I got this GE wireless optical mouse over a month ago, and from the moment I plugged it in, the mouse wheel has acted wonky. Clicking it works fine, but no matter what program I'm using, any attempt to scroll fails miserably.

By "failing" I don't mean it doesn't scroll. I mean it doesn't scroll the way I want it to. If I try to scroll down a page, it might scroll down two notches, then decide to scroll up three, then back down one, then up two more, then back down four notches, then back up two, then down three again...

It's like my screen is having a seizure every time I try to scroll with the mouse wheel. Normally this isn't a huge issue, just a minor inconvenience, because I can grab and drag scroll bars manually. But since I'm playing Fable: TLC, it's becoming a huge issue that's severely hampering my play style.

Does anybody have any ideas that might help me fix this issue? Or is it just "sorry, your mouse is busted, live with it or buy a new one"?

Nobody can help? I know the issue isn't very interesting and doesn't involve talking PC specs for several pages, but I was really hoping this hardware forum could help me out.

It's only been about 4 hours... Anyway, it sounds like a driver issue. Could also be gunk stuck in the wheel or just be a cheap crappy mouse.

Check if it's dirty (like open it up and look). The scroll wheel typically works on a system that sends light from one side of the wheel, through the wheel and into a receiver on the other side and every time the wheel moves it blocks the light momentarily and tells it while way to go. There could be dirty or dog/cat hair (pet hair stops mine) which could be acting like a light break causing it to move. Theres also another kind of system that uses gears, so check the gears and everything that seems to be required for the scroll wheel to move. Another issue could be other users within a 30+ foot space around you, i've had issues with wireless devices clashing everytime either user used a wireless device. Like one client i had, had a wireless mouse/keyboard combo and his wife has a plain wireless mouse and everytime she moved her mouse his keyboard and mouse went sporadic and when she stopped his was fine again. Check batteries, check for any software that might be needed to install, clean it's insides, check for other users nearby, aside from that there probably isn't much more.

for the record, this is a problem that's been persistent since the moment i opened the package and plugged the receiver into the USB port. but i'll take a look at it and see if it needs to be cleaned. How can I check the driver? I'm pretty sure whatever software it came with was installed on the receiver itself, but i don't recall if my PC downloaded anything or not when I plugged it in.

I took the mouse apart and cleaned it, and put it back together, I turned off the mouse from the other computer, and even hunted down the software for this GE wireless optical mouse... still doing the same thing. And for the record, this isn't just every once in a while. I literally cannot use the mouse wheel because of this persistent problem.
