Good, it deserves it. In my opinion it is not only the greatest FPS of all time, but the greatestgame of all time as well. The story is very deep and the gameplay feels wonderful. The characters are unforgettable and original just like the voice acting. I don't understand why people don't like the driving sequences - they felt great IMO.
It deserves every positive review.
I read reviews with a grain of salt, and usually I'm left to disagree completely, or be absolutely disgusted by the lack of honesty and experience of the reviewer.
For me, Half-Life 2 was one of the bigger let downs in FPS gaming history since Halo was introduced. After the success of Half-Life (mostly the success of the highly-edited Quake engine) and the mega success of Counter-Strike, Valve fanboys started getting rather delusional. Many still to this day claim that HL2 is the best game (not just FPS) ever created. CS:Source, CS:GO. Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal followed. More mediocre games I can't honestly score any higher than a 9.0, well, other than TF2 which is probably in the Top 5 best video games ever created.
As Daniel Dust has just said, I too couldn't manage to finish Half-Life 2 in all the years that I've owned it. It's simply a boring game that is very buggy and leaves some old school gamers wondering what happened to Valve? I mean, they used to make amazing games, then their games just went completely mediocre and bland. Source engine, while technologically advanced, is actually a really sloppy engine for playing competitive FPS games with.
Its an amazing game and I for one enjoyed the boat/driving sequences and can't think of another fps that has better first person perspective driving. But it doesn't make it the end all be all for fps games. There a alot of other fps that a great in there own right no one way can truly be called the best there simply taking a diffrent approach to the fps genre and I really like thats its that way. All the variety in gameplay, story, etc is what keeps the genres interesting It would be very boring if all fps where clones of each other.
I agree that relative to it's competitiion at the time of release, Half-life 2 was the best FPS released since the original Half-life. I think it's been surpassed in some ways, but not as an overall game.
Forgettable?Half Life 2 is good but forgetable. Placing it or calling it the best FPS is garbage.

Well you aren't accounting for changing times and standards, where today a game like Killzone or FEAR gives you genius AI that flanks you and guns with fantastic recoil and all, as well as Bioshock's own 96 score.
Though personally I'd say I preferred the first Half-Life. It was a little more open, a little more awe inspiring, and Half-life 2 wouldn't have been nearly as hyped if Half-Life wasn't a god game among mortal games.
Anyways, this thread seems kind of pointless, I'd call it troll bait almost unless you are serious and think it is objectively the best FPS of all time, actually flawless and surpassing modern standards. I mean that would be dumb, no game is flawless, if I picked out my favorite game of all time or the most flawless game I could think I've, I'd still have at least 15 problems or nitpicks or issues with it.

Agreed, completely. There are certainly games since HL2 that have done certain things a bit better, but with a lot of help from advanced tech. Taking the time into consideration, HL2 is absolutely astounding in every way. And yeah, I don't get the hate for the vehicle segments. They're some of the very few driving segments in FPSs that I didn't find awkward, with weird handling.
LOL METACRITIC?
Out of the Park Baseball 2007 is the second best game of all time according to them.
The first Half-Life is better by the way.
I love the first HL, but it was waaaaaaaaay too long for my taste. Near the end I just wanted to fight final boss and uninstall. HL2 had a perfect balance of length and pacing.LOL METACRITIC?

People that are saying HL2 was "meh" or "forgettable" or "not that great". May I ask, did you guys play it at launch or years later? All good that you didn't like it, just that it's quite different having played it at launch or years down the track.FelipeInside

Still not that great. It was then another year that I tried Portal 1, and it blew me away. Before then I played The Longest Journey in 2010 which was great and fun for an old game.

Do you know what words mean?
Also, according to Metacritic, Out of the Park Baseball 2007 is the best game of 2006. Point?

2006 was a pretty weak year if I remember correctly.

handful fps already beat HL2 at total rating on metacritic
but HL1 and 2 are easily amount the top 10 most revolutional fps in the history of FPS
No game is entirely flawless.
I thought the game had too few stand out set pieces and too many mundane environments. Once you get past Ravenholm, the game turns pretty bland.
Quake is the best FPS of all time in my opinion and Half-Life 1 being a close second. Half-Life 2 I'd put in my top 10 but I don't know about my top 5.
I had about as much fun with Half-Life 2 as I did with Rogue Warrior.
In other words, absolutely dreadful. I thought I had wasted 30 bucks back in 2005 for a piece of sh!t game, but then I remembered that it came with this other game called "Counter-Strike Source." No idea what it was, no idea what it would look like. No idea that it would be so damn great.
Me think you not like SP FPS Games with Story ???I had about as much fun with Half-Life 2 as I did with Rogue Warrior.

Crysis owns HL2. Overrated game.

it's not fair to compare a games with 3 years more advanced technology(6 years if we plus hardware requirement on crysis) in term of entertainment value, packed content, gunplay mechnic, everything crysis does own HL2 easily, but such comparison is not fair, and HL1 & 2 were pretty revaluational and had very influential in the whole FPS genre when they came out
also as stated in my earlier post, HL2 is nowhere close being the highest rated FPS on metacritic, they are handful FPS had it beaten, all of which are little bit more classic than HL1 & 2. ---->

HL1 had a much bigger impact than HL2. HL1 is a solid 9.5/10. HL2 is like a 6.6/10.

Oh no, I love them. HL2 is just incredibly dull and boring. Bad gunplay with bad AI with boring progression, crappy levels, and boring graphics. I honestly don't understand how people can possibly like it.
For me there hasn't been a Single Player FPS that has come out since that has been any good. No one is doing what Half-Life is doing, they all decided to go the COD direction and I hate that. I love the one continuous level of the HL series and I love the physics play, the platforming, the driving and all the puzzles. HL2 as well is the only FPS that has drawn me in with the story and it's because it is told to you in game and not in cutscenes.
