Occasionally and randomly when I am playing certain games such as Skyrim or Bf3 my monitor goes black but my pc stays on. There is a loud fan-type sound and the game audio continues for a moment. I then have to restart my computer. This generally happens 15-30 minutes into the game. I have a gtx 560 ti, no overclock, an i5 2500k, 750w power supply, and 8 gb of ram. I have monitored the gpu and the temps don't go above 60-65. This is a brand new computer and any help in fixing it would be apprieciated.

Is your 560 Ti factory overclocked? Are you on the latest GPU drivers?

It's not factory overclocked. I am currently on driver 285.62 and have tried the most recent beta drivers. The problem happens for all the drivers I've tried. Thanks for the quick reply.

Maybe. The graphics card seems to run the games fine, at least while the monitor is working. Once the screen goes black, I restart my computer then can play the game for however long once I start it up again. But then when I want to play again, maybe a couple hours later, the monitor blacks out in the first few minutes. Then the same process.

It does sound like a defect GPU since your temps are okay. The best thing to do would be trying with another card. Two other things you can try, if your mobo supports it are switching to integrated graphics (if you have it), and putting your GPU into another PCI-e slot (again if you have it). Just for trying to locate the problem.

When I first got the computer the gpu wasn't even being detected, its as if it wasn't there. I switched it to the other slot on my motherboard, an asus z68, and it was able to detect the card. However, I still had problems.

Can you try ithe PC on another monitor?

Also press 'Start' and typeEVENTVWR in the box at the bottom and see if there are any red error messages.

The best way is to try a different GPU on your sistem. If it doesn't happen again, it must be you GPU.

I could, but I'm not sure its the monitor because it works fine while not playing gpu demanding games. Also when I have the problem the monitor says lost connection. Could that have anything to do with it?

Hmm, I'm not sure about this, but I had a similar problem when I bought my new PC back in the day.. In the end it was a faulty RAM. You should try memtest, to check the RAM for errors.

Havn't tried that yet. Hopefully I can get a replacement gpu soon. I'll try memtest as well.

Seems more like either a RAM, power supply or even a hard drive failure...

Make sure the power and data cables on your hdd are seated properly in both the disk and mainboard sockets.

I don't know about the temps inside your case and how your PSU is mounted, but while gaming, check the air which comes out the back of your power supply by simply holding your hand behind the fan. Some power supplies are really sensitive to high temperatures and switch themselves off on occasion (I've had it a few times with my Antec TPQ1200 in my mistake called CM Storm Trooper).

Thanks for the help everyone. Unfortunately, it appears to be a faulty gpu and/or motherboard. I'm sending it back to the company for replacements.
