I'm wondering, should I buy Morrowind GOTY or Oblivion GOTY? I don't meet oblivion's system requirements, but I could use Oldblivion I suppose.

actually, now that i see this topic, i realized i have a similar question. I should have a good enough system to play oblivion, but which game is more immersive, fun, and has a better story?

Oblivion with mods is far superior to Morrowind, but that's damning with faint praise. Morrowind is crushingly dull and repetative. The geographical terrain is interesting enough, but there's nothing populating that geography. The NPCs are cardboard cutouts with no memory and generic speeches. You can rob them blind, leave town, come back and they won't remember a thing you said or did. The game suffers from serious levelling issues. By the time you reach level 8 or so, you can pretty much kill anything you meet with nothing more than a harsh look. Quests are stultifyling pointless. Go to A, kill x number of B, fetch y number of item C, and come back to me for reward D.

I'd say pick up Gothic III or the Witcher over either Morrowind or Oblivion. But if you do have your heart set on one of those two, Oblivion offers a much more choesive story with better, more involved side quests. Just be sure to get the levelling mods. (I suggest also killing off the fast travel option and limiting the radious that unexplored places on the map are revealed).

Morrowind.

I've got 350+ hours in that game and I think it's one of the best of all time. There are so many great mods out there for it.

Oblivion with mods is equal in quality to Morrowind. Morrowind is tougher to get into, but has a deeper, more detailed world for you to play in. Oblivion has better graphics, more action-oriented gameplay, and a more cohesive world.

Both are terrific games.

well the only reason i bring up the question is because i'm getting two games within the next month or so. I'm getting The Witcher this saturday, then when I'm done playing it, I'm planning on picking up Oblivion. I was just curious if I should stick with that idea, or pick up Morrowind instead.

Haven't played The Witcher (anxiously waiting for Christmas when I could get my hands on TW:EE), but from what I've played of it in the demo, it would seem that going from The Witcher to Oblivion is a much less jarring transition.

I do not agree on many points. This is way i see it LEVELING is much much bether in morrowind. In oblivion, enemies level uo with you,so you never feel "powerfull" because there is allways someone more powerfull than you so you dont feel acomplishment In morrowind you can get really powerfull and enjoy your power + Leveling system in morrowind is much bether, you can level separate dagger, sword, short sword etc. - in oblivion its just simplified - blades I mean, monk who is using just short knife will be able to use long blade (which is bad for monk) even if he never touched it in his whole life because they are all called BLADES and fall under same category (i might be wrong about names, but you get idea) STORY Morrowind have verry DEEP story Oblivion story is just shallow and washed out VARIETY Morrowind have much more variety + much more different (and more unique) enemies + Everything in morrowind makes sence If you want FAST TRAVEL - pay for it (mages guilt or stilt strider) MODS Its not fair comparing Oblivion + mods vs just Morrowind Morrowind + mods is also awesome even though i prefer VANILLA games (mods sometimes add some things that are just ridiculous and have not much meaning in game and ruin lore) GOTHIC 3 ... is great RPG but broken game + if we take in consideration that TC said that he doesnt MEET MINIMUM requirements for Oblivion, and G3 is much more demanding game due to bad optimization and (arguable) bether graphics

It's user created content that makes changes to the game itself to improve (most of the time) the overall experience. Don't like the way characters look in a game? look for a mod. Combat is too arcade-y in Oblivion? Download a mod to slow things down, and so on and so forth.

For Elder Scrolls games, Planet Elder Scrolls is the best source of mods.

Morrowind, by a landslide (imo). I did not like Oblivion. Morrowind was a lot more engaging, and the environments were designed a lot better. Why does Morrowind look so much better than Oblivion in those images? O.o Easy choice, Morrowind.

It depends on your taste, but I liked The Witcher a lot more than Oblivion, and maybe as much as Morrowind. The Witcher, is clearly underrated, that's for sure. Excellent game.

I recommend Morrowind even if you can play Oblivion on highest settings. Morrowind is one of the best PC games of all time in my opinion, and Oblivion is one of the worst (that I've played).

Its because i posted OLD blivion picture vs Morrowind picture (OLDblivion is software that disables most demanding graphical settings so you can play Oblivion on older weak computers)

The witcher beats both morrowind and oblivion in every aspect of the game what leads even Gothic 3. Gt3 is awfully developed and optimization sux. I would say the same of oblivion and the combat stye is kinda boring. Also you need to have a powerful pc to play it well. But between morrowind and Oblivion I would choose oblivion if I had the requeriments for playing it. Still morrowind can provide a great gaming experience so it's up to you and your PC specs.

Morrowind has the best mods. Well, Oblivion has great mods too, but it's a much more flawed game out-of-box, and.... yeah. Well, both games are worth playing. Morrowind is the better game. Oblvion is newer, and has the entailing advantages that goes along with that. Both games are all about the mods. Morrowind lasted much longer for me without them, but mods are a vital feature of both games. There is just so much quality stuff out there.

Just for fun take a look at the Morrowind Grass mod (which I've never tried and have no idea how well it works, nor what kind of beefy PC is required):

I have to say Morrowind is the better game. I enjoyed both games but after playing Morrowind I actually fell a big disappointment in Oblivion, it just felt like a downgrade in many areas. Morrowind + 2 expansions is definitely worth playing. I havent even bothered trying out the 2 expansions for Oblivion.

  • Morrowind has a deep story
  • Large world to explore and is worth exploring
  • Leveling System is good
  • Difficulty depends on the area (dont go there if you are are not powerful enough). There is a difficulty slider if you think the game is getting to easy.
  • No fast travel and fast travel costs money. This feature pushes you to explore more
  • Many quests, more than in Olbivion
  • Not much voice acting, a lot of reading
  • Because of the old engine there might be loading when you enter new area (area is for example 50x50 m)
  • More equpment customization, able to wear more items than in Oblivion.

  • Oblivion story is poor (cant belive they gave an award for Oblivion story, I have seen that story in movies and other games already).
  • Smoother transition between areas than in Morrowind
  • A lot of voice acting (even though you only hear like 4 different voices)
  • Leveling system is really stupid, enemies get stronger than you do, at the end killing enemies is just a pain. I have finished the game on level 6 (I think you can finish it on level 2). Finishing it on level 6 is easier than on level 35 or higher!!!!! WHAT!!!! How is that possible?!?!?!? So if you do get Oblivion consider a mod that removes enemy level up
  • Also to get better and more expensive items you need to level up....
  • Improved combat system (personal opinion). In morrowind its more up to a chance, e.g. blocking, if your block skill is low than it is very unlikely that your character will block an attack. In Oblivion you block the attacks yourself but the block skill just estimates the reduction of demage you take. Your arrows always hit an enemy unlike Morrowind which is also up to a chance (even if you shoot point blank).
  • Horse is only good for traveling, cant fight from horse, Always have to get off it.
  • No point in exploring (unlike Morrowind), as you wont find better items unless you level up. All areas are nearly the same.
  • Fast traveling = good and bad.

Anyways there are many differences. Some people prefer Oblivion over Morrowind while others prefer Morrowind over Oblivion. Both games are good and you should be able to enjoy both.

Mods are user created content. Select a mod that you think is good, download and install. Some add extra stuff like armour, weapons, location. Some improve graphics and etc. Some mods are completely different from the original game (basically a new game). Most mods are available for free. www.moddb.com is a good mod website, it has mods for many games. However if you are looking for a mod for a specific game it might be better to go on official forums.

Both Oblivion and Morrowind are worth trying, but aim for the GOTY or pack editions if you want to give both games your best shot. I would lean more torwards Morrowind for story however, I never finished the main story in Oblivion and went off to do all the side quests instead.

Playing Oblivion right now, and I have to say, your statement about Oblivion being the worst is absolutely off base. Granted, I'm playing with mods.

Well morrowind requires you that you keep level in order ot survive and almost all speeches are text no sound, so keep reading the dialogues, also you dont get a quests you note what happen in your journal, eg day 21 i did that i get that quest! That means you gonna have to to look your journal and read the directions that the NPC gave you no indicators in worldmap so i hope you are a hardcore rpg player or you get bored of it!

Same heare oblivion is great there a bout a million worse games than that and many worse rpgs... also unlike morrowind its simpler to play it!
