Another one of these threads, is this a weekly requisite question now?
I thought for sure it would be common knowledge at this point that the answer is BioShock ;)
Hell, I had more fun doing stuff that wasn't on the objective. I would ambush a truck passing down the road and it was almost 100x more fun planning and executing then the entire game combined. Swiftstrike5
Yes, this is something I absolutely love about Crysis! Completing objectives is fun, the game is solid, but I'm glad they provided the creative freedoms to also "mess around" with non-objective tasks (until the game becomes more linear anyway). This allowance is a characteristic that helps distinguish Crysis and sets it apart from (and above IMO) other first person shooters of recent release.
Personally, I don't always want to be lead by the hand in a game (COD4 for example), I don't always need the pacing dictated in a campaign, set me into an environment with tools (customization, free-roam, vehicles, object interaction, etc) to complete the objective in the manner I'd like and at my chosen pace --- which might mean having some non-objective fun and experimentation along the way :D :D
There is, of course, room for improvement. I'm extremely anxious for the next FPS that can top Crysis in it's approach and degree of sandbox combat (Crysis Warhead? Far Cry 2?).
Starcraft its not even that good i've played for better RTS games than that.Poshkidney
Sure, CoH is probably a better game now, but that's 8 freaking years after StarCraft.
Besides, the praise StarCraft gets comes from just how competitive it is, and the last I looked, no RTS is as balanced as StarCraft, that ought to count for something.
Oblivion
COD4
Two critically acclaimed games that are a dumbed down mess in every way.. Oblivion has hardly any rpg elements what so ever, its solely a psuedo action game with some pretend rpg elements.. CoD4 is a popcorn ride taking linear to a whole new level with endlessly respawning enemies, a cookie cutter counter terrorist story, dumb AI, and multiplayer that is good just not amazing like every one is claiming.
Bioshock, Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3, Age of Conan, Portal (Yeah. it was cute - but puhleeeeze!)
enofr
Portal is cute? Cute? It wasn't just cute. It's smart. It has one of the best humor in videogames, in quite a long time. It's got some nice thrills, especially when you go for those thrilling jumps. It's innovative. It's different.
It was also one of the best games last year, with or without the orange box deal that came with it.

That's what the game is all about - having fun with the tools, the environment and the AI. Crysis offers plenty of opportunities like your truck ambush.
Seems to me like you were expecting something that wasn't delivered (for no rational reason that I can see), and you're disappointed that the game didn't live up to your crazy and nonsensical expectations. That doesn't make the game overrated, it simply means your expectations are unrealistically high.
I don't think my expectations were too high. I expected a Sandbox game, which means exploring and rewards for exploring (maybe finding hidden ammo, weapons, w/e). That's all I expected. I don't think that's unrealistic.
[QUOTE="Swiftstrike5"]I don't know, but I expected to be able to find a well guarding korean gunship, take it, and blast the crap out of anything in my path. Instead I was limited to cloak, run past enemies, decloak. Or shoot enemies, they call in reinforcements, fight more koreansfatshodan
What's the difference between taking a gunship to kill enemies (you can take gunboats, by the way) or killing enemies with your guns? Again, think about it from a real world context - that kind of deviation from your mission isn't rational. It makes no sense, and besides, for the majority of the game that example wouldn't be applicable because not much of the game is set besides the ocean.
What's the difference between guns and a gunship? It's different. A change in pace for a slow, linear game. CoD4 did it. Why can't Crysis offer a similar escape?
There are gunships in multiplayer, so they could have easily added a gunship to the smaller maps. Even a tank and I would have been happy, but it's the SCAR or the AK throughout a majority of the game. If it's still unrealistic to add then it's because they made an entirely linear game. I've played some mods that were just amazing in comparision. Plenty of hidden weapons/vehicles/secrets.
If I wanted a "real world context" game I wouldn't have purchased the game with the nanosuit soldier and alien walkers on the back. There's plenty that isn't realistic in this game. It's sad that they would use the "realism" card to avoid putting in tanks, gunships, or hidden weapons. Especially when there's aliens, bulletproof koreans, nanosuits, invisibilty, a gauss gun that you can hold, a freeze ray, gunboats w/snipers, gunships that magicly know where you are, etc.
Oblivion and BioShock. Two games that receive praise for doing nothing new or nothing well.foxhound_fox
Oblivion I agree, but Bioshock I would have to disagree.. You rarely see it get raved about as being one of the best games, let alone one of the best shooters..
Wow can't believe all the Oblivion hate. That game had so much depth it wasn't even funny. The skill system was top notch also. I spent over 100 hours playing it.
I don't even feel there is an overrated game, usually rating are high for a reason. It's all pure opinion.

Oblivion's depth is non-existent. What depth?
Oblivion deep? wow dude, play baldur's gate 2, planescape torment, fallout 2 and comeback and tell us how deep Oblivion was. Oblivion starts out promising, but gets repetitive, shallow, no depth, boring npc, boring world, boring dialogue, awfull writing, repetitive music same voiceacting, shoddy A.I, lame level system, repetive forts, boring excuses for boss battles, again boring world compared to the witcher, gothic 1 and 2. Baldur's gate series had memorable npcs that draw smiles from fans (minsc).
Long story short, oblivion was not deep. should not be called an rpg.

I like Oblivion, but i do think it lacks depth, variety and content compared to Morrowind.
If you were to implement Oblivions graphics and combat into Morrowind, you would have one of the best games ever in my opinion.

Depth as in your able to go in any direction, and in all those direction you met the exact same thing? Nothing.
A skill system that was so "ingenious" that it really didnt even need there to begin with because you could be the master of everything? Seriously they could have ripped out the rpg skill system and it would have been the exact same game, because in the end you could max out every skill.. And even picking out the skill to beign with gave you no real penalities or advantages.

Am I the only one that thought the combat in Oblivion was stupid? You got like 3 to 6 different swings and for the most part they weren't very different or stratigic to use.. Alot of times I just pretty much exploited the Ai of hitting a few times jump back.. Rinse and repeat.
