When I startup my system, I have 43 processes listed under Windows task manager, 45 including AVG antivirus. I'm using Vista 64-bit. Most of these processes seem to be from Windows. Is there anyway to minimize these processes without affecting system stability? I've already used the "msconfig" command to reduce the number of startup programs to just Windows Defender, Nvidia Driver helper service, Nvidia Vista display driver, AVG, and the OS itself.

Also, I have 12 different "svchost.exe" processes. Is this normal?

Having a number of svchosts is normal, as they contain a number of services each, so the number of services that you have enabled will determine the number of svchosts present, you can disable some services present though though.

And as long as they are Windows processes, I'd leave them alone, as you'll most likely run into stability issues (or some features may stop working) if you close them. Also, some you won't be able to disable, and others may automatically start themselves back up if they are ended.

If you want to get some ram back, you can look for guides on the net on what services are safe to disable or set to manual startup.

RAM isn't an issue (I have 4GB, 24% memory usage). I just like to get the most out of my system. :P

I have 75 running all the time! I've gone into MSCONFIG to stop a bunch of startup programs, but there's still so many happening in the background.

That would imply that you're using nearly 1gb of ram just idling. That isn't normal
