Using anything other than a mouse for an FPS is Blaspheme.
Even think about it, and God will Huff a kitten.
Use what you are comfortable using. Everyone is different, and there is nothing worse than trying to use a control scheme that you are uncomfortable with. If you play games better with a gamepad, then use a gamepad. Personally I prefer mouse/keyboard, but I've used joysticks and the MS Strategic Commander in the past where it suited particular types of games.
Don't be a sheep and follow what everyone else does. You play games for enjoyment, so how you control those games should be an enjoyable experience for you. There is no 'right way'.

Well I'm going to have to disagree with this. Yeah, games are for enjoyment, but seriously, in FPS games, you can't compete by using a controller. Where's the enjoyment? Ok, single player, then fine, multiplayer? not a chance.
As for using something you're not comfortable with, I used to use the arrow keys to move around in shooters. WASD was just awkward, but I learned how to do it anyway, because I knew I would be seriously at a disadvantage in multiplayer games. Now I can use it just fine. The sooner you can adapt and learn how to play using WASD (or mouse and keyboard) then the better.

The OP didn't say anything about 'competing online', but even if he had I'll give you an example that you are mistaken. An online friend of mine used to use pedals (for strafing) and two joysticks to play the Jedi Knight games online, and he was a damned fine player. He used what he preferred to use, and didn't need mouse/keyboard in order to do very well in multiplayer.

Fine, you adapted to using the keyboard in a different way. But by extension, why can you not accept that some people (not all) have adapted to using other controllers and can be just as good as a mouse/keyboard player, even in multiplayer?
I'm not suggesting that people should 'stick with what they know', but 'stick with what they like'. By all means, try out mouse/keyboard and any other controllers - and then stick with the control scheme that works best for you. I simply disagree with the notion that you can only do well in FPS with a mouse/keyboard, and that is especially true in single player. I used to use the MS Strategic Commander combined with a mouse in a lot of SP shooters just fine - but I'll admit that particular controller was not as well suited to fast-paced 'twitch' shooters (like Unreal Tournament, Serious Sam etc.), including some multiplayer games. It really depends on the type and pace of the game.
[QUOTE="mracoon"]What's the point on playing on PC if you're going to use a controller, it's so inferior to mouse in keyboard in most games.Qixote
Except for driving games and flight sims. Try playing MS Flight Sim without a controller and report back.
they make professional and casual joysticks for flight sims which are far superior to a controller. even 30$ saitek cyborg evo joysticks are a hundred times better than controllers for mfs. and when you have a HOTAS setup like an x52pro, theres no excuse to use a controller.

Joystick = controller, for the sake of this conversation. The point being, some games on the PC are indeed better without the keyboard and mouse.

wow..
you seriously think controllers are not only equivalent to K/M for FPS, but also equivalent to joystick/throttle for simulators???
wow... BrokenRabbit needs to be in this conversation..
remember we're not talking about ace combat 6 here, you brought up Flight Sim(04,X) in your argument. and dont they sell a HOTAS for ace combat 6 anyway? lmao

Your not keeping up with the point of this thread very well. You didn't even read my last post very well. I said FOR THE SAKE OF THIS CONVERSATION. What is this conversation about? Oh yeah, it's about using anything but a KB/M for PC games. Don't treat me like an idiot like I don't know the difference between a Joystick and a non-joystick game controller. Don't be a "captain obvious."
You guys are just twisting words and know exactly what I meant. Where I come from, "controllers" on the pc mean anything except KB/M.

thats BS, and yeah I'm starting to lose you because you're drifting off the topic anyway (the topic is about fps you brought up flgith sims, and i answered your offtopic argument). this topic compares M/K and controllers. i dont know what your definition of controller is and I dont care, to me and everyone else, its an x360 controller or equivalent, a peice of plastic with buttons and analog sticks.
from the OP: I have both, and was wondering what was best for shooters on the PC
I'm just answering the OP by saying KM is better. as for flight sims, controller is worse than even keyboard and mouse and it should be obvous to any pc gamer who is even remotely interested in the complexity of Flight Sim X that they should get a PC joystick isntead of playing like an 8year old kid with a controller trying to fly a 747-400 in a monsoon. controllers are not even made for flight sims. you can fly easier and more precisely with a mouse.

you're a smart one.
I was just wondering what everyone's preferences were on using a mouse or a PC controller. I have both, and was wondering what was best for shooters on the PC. Thanks.t8trg8tr
If you ever use a controller for pc shooters, you WILL get owned on multiplayer. Its basically a scientific fact.
