Disapointed? Yep, so were we. The 9800GTX doesnt, in any way, feel like a successor to the 8800GTX. When nVidia launched the 8800GTX, it just blew everything else away but the 9800GTX is more like the transition that AMD recently went though between their HD 2000 and HD 3000 series. There isnt really much of a performance improvement going from the 8800GTX to the 9800GTX and in some cases, the performance is worse because of the smaller frame buffer.

The price point of the 9800GTX isnt something thats beneficial to it either. Its selling for about $425 in the retail market for which you can either get an AMD 3870X2 or a couple of 8800GT cards and run them in SLI. As we saw in previous pages, both perform better than the 9800GTX. I know that with driver updates, we will see a bit of a performance improvement over time but I doubt that will be enough. At the moment, we cant recommend the 9800GTX- you can either go the 9800 GX2 route if you have a little extra to spend or the AMD Radeon 3870 X2 route if you want to stick to a single card setup.

I wouldn't say that.

Both NVIDIA and ATI have had their good share of great buys. e.g. 9700/9800 Pro, 6600 GT, 7600 GT, X1900 XT 256MB, 7900 GTO and X1950 Pro are a few that I can think of.

Well, that doesn't look too bright at all. Well, I think we all can agree that this "9*00" line should be called the "8900" line.

Worth noting is that the price can not be estimated by exchange rate.

Things will always differ in price from country to country.

lol let me know when your 8800gt can hit 19,200 on 3dmark06... and just about every review i've seen the x2 scores at the LEAST 20% higher in all games except maybe crysis. Which will change, I heard from a good source the 8.4 drivers will "even" the gap in performance between nvidia and ati in crysis.

don't get me wrong I'm not an ATI fanboy, I've got a 9800gx2 on the way just because it beats my current card. I also don't really favor this dual card solution but until either company comes out with their next gen (which looks like around Sept time frame) it'll have to do.

The price point of this card is going to make or break it. I've heard rumor of everything from $300-$450.

Me too. If the real price is 300~350$ then its going to be good purchase but if it stays on 450$ range then its adifferent story.

Anyway, we need to wait even after the offical release because all e-tailers will pump the prices just like in 8800GT days ..

3 things i disagree with this review.

#1 Not real-world results they are time-demos and built in bench's. Might sound biased but i like HadOCP's reviews because they actually run the game and use fraps/ other programs to record actual frame-rates to test the game.

#2 What brand is this card never heard of it before

#3. isn't the retail supposed to be 350 and ive seen some up on the net for 350 but they got taken down ( ZZF / Newegg) had them up for a day

Another thing if this card can oc to 850Mhz+ on the stock cooler this might make it more appealing also. Some say with great cooling it might hit 1Ghz on the core but who knows if that's true.

How long do you really think ATI will be on top with that X2? Not very long as that is normally how it goes. If they didn't have the X2 out. You would be keeping quiet. Fan boyism is getting old. But hey I could say the same about AMD and MSI. Not a fan of either. How about you go get a Intel Quad Core so you can unleash the true power of the X2.

Granted the X2 is a nice card. But it won't stay there for long.

so why the big difference between both reviews? this one seem more in line with the specs of the card. the other review shows it coming close to the 9800gx2...

one or the other review is total BS. both sites are either unheard of or untrusted. We will have to wait till the true reviews (after the realese) before we can get any solid evidence towards or against the 9 series.

Well, I have an 8800GT. So I was looking forward to upgrading it this year with a 9800GTX, but it looks like I'd be better off just getting another 8800GT and putting it in SLI with my other one ... ah well. For sure though, I'm not getting that monster of a 9800GX2. That thing freaks me out .

A month ago i was thinking of waiting for the 98 series to come before i do a new upgrade by my current card was throwing out too many artifacts for my taste so i went ahead and got the 88GT. Before i got the card i had seen a very early review that was unsubstanciated but definetly dashed most of my hopes and now im very happy with my purchase. For the first time im actually thinking SLI may not be such a stupid investment lol.

SSGWright

except that its a well known fact that 3dmark is pointless and doesnt reflect gaming performance in the least... so tell me, what do you get in crysis? If you don't know that, none of your posts have any merit.

EDIT: nvm, I googled it and found that two 3870 cards stuck together with super glue get 5 more frames in Crysis...  However, the card costs £100 more than mine, so for that money I'd rather stick with my humble overclocked GT.

You say that 3Dmark doesn't reflect real world performance, yet you use Crysis as the yardstick for performance?

I never realised that the entire PC game library consists of only one game--Crysis.

uh, ... it's the 9800gx2 that has two pcb's "superglued" together. Ati put two cores on one PCB. man, if your going to try and flame at least get your facts straight.

edit: and if you read a little more, you'd see that crysis was optimized for nvidia cards. Take a look at just about every other game benchmark.

You can play 3dmark all you want,we are happy playing real games.

And yes go play crysis with good performance after 6 months with better drivers.I have already played it 10 times and dont care whether ATI even beats nvidia in crysis now.Fact is that crysis truly fits nvidia the way it's meant to be played as crysis really was meant to be played with a nvidia card.

fine, once the benchies come up on tues, I will bet money this card won't even beat the ultra.

edit: I mentioned to you earlier there's an edit button, i'm sick of seeing your double, triple, and sometimes even quad posts, it's ridiculous.

your posts crack me up, i haven't seen a fanboy like you in a while LOL "I played crysis the way it's meant to be... with nvidia" ROFL

I play crysis very high avg 30fps beat it once, now it's boring... ok game but to you... lol it's great... why? because it's optimized by nvidia ROFL

[QUOTE="SSGWright"]HA, I didn't "make up threads" this thread was to show off a new 9800gtx review. The little extra about musa i added in the title was just to rattle em up a little :pTrooperManaic
and that's why these forums are falling apart. musa isn't wrong this time.

I've had my disagreements with Musa but I got to agree here. This thread was absolutely pointless. Those benchmarks are meaningless until they can be backed up or duplicated by a well-known site.

now your just attracting flamez. ATI 3870x2 is a great best bang for buck card. I would certainly trade my 8800GT for it but saying that ATI rulz which it clearly dosent is just nonsense. No I not a fanboy in the least, yes I owned many ati cards and they have had their run. But the fact still remains if you put SLI into that factor and you only want to spend $400-500 tops then a nvidia card would be a better bang for buck then that.. given you have a sli mobo.

Comming from a guy with an ATI icon that created a thread just to try to prove a point using some weak/non-existent proof.

What is wrong with his sig? I find it funny that someone could say that a card that beats the 8800 ultra, for cheaper, is a rip off.
