This is typical MS tactics for you, and the prime reason I wish them to get fried in the console wars! It's not healthy for one company to take over markets like they do, and proceed to govern them by spanking consumers with the dollar-bat. So what should we do? Buy Blu-Ray for our living room and PC needs, get Linux and refuse to purchase MS products and rather rip them and share them online in a an epic scale...
Oh wait, this is already happening. It really sucks that a company that's really brought PC's to todays level is the same company that could be their demise as a gaming platform! They owe us PC gamers some more loyalty.Â

Microsoft is viewed, in my mind as some evil corporation out to get us all. I admit, some of their business practices are questionable. The bottom-line is, we live in a free-market society and Microsoft, despite numerous blunders, delivers the goods. Inevitably, the future of gaming is going to be tied to multi-platforms and various providers of various services. It won't just be Microsoft then. So step back and take a deep breath. . .
The bottom line, with the release of Vista and the advent and market-share slowly coming to the x64 and dual-chip generation, coupled with advanced PCIe video umphf-the pc is the powerhouse and will remain to be. It's economics though. A PC gamer just has to shell out more, more often to keep his/her rig up-to-par for the current gen of games out on our platform. Microsoft wanting to cross-platform games, Shadowbane and a few others so far that I'm aware of-great! It adds a larger base, more development attention to both sides. I have friends who aren't PC-Gamers but, are die-hard X-Box 360 players; alas we can play together! Why the angst?
Besides, most of the cross-platformed games are going to be online games. I don't play many multiplayer games. Maybe that is why I'm not as fumed. Though, when the time comes I will purchase a game-time card or whathaveyou to play what multi-player games I have that are platformed via the 360. If you don't want to play cross-platformed as the poster above me highlight; it's free anyway-no big deal.
Microsoft......if they'll keep on killing PC gaming as you've said soon we'll move to Linux (free OS) - what will they do next to keep us using Windows?PredatorRules
its called vista and they copied the style off Linux like the frames and how you can view your work. but Linux does a better job go check at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bD9vvNZLAwA

Wow, your right. Linux is way better. Makes me want to get a cheap PC just to learn how to use linux just in case Microdorks do screw up the PC as we know it today.Everyone, please, get facts right before going crazy like 'OMZGZGz, M$ are makinz us payyyyy'
Read this. http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Live/Pages/AboutLive.aspx
The system is exactly the same as XBL for GfWL, except you don't have to pay for PC to PC matchmaking, only PC to 360. It's a shared gamertag system, so if you have a 360 gold account, then you have a GfW gold account.

First off the masses aren't moving to Linux. Just isn't happening. The average person doesn't have the capacity, nor time to learn to use a new OS. And lastly good luck getting support for games. And Blu-ray???, the saturation of Blu-ray is minimal at best. People aren't trading in their cheap DVD players to use Blu-ray. Blu-ray has another five years before it goes anywhere(if it isn't eclipsed by something better).
Secondly the console wars are over. I could post countless articles stating that Sony blew the whole PS3 thing. Wii is the number one unit for sales and Microsoft trumps Sony due to it's lower price and Xbox Live. This isn't my opinion, just look at Sony's end of quarter profits. Down down down. Microsoft is up. Do some research before you post dribble.Â
The majority will never refuse to buy MS products, that's like saying let boycott gas because of high prices. They have made thier place in the market and have a foothold as the number one OS on earth. I am not saying it's fair, but it is a fact. What ever the future holds, MS will be there, with or without the whiners. That is why Bill is so rich and your not.Â
If you want to stay away from Vista and Live, but still to get DirectX10 goodness, then there is hope.
Someone is already working on something that will allow DirectX10 instructions to be recognized on platforms other than Vista.
Right now it will only work for XP in it's alpha stage, but as it matures there are plans to include MacOSX and Linux support.
I had blogged about this porject in detail here: "DirectX 10, not just for Vista anymore"
You guys who cant tell that GFW smell like fish are idiots. M$ wants to have total control over your online gaming and charge you for most trivial things that were always considered as free.
And have you guys forgoten, or perhaps missed what happened beetween Epic and M$? When Epic wanted to release GOW maps for free on Xbox Live, but M$ forced them to charge for it? Well, it will be the similar deal with GFW, once M$ "convince" any game developer to use GFW.
IMO Jason's article is pretty much dead on spot:

Even if they do get it working...how long do you think they will last in court? If you want to stay away from Vista and Live, but still to get DirectX10 goodness, then there is hope.

To be honest I actually think moving all games to the 360 would be a good thing if........................... all FPS and 3PS games used KB+M. To me that is the only negative.Â
The fact that even if you go out and buy the best CPU and video card money can buy right now you will only have a top system for 2 or 3 major game titles and then there will be a new game you can't quite max out.Â
The console does do one great thing, it standardizes the market so every game runs the same for everyone. That is a wonderful thing. But I will not play FPS games with a controller and that is the only thing wrong with it.
First the Xbox360 steals all our titles, then they force us to pay $250 for the **** Vista OS to use DX10, and now it turns out that the Games For Windows scheme is just a big scam to force PC multiplayer to be pay-to-play: http://www.gametab.com/news/900620/
I doubt Microsoft is killing PC gaming. Many titles for x360 will end up being ported on to the PC. Microsoft made it easier for developers to develop games for both pc and x360.
Microsoft will have free multiplayer for pc to pc gameplay. It will only cost money if you want to play with anyone who is on x360. Just to realize that microsoft will have a really hard time competiting xfire, gamespy and developers who offer free multiplayer game play for their games.
I find this ironic because it seems right now if it weren't for Microsoft, PCs would not have the amount of success they have been getting.. Your crying about ONE OS that was just released and expecting to run brilliently at the boot up... Not to mention that Microsoft DOES NOT CONTROL which games go ont he pc and which goes on the Xbox360 inless they make it THEMSELVES.. and last I chekced there are plenty of independent devs..sSubZerOo
Yup it's just that people are choosing to play games on console over PC. And I'm about as old of a PC gamer as the get. I was playing PC games back on the Apple IIe! Way before Doom 1 or Wolfinstein, I remember the day those games came out. Still I have just about had it with PC gamming and am probably going to get a 360.

Actually, if you look at it, they have broken no laws. Everything used so far are APIs and SDKs which are given away from free. From what I can tell. They are doing what WINE does for Linux. it just provides a layer that looks at the commands foriegn to the OS and translates them to their equivalent on for that OS.Â
M$ wants to have total control over your online gaming and charge you for most trivial things that were always considered as free.neojamLike what? Playing vs. 360 users? Multiplayer achievements? Matchmaking? Those generally aren't in most games (FPS for matchmaking - they're a staple in RTS' I admit). So what are these things that we're used to being free that they're charging for?

Can you please explain how you are being ripped off? Did you bother to read the silver membership features? How many games offer any of these things? I would say it is a major plus for PC gamers and I only hope more games will use the service. Like the reviews for Halo 2 said "Easiest multiplayer system of any PC title to date".Â

While its not that bad i hope not a lot of games adopt it...Since silver wont be able to host games well we will see a lot less games being hosted and more people who can only join there most will be full.also i believe this system is p2p(or is it hosted in MS servers?)?Which means no dedicated servers can be hosted which sucks because of slow connection with certain hosts.

This is typical MS tactics for you, and the prime reason I wish them to get fried in the console wars! That's why even Epic is saying windows live isn't worth it and MS is being greedy.....
Â
Most of the gold features are things we usually get for free, so paying for their service is pretty much BS. Not only that game content will be priced at premiums instead of usually being free. Another thing that PC gamers have always gotten without having to pay.Â
Â
If you want a live like experience you can easily just use Xfire, as it provides the exact same features(Except cross platform MP) and is completely free. Â

How about the fact that if your games use Live you can't include 3rd part voice support? You have to leave that for gold live.Â
Microsoft IS greedy, that's why mr. Gates at one point had a fortune of over 100 billion dollars, which speaks of his "dedication" to the PC users rather than his own profit. My father owns a successful firm himself, and he chooses to send the money into the firm to benefit products and users and his employees rather than fill up his wallet.
MS does have approximately the same TURNOVER as Sony, but Sony has more profits, as they have a much more diverse product catalogue than MS, and MS sell alot of things with a loss (like the 360 as they did the X-Box). Sony is mostly a hardware seller, and software sales is always more fickle than hardware. That fact aside; both Sony and MS have lost value over the last 2-3 years. Another MS tactic, I've found, is to rather tell people how shabby your competition is, rather than highlight your own product. Peter Moore for instance, spends half his interview time trashtalking competitors. Perhaps he's afraid of another Dreamcast?...
