I'm in the process of finding parts to build a computer and I ran into something that I have no idea about. It's a MSI NF980-G65 AM3 NVIDIA nForce 980a SLI HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard it say's it has onboard graphics and I was wondering if it would affect me putting graphics cards into the PCI slots, would I have to disable the onboard graphics first? If I do, how would I go about that?

The onboard will disable automatically or you can kill it in the BIOS. I would go for an AMD not an Nvidia chipset.

What are you looking to buy? Do you need SLI? I prefer to buy chipsets from the manufacturer, not third parties.

450s arn't worth it. If you want SLI go for 2 460's or a single 5870.

If you want 460's SLI'D

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128423- you need a 1366 processor (i7 930) for this

For a single 5870

Eh, looks like my only option is to go with the ATI because I want nothing to do with an intel processor

Good choice! You may also want to wait for the new GPU's coming out later this year from ATI, but the 5870 will last for a while yet.

What's wrong with using Nvidia motherboards for AMD processors? I'm using one right now (M4N75TD), and it's not giving me any problems.

Why would you use a chipset that isn't from AMD? Too much of chance for issues.

Eh, I don't wanna build something that I possibly won't like especially when a single 5870 is over $300, screw that. Plus Nvidia has better driver support than ATI, I'm just gonna try to find a good board that'll support Nvidia

Because it's the only thing that I can do to get SLI without any problems? Besides, the 750a and 980a chipsets were made for AMD processors in the first place. Don't see any reason why they would cause any issues unless the board itself was damaged.

Driver support again? Both companies have rubbish drivers occasionally. Your choice is based on that?

No, it's one of the small factors. I just know what I like, I've used Nvidia for years and I love their cards. I've played around with some friends comps that have ATI graphics cards and didn't really care for it.

The NF980-G65 will do fine, but if you're just planning to do two-way SLI, you might as well just get the M4N98TD from ASUS. It's cheaper, and you still get the full 16x/16x bandwidth for your video cards.

As for desertpython, I've had more problems with ATI drivers than nVidia ones, personally. Reason why I went from two 4890's to the GTX 480.

Thanks, much appreciated. I think I'll go with your suggestion and get the M4N98TD, Thanks again!

Not entirley true. If you build and install the OS before placing in the GPU, then you'll have to disable the onboard GPU from within the OS.

BIOS still needs to adjusted rather than disabling it in device manager.
