Not really. Sure, at today's 800MHz+ speeds DDR2 is faster, but when DDR2 used as system RAM was still in its infancy (400-533MHz), plain old DDR at 400MHz was actually faster. Even 667MHz DDR2 couldn't completely outrun DDR400 (more of a tie). The problem is that DDR2 has a higher latency than DDR1.

Just because DDR2 scored much higher on the synthetic benchmarks didn't mean that it was better. That's why AMD didn't hop onto the DDR2 bandwagon until 667-800MHz DDR2 memory was common.

yeah, they do.  the following are my "vista performance scores"

processor - 4.4

ram - 4.3

graphics - 5.9

gaming graphics - 5.8

primary hard disk - 5.5

this is a bit of an exaggeration.  i built this machine around October 2003... so about 3 and a half years ago.  this particular p4 was top of the line then.  the p4 "extreme edition" came out soon after

just a buy another gig of ram. that cpu you should still be fine for another couple of months, and then prices will be even cheaper. At the moment a cpu and ram upgrade for you isnt even completely necessary.

Making the cables look all nice is my favorite part of building a computer.you gotta find all these wierd spots to connect ties too.

man your pc is just fine as long as u have ht it will help u alot, and there is nothing with this pc that cant run company of heroes on med~high, maybe the processor a little bit, but for oblivion, ur fine for sure.

probably upgrade to 2GB ddr pc4000 (best my mobo can handle).  i looked up socket 478 cpus and there is nothing out there that's faster than what i have, so that'll be it for this machine

Why are some people on here so harsh? Not everyone can afford to upgrade their rig every couple of months you know.

I've had the PC in my sig for about 3 months now, and even though the graphics card is outdated i don't NEED to upgrade it. Whats the point? I have other things to spend my money on.

Ghz ratings have become largely irrelevant. Especially with overclocking so even lower clocked CPUs can get up to around the same Hz rating as higher clocked ones.

Computers are expensive yeah, but wow...yes, I recommend you upgrade that GPU in your sig, although I will say the 8500GT is far from recommendable at this point unless you are just looking for a card under $100.

The 8500GT won't really give good performance in games. An 8600GTS is the best mid-range at the moment.
