Hi. I just upgraded my gpu from Msi8800GTX to Sapphire HD4890 (overclock to 925/1050). I found out that certain games performances were reducedDRASTICALLY after the upgrade. Games like Crysis was very playable (rarely fall below 30fps on 8800) will nose dive to the fps 20s on 4890 frequently and lots of stutter. GTA4 also suffer similar performance degradation (lower minimum fps and stuttering a lot). Recently release of Fuel performed worse on 4890.Of course some games improves like World at war, Farcry 2, SF4...I just wonder if some of you who upgraded to 4890 from 8800gtx shares similiar performance degradations. Overall I think that minimum framerates on 8800GTX are higher and smoother than hd4890.(My cpu q6600 2.4Ghz and 4rams windows xp32bit) After the upgrade, I realised that 8800gtx is really a great card (smoother experience overall than 4890 on 1440*900res). (My theory is that games of a cpu intensive nature perform worse on 4890 than 8800gtx.)

But what is the point of upgrading to a supposedly more powerful cards only to downgrade graphics quality. Anyway for GTA4 and Crysis and Fuel, the graphical settings is the same for both cards with no aa or af enabled. The stuttering were annoying during the minimum framerates.

I'm a little bit of an nvidia fan boy and rarely have anything good to say about ATI, but I think you did something wrong. Did you use driver cleaner to remove your old drivers? I don't know your experience/knowledge level with this stuff but I'd take a walk through tweakguides.com and make sure you've done everything correctly.

Yeah, I have a friend with a GTX 260 another wtih a GTX 285. I have dual HD 4870's, I have a friend with an HD 4850x2. We all play a lot of the same games and we never really see a difference in the quality of gameplay other than slight differences in framerate.

as to be Driver / Os Issue to have performances lower then 8800GTX Because 8800GTx is weaker then 9800GTX+ and 250GTS 1GB is Better then 9800GTX+

According all Benchmark that are Trustworthy information : the spec of video card : the year : there no way it should perform any lower then 4870 1GB in any game and beside it concluding that a 4870 1GB is Weaker then 4890 in every aspect : and that 4870 1GB is a Rival of 260GTX 216 core & 280GTX

Conclusion ? how is that possible : i remember ad issue with my 4870x2 but iv solved them all my game seem to run at what they should run

The most noticeable gain from the upgrade is Farcry2. For 8800GTX I have to lower settings to medium low average about 42fps. But for 4890 settings almost maximum with avearge fps of 59. For SF4 benchmark, I went from C to A. I hope this is just a catalyst issue which can be improve over time or the upgrade will be unworthwhile. It is ridiculous how a last 2 generation card can noticeably outperform a 4890 in some aaa games.

aaa Game ? Beside that impossible.. i tell you.. 4890 should perform Better REGARDLESS OF game you may need to reformat / uninstall ATI CCC : reinstall ATI CCC and play with setting You'r just having a bad luck it as to be that..

in worst case call Sapphire tech support for RMA It or something it 100% impossible of 8800GTX have more performances then 4890 1GB regardless of game it like if you compare a Nitendo Wii To Xbox 360 on a HDTV

also try to post ur full-hardware : motherboard / CPU / ram / Powersupply this alone Should Help the Veteran in Hardware Troubleshooting that come occasionaly help people in trouble like you to have information to check up why it happening

I heard of Several case involving performances issue with ATI video card but they should all being solvable it quite logic that 8800GTx is inferrior in all point to HD4850 & higher so a 4890 1GB? big doubt .. u should say beside game you notice LOW FPS or something

It really odd to see a 8800GTX falling behind anything higher then ATI HD4850 : Because 8800GTX is Falling Behind 9800GTX+ and that is know that 4850 is either behind or higher then 9800GTX+ even old-benchmark seem to prove so

It doesn't, unless there's an issue with the card itself or your drivers, or something with your other hardware. What are your temps like? What's your psu? If you can't find a fix you could always try and get a replacement, it should still be under warrenty. The 4890 is a solid card, you SHOULD be seeing noticeable gains in every game.

Dude i have similar pc (q6600 4 gb ram,vista sp1 32bit)and recently upgraded from MSI 8800gt

i have the same problem mostly in gta4 which i haven't played since i installed the 4890!!!!

I think the problem in my pc is the psu which is 500w from ezcool (which sux) so im gonna buy corsair 750w or ocz600w at least !!!and

since my pc is a mess im gonna try format and install win7 64bit most of the 4890 owners had some boost in performance using win7.

Same problem here. I think that ATI cards just aren't that good in gaming, or maybe I have expected a miracle. Anyway, the FPS in some games has stayed the same over my 8800GT, in some increased, and in rare ones decreased. Maybe I have expected much, but really, that long time ago when I got 8800GT there wasn't a single game I couldn't max (even Crysis without AA, but because I had a small monitor for 1280x1024), and now when I bought 4890 I expected the same. I mean, in WIC the fps was pretty low on 8800, around 40-50. But it was CONSTANTLY that much. Turning up the AA to 16 resulted in no performance loss (I was stunned, although you could see a drop in fps when explosions hit). With 4890, when I started the game the fps was always above 200. But believe me, you would like to see 40 on 8800 much more than 200 on this card. First, there is a huge amount of microstuttering and the minimum fps is horrible. When I zoom in to xplosions I get like 6 fps. So I think you are not the only one unhappy with this card. But we all knew what we were buying, a mid ranged card from ATI that would probably cause tons of problems. I'll see if I'm getting a replacement (GTX 285) this week.

I uninstalled nvidia drivers, boot to safe mode and run driver sweeper, then installed catalyst 9.7. One issue though is that Nvidia ntune refuse to be removed and always startup whenever my computer is rebooted. My power supply is 530w.

There's nothing wrong with ATI cards. Sounds like a psu issue imo, as you only have 520w and Advil87 only has 500w. I wouldn't use anything lower than a solid 550w power supply for a card like the 4890.

Ntune? That could be your problem right there. I actually RMA'ed a motherboard once because of Ntune, it is a horrible program. Try what marc suggested, if that does not work reformat. I had to reformat to get rid of Ntune. I did not upgrade from my 8800 GTX to a 4890 cause the improvement was not justifiable to me, but there should be a noticeable increase in performance

well it because you don't play high-end game at 1920x1200 with everything high ch5richards :P so it why the 8800GTx To 4890 1GB isn't justifiable to you but maybe when 5870 Video card Release you may get interest to max out some game at this res with more then 30fps :D

but anyway we are so near of HD5870 & GTX 360 / 380 so when you got something as 8800GTX it sure not justifiable to switch before DX11 GPU as it so soon

But Yeah i heard of Ntunes a issue but actually Window install clean up utility should do the job else reformat OS But You really should post a complete List of ur hardware you have in current pc if possible it not hard if you made ur own pc

a little harder if it was pre-build Then upgrade Like what mobo / Cpu you utilise ? amd ? intel ? Nforce related ?
This could help to know if there any issue with bios / psu : tough i'm suprise you ad to rma a motherboard because of ntunes ch5Richards

I think I have resolve some of the low performances and stuttering problem. Previously when I run driver sweeper, it is under normal boot. But I learned that one has to boot into safemode to properly clean leftover drivers. Now after another driver sweeper under safe boot and clean install of catalyst 9.7 plus defragmentation, fps improves as I think it should be. For those unresolved games, deleting all the saved profiles and starting a new one seems to solvedmy fps problem. (taking cue from resolving flickering smokes in world at war after the upgrade by deleting all the saved profiles). Thanks everyone for theinput :)

Lucky you. Another question, do you have COD5? If anyone here has it and has similar specs as me, please confirm my story. If my 4890 is not performing as it should I will be happy to pull back all my bad words about ATI and get a replacement card. In COD5, the fps is above 100 most of the time, right? But try pointing to the fire. If your fps drops to under 30, then I have a good card and I'm just not happy with it. If, howewer, your fps is rock stable and doesn't drop below 50 then I guess I'll have to RMA the card or try a different manufacturer.

My COD5 fps never drop below 55 no matter where I point it, including fire.(fps 55 - 100)The HD4890 really show its power with this game and also Farcry 2.
