Hey, my monitor keeps dropping out of frequency, seemingly at random. Sometimes its 5 seconds, 5 minutes, or 2 hours before it does it. The operating frequency is; HF - 30 -70Hz, VF - 40 - 60Hz (or close enough to that). However, most of the time it reports it as operating in excess of 180Hz on the HF, or 90Hz on the VF!

Ive tried reinstalling my video card drivers, forcing a 60hz override in dxdiag - everything I can basically think of. Its a standard def. monitor, runs at 1024x768 and 32 bit colour. Ive never had an issue with these settings before. It seems fine when its idle, but as soon as anything moves, it appears to drop out of frequency. I once had it complain that ati2dvag.dll was stuck in an infinite loop - this caused my PC to reboot at random. I have also experienced random reboots. Im really confused as to whats going on, I only went away for one weekend for goodness sake :P n it was a-okay before then.

Can anyone help?

(and for those of you who are wondering, I am using another PC to write this).

EDIT: Ive just checked my system event viewer, and there are a lot of DCOM and ati2mtag errors

I'd try completely unistalling your ATI drivers and reinstalling them, as it seems that they are the main suspect.

Does this happen in safe-mode as well?

Iv tried reinstalling them/uninstalling them multiple times, but it still doesnt work. Ive not tried starting up in safe mode, what does that actually do? Ive tried last known good config, and it still does it. Im not sure how to actually boot into safe mode tho.

To boot up into safe mode, after the POST disappears, but before the XP loading screen appears (there's around a couple of seconds gap), press F8; and you'll come up with a boot menu.

Scroll down to Safe mode and hit enter.

You'll then load up into safe mode :)

I tried booting into safe mode, but it wont let me run games, so theres so way of testing them as the culprit. My monitor is actually a 6 year old Advent regular monitor, so it could be the monitor is now knackered? I that a feasible idea considering the problem?

Well if it stops on 3d I would suspect its your video card and not your monitor if you have any spare monitors or video cards try them out.

It did it to me whilst I was just on my desktop as well, so I suspect it aint just games. It seems totally random though, sometimes it runs for a whole day wih no probs.

Do the drop-outs occur while you are just at the desktop?

They occur at any time, anywhere. Just a few mins ago I just got a grey screen at random for no reason, and sometimes it just drops out when i so much as move the mouse.
