Most overly hyped games that in the end FAILED?

Well kane and lynch is the obvious ones, PERSONALLY, I found that GTA4 was so hyped that when I got it, it just didn't live up, mass effect also, its a good game but it was very overhyped, oblivion actually lived up to my standards, Alone in the Dark, erm can't think of any more.

I gotta agree with GTA4. It's not out on PC yet, I know, but I was desperate for a PS3 game and given its high praise, I picked it up. It's not a terrible game, sure, but I really don't feel like it's that much of an improvement over GTA3.

Age of Conan.

-note one of the main reasons it got a 8.5 was because FUNCOM paid gamespot for a decent rating and the reviewer didnt actually play all the way to lvl 80

I agree about AoC. Complete letdown and waste of money. Everybody was heralding it as the WoW killer. And well, look at what we got...

Skeptical about WAR too. None of these games will be the ever elusive "WoW Killer", but let's hope and pray WAR is at least better than AoC.

Great success or not, it still failed in the sense that it let down a huge percentage of fans who enjoyed Morrowind. But for everyone else (and non-RPG fans), it's great. But all they remind is of people who watch their HDTV on basic cable stations are think to themselves "Oooh, isn't this HD picture beautiful". Regardless, I'm hoping they simply made Oblivion as a cash cow, and will hopefully deliver a true sequel to The Elder Scrolls eventually. Sure, they're working on Fallout 3 now, but it doesn't look like they put that much into it.

You cant say a huge percentage, since nobodys ever talked to every single person who enjoyed Morrowind. I enjoyed Morrowind, and Daggerfall, and Arena, and I thought Oblivion was great. I know Im not the only one who feels this way. Just because the 10 or 15 people on this site that love Morrowind and happen to hate Oblivion feel the way they do means that the whole world feels the same. Besides this thread is about critical and commercial failures. The TC specifically stated that personal feelings do not matter.

I would say that Mark of Chaos failed to deliver what could have been great.

It at least disappointed the Warhammer fans I know.

i thought mark of chaos was ok. the only ting bugging me about it is the poor optimazation and how laggy it was on the most powerful rigs. true it didn't deliver on the lore part, but its an rts. i can live with commanding warriorpriests against the chaos.

Star Wars Galaxies could have millions of subscribers to this day if it had been any good. It could have easily become the most popular MMO up until WoW was released. Skeptomania

it could possibly have stayed more popular than wow IF the devs didn't try to copy wow in the updates, give jedi's to everyone and squashed some of the annoying bugs instead of changing the game into a wow look-alik.

Good call, I totally forgot about that one. It had potential for being the long awaited quality old-west themed action game that we've all been wanting. But it didn't deliver. Sigh, someday.

Well for me the Guild Wars expansions , loved the first one and the expansions sucked , factions made the game much much easier by ben able to reach lvl 20 in like 2 days and Nightfall just plain boring.

Also im on of those guys who loved Oblivion , havent played Morrowind , got the GOTY edition but played it a little on my laptop but since I didnt have a mouse besides the one on the laptop didnt like , but going to install it in my desktop to see if its true.

Also GTA 4 for xbox 360 bought it , and the story was cool but after wasnt that great. The online was boring.

Another game Assassins Creed , waited so much and was good for like 3 days then It started to get boring.

Doom 3

Walk into room, lights go out, kill bad guys, repeat.

ASSassINS Creed - I was excited about this game, bought it, played for a few hours and just sort of got tired of it. The graphics were awesome and I guess the story was okay, but the settings just seem so redundant early on and the combat was awkward for me. I'm not sure what it is but the game just didn't grab me the first time out. I expect that I'll try it out again later when I'm in the mood. I should also note that I actually bought a new computer in expectation of this game.

Note on Oblivion: First of all, I'm not an Oblivion fan or proponent. I did own the game and played it for while. For some time I was sucked in but just kind of gave up on it - other than AC and this game I don't usually just stop playing games. However, I wouldn't call this game a failure. It was a huge commericial success and based on what I've seen it has a lot more fans than naysayers.

I wrote "Spore" because I have doubts about the basic game mechanics and how fun it'll actually be.

In any event, it's either going to be bigger than the Sims, or the biggest flop ever. No middle ground.

I dont think anyone can argue that this was one of the most hyped shooters of all time, and it failed miserably.

then the demo came out, and people thought it sucked. So there goes your initial sales.

it wont fail, though. Maybe technically it will as it will be mediocre, but it will sell well which, in the end, is all that matters.

This is easy:

Hell Gate: Same stuff over and over, boring!

Oblivion: I didn't even like Morrowind (let me jump up and down to raise levels....DUUUUUMMMMMM) So it had a lot of content, but I could take a nap in between fun moments in that game...so I never got that far!

AoC: Played it, great graphics, horrible content, what a grind fest, and way too linear

UFO: Any one of the famous knock offs that will never be what XCOM was

Fable: I thought it was an open world game, eeeeek for zones!

Witcher: Ummmm, yeah, just because it's got half dressed chicks on playing cards doesn't make it a good game.

STALKER: BUG, CRASH, BUG, BUG, CRASH, BUG, BUG, BUG (see a pattern in this) this should be in the hall of shame!

I'm always disappointed in these type threads. People don't understand the point. Instead of giving examples of hyped games that actually were not very successful, they simply give examples of games they didn't like, even if they were a huge success. Big difference.Qixote

Games are pretty subjective, what constitues a game "failing" can most times be personal opinion :)
