You made a thread asking for opinions, and now we're not allowed to post our opinions? Odd.

I did kinda contradict myself lol, but I meant the thread to be about actual failing games.I never played it, but I heard Daikatana was a huge disappointment.nLEyETnYeah I never got to play it either, it's one of those games I wanna play just to see why it was so bad.
HL2 Episode 1....:|MrLions
the only bad thing about it was that it was short. other than that it was pretty solid. and i personally am a fan of true RPG's like kotor and baldurs gate, but i loved oblivion and spent hundreds of hours on it
What games have you found that were more overhyped than a round of bingo at the old folks hom, but in the end failed to meet expectations of EVERYONE (Not yourself) I'm talking about games like Hellgate London (Which personally was on my top wants back when I first heard about it)Hells_rebelion
i was so hyped about this when the first review came out i thought the reviewer was on crack or something.
Everquest 2 - You may say it's a succesful game, but everquest 1 was the biggest mmo in numbers of subscribed users before WoW came out (same month release of EQ2) and now barely has anywhere from 100-200k subscribed users compared to WoW's 9 million. And EQ was really the pioneer in power housing MMOs today, a lot of basic things are from EQ1 were taken and implemented into WoW, even the color and fonts when standard are exactly the same. For example when you whisper someone, they use the exact same font and purple coloring to indicate whispers/tells from player to player. This was first seen in EQ1 which started in the late 90s.
Vanguard SOH - This game had a huge following due to game being developed by the original developing team for everquest 1. So people automatically had it in their heads this was the type of game they wanted to play with their past relations with the original EQ, but the dev team made the same mistake twice it seems and sold out to SOE and failed again like they have previously. Too many bugs at release, incredibly high spec requirements which no hardware could play well at that time (even now, it was like playing crysis but in a hardcore WoW enviroment)
Hellgate london - Another huge following due to the fact that this development team was being developed by the original maker of the Diablo series. The main guy behind it Bill Roper formed his own company Flagship studios in hopes to be the Blizzard as himself as the boss reaping all the rewards. So he decieded to make a 3D version of diablo in a futuristic world with guns. Sounds great on paper for most people, but the game was incredibly trash. Probably the biggest let down due to the fact that diablo fans were reached a very broad audience.

How about the game that is almost a curse word around here?
Of course I'm talking about Kane and Lynch...
final fantasy 9 was very dissapointing for me also. Couldnt really get into the chars or storyline.

was there a PC port of this game?
Fable was a huge disappointment for Herrick. As I always say in threads like this, IGN hyped the hell out of this game. They released this huge review a week before the game came out. Actually, I'm looking at their review now and it was written August 27 2004 and the game came out September 14 2004. I thought it was a week before but whatever. Yeah...this game was a big disappointment. Way too easy, features that were hyped up weren't in the game etc...
Of course it's partly my fault for falling for the hype. I've sworn never to fall for hype again!

They did think about porting it over to the pc but becuase of the poor sales FF VII and VIII got on the pc becuase noone knew about them they canceled it but i think IX wsa the best with XII in secound.

I do know there was not. I asked becuase it was a console game, and shouldn't be mentioned here. I know I should get used to it since people treat PC forum as Console leftover or general gaming forum, but sometimes I cannot help but say something.
Oblivion was far FAR from a failure when it comes to the overall masses (as the OP points out). It's a huge success as most people and review sites love it. Siofenwho ever said that "in the end" meant reviews by game sites? oblivion is pretty gun the first few hours, but when you discover how generic it is, how little character progression there is(because of level scaling), and how shallow it is, you discover it is a poorly thought out game that grows less fun the more you play it.

And when it comes to the overall masses, reviewers and gamers alike, Oblivion is far from a failure. You could rant to the worlds end about how generic or uninpired oblivion is, it wont change the fact that the masses generally love the game. So did Oblivion fail? I'd say not.
Hellgate:london for me, I was so incensed by ex Diablo creators that I, too thought the initial flop reviews had been written by crack swallowing, pill-popping lunatics who hate video games for fun.
I tried for over twenty hours of gameplay to justify my disagreement with the aforementioned crack addicts, nonetheless I was ultimately shamed into being a hypemonkey.

Yeah, Oblivion was well received by the overall mass, including my friends and me. I didn't realize anyone could hate this game until i visited these forums and saw all the reasons (to some of which i agree now).
Anyway, i say SC: ghost is a good contender.

Hellgate London was the first thing that came to my mind when I read the title of this topic. It was hyped endlessly by PC Gamer and Gamespot, but failed so badly it took down its developer with it.
Whoever says Oblivion is on some seriously good crack. Regardless of what a few closed-minded RPG snobs on a gaming forum says about it, this is the game that took Bethesda from an obscure PC developer into a company that RPG fans worldwide keep an eye on. If anything it is the greatest success Bethesda could hope for. The sales and awards numbers dont lie, regardless of whatever lame argument can come up against it.

To be honest, I never doubted that it sold 4m units, especially since at that point Morrowind had been $20 on Xbox for roughly 2 years and $10 on PC for roughly 3. However, Oblivion almost matched that sales figure in around only 9 months. Source http://www.efluxmedia.com/news_Bethesda_Preps_Elder_Scrolls_Oblivion_GOTY_Edition_06936.html Since you want to compare the two, observe that Morrowind only won three critical RPG awards http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_III:_Morrowind while Oblivion won nine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elder_Scrolls_Oblivion Regardless of what gamespot forumites think, these awards are significant and show that Oblivion had much more commercial and critical success than Morrowind did. And yes, commercial success is important. If it wasnt Black Isle would still be in business.
Age of Conan.
-note one of the main reasons it got a 8.5 was because FUNCOM paid gamespot for a decent rating and the reviewer didnt actually play all the way to lvl 80

Great success or not, it still failed in the sense that it let down a huge percentage of fans who enjoyed Morrowind. But for everyone else (and non-RPG fans), it's great. But all they remind is of people who watch their HDTV on basic cable stations are think to themselves "Oooh, isn't this HD picture beautiful". Regardless, I'm hoping they simply made Oblivion as a cash cow, and will hopefully deliver a true sequel to The Elder Scrolls eventually. Sure, they're working on Fallout 3 now, but it doesn't look like they put that much into it.
Well kane and lynch is the obvious ones, PERSONALLY, I found that GTA4 was so hyped that when I got it, it just didn't live up, mass effect also, its a good game but it was very overhyped, oblivion actually lived up to my standards, Alone in the Dark, erm can't think of any more.
[edit]: Hellgate London, although I have to say I don't dislike the game
