to (staying away from new games at least a year or so to let it polish, pathed. modded, whatever ). Still not that great. It was then another year that I tried Portal 1, and it blew me away. Before then I played The Longest Journey in 2010 which was great and fun for an old game.

I agree with it being the highest rated FPS of all time. Everything about it was perfect; the graphics, sound, and gameplay. It excels at being a cinematic FPS without taking control away from the user. This is something that most FPS games struggle with today. Similar to how Half-Life heavily influenced a new generation of FPS games back in 1999, Half-Life 2 ushered PC shooters into the next generation in 2004. As if it wasn't enough having a stellar single-player campaign, Half-Life 2 also came with CS:S, a continuation of one of the best multiplayer shooters of all time. The other noteworthy game at the time was Doom 3. Doom 3 was also a very good game, but didn't have nearly as much of an impact on the industry as HL2 did. Even Doom 3's expansion saw fit to copy Half-Life 2!

No. At best, the cumulative scores can only be compared to the other cumulative scores of games in that same time period. It's a great game and I loved the Orange Box, but it isn't my very favorite. Honestly, the first time I played it I didn't care for it all that much because of the excessive load screens. Of course, it was graphically impressive. I think I enjoyed Red Faction or Call of Duty more, though it's hard to say exactly considering these are all old games. I definitely liked Stalker COP more though.

No game is entirely flawless.

I thought the game had too few stand out set pieces and too many mundane environments. Once you get past Ravenholm, the game turns pretty bland.

I had about as much fun with Half-Life 2 as I did with Rogue Warrior.

In other words, absolutely dreadful. I thought I had wasted 30 bucks back in 2005 for a piece of sh!t game, but then I remembered that it came with this other game called "Counter-Strike Source." No idea what it was, no idea what it would look like. No idea that it would be so damn great.

jakes456

it's not fair to compare a games with 3 years more advanced technology(6 years if we plus hardware requirement on crysis) in term of entertainment value, packed content, gunplay mechnic, everything crysis does own HL2 easily, but such comparison is not fair, and HL1 & 2 were pretty revaluational and had very influential in the whole FPS genre when they came out

also as stated in my earlier post, HL2 is nowhere close being the highest rated FPS on metacritic, they are handful FPS had it beaten, all of which are little bit more classic than HL1 & 2. ---->

Oh no, I love them. HL2 is just incredibly dull and boring. Bad gunplay with bad AI with boring progression, crappy levels, and boring graphics. I honestly don't understand how people can possibly like it.

For me there hasn't been a Single Player FPS that has come out since that has been any good. No one is doing what Half-Life is doing, they all decided to go the COD direction and I hate that. I love the one continuous level of the HL series and I love the physics play, the platforming, the driving and all the puzzles. HL2 as well is the only FPS that has drawn me in with the story and it's because it is told to you in game and not in cutscenes.

Just while we are talking HL and top games. IGN did a list on the 6th "Top 25 modern PC games" (Not linking, hate to give IGNorant hits). Because it was modern (somewhere between 2006-now by their reckoning) they only had Hl2:Episode 2 on the list but it was second. Guess what was first? Bioshock. I was like "WTF???" Especially after TF2 was only 8th and GTAVI (Terrible port, even thought it was a good game) at number 15, a higher spot then L4D2, Minecraft and Deus Ex HR. Anything HL should be No.1 Instantly! Anyway, while Metacritic is a terrible site for this stuff, I love the Half Life series and it is definitely in the top 5 games ever list in my opinion

Half-Life 1 had better AI when you do a side-by-side comparison. HL2 was a huge disappointment. It's a pretty good game, but way overrated
