The funny thing is, those same people who scream bloody murder if they see a kid watch a violent movie or play a 15+ game, say nothing bad about books :)
Well when i was 12 i started reading "American psycho" (Bret Easton Ellis) and "the 120 days of Sodom" (a very interesting book from Marquis de Sade), now those were some twisted and disturbing books, I remember i sometimes needed to pauze with my reading because I was to disgusted and shocked to continue.
The only effect i think those books had on me was becoming more humane (to extreme extends, like for example, even though you could say the psycho is extremly evil, he is actually a victime, he does not choose to become a psychopath, he hates his life and he knows he is completly twisted but the urge to kill is just too powerfull = which makes him very human indeed)Bros89
Interesting. I've seen both movies, and I know the movies don't do the original books justice (they almost never do). American Psycho is indeed on my list of books to read.
Growing up my parents didn't censor what I watched, read, or played with the exception of porn and for some strange reason Beavis and Butthead. Everything else was free game.
I got Mortal Kombat when it came, out my favorite movies were Terminator 2 and Robocop as a kid. I mean, I was exposed to a lot, even nudity when we stumbled upon magazines and ominous unlabeled VHS tapes haha.
I turned out fine, probably better than a lot of kids these days.
Now, I see my cousins. Completely coddled and sheltered for most of their lives until their mid to late teens, and now in their 20s they are socially awkward messes, depressed and anxious. This, of course, can be due to a variety of entirely different reasons, as I'm sure you know, but I'm sure it didn't help either.
