Hey, I had a mate over a few days ago that wanted to try out my HD4890/C2D E8500 rig. After trying some of my more demanding games ( such as Crysis, Far Cry 2, and STALKER: Clear sky for instance. ) he said that my rig was performing poorly for a 4800/C2D setup and that his 8800 series card rig performed better. I showed him some web benchmarks but he said that all of those were inaccurate and I shouldn't rely on them. Stuff he reacted heavily on was that I sometimes dropped down below 60 FPS in L4D ( during finale hordes mostly. ), Generally poor performance in Crysis, Far Cry 2, Empire: Total War and the World in Conflict: Soviet Assault benchmark tool.

So I turn to you guys (again) for help. :) Is he right about my rig doing worse than it should be or is he just being an idiot that doesn't know what he is talking about?

Full details on my rig:

XFX ATI Radeon HD4890 1GB [stock]

C2D E8500 3,16GHz [stock]

4GB 800MHz RAM

Vista Home Premium 64 bit

My benchmark results in games that has an integrated benchmark tool:

3dmark06 with everything set to default: 14510

FarCry 2 "Short Range" Benchmark w. everything set to Ultra DX10 8x AA 1680x1050 Resolution result: 35.42

Crysis "gpu_benchmark" w. everything set to Very High DX10 8x AA 1680x1050 Resolution result: 31.40

World in Conflict integrated benchmark w. everything set to maximum DX10 ( except for Extra Debris on Explosions because that setting bugs my game. ) with 4x AA and 16x AF 1680x1050 Resolution result: 38

The Last Remnant free benchmark w. default settings ( everything's set to maximum automaticly ) 1680x1050 Resolution Fullscreen result: 100.30

Street Fighter IV free benchmark w. everything set to maximum with 8x AA and 16x AF 1680x1050 Resolution Result: 102.98

HAWX integrated benchmark w. everything set to maximum ( including DX10 settings. ) with 8x AA 1680x1050 Resolution result: 62

630W PSU... Not sure who the manufacturer is but 630W should be enough.

And yeah, he's running DX9. No vista. ( He uses the Ultra High mod for Crysis though which makes the game look like Very High. )

I just did a bench with crysis at those settings and I got 23-24 average fps. This is with a GTX 260, so your result of 31 seems right.

Your 3DMark06 score seems a bit low for your setup, but I've never used it to benchmark an ATI card...

Hi Did you know that you can't force AA and AF on

3D Mark 06 with an ATI card. If you have these settings

on your score will be lower. You have to check "Let

Application Decide" if you want an accurate test.

I'm not forcing anything in the driver. All settings are in-game and in the 3dmark06 run everything was on default. ( I can't change any settings because I'm using the trial. )

Btw, the guy that wanted the benchmark results of DX9:

Run #1- DX9 1680x1050 AA=8x, 64 bit test, Quality: VeryHigh ~~ Overall Average FPS: 2892

Run #1- DX10 1680x1050 AA=8x, 64 bit test, Quality: VeryHigh ~~ Overall Average FPS: 3140

I'm suspecting something might be wrong with Crysis though. Considering a reinstall.

Your friend is filling you full of it. Go see his PC in action, I guarantee yours will spank it. I have a friend like that too. If I drove a ferrari, his chevy s-10 would still be 'slightly faster' and a bigger chick magnet. Some people just can't accept the fact that they dont always have the best.

Going to tell him to download the Crysis Benchmark and run it on the same settings at me.

BTW: Has anyone checked my 3dmark06 scores? Are they okay?

Still wanting someone to take a look at my 3dmark06 score and tell me if it's correct. If you can't be arsed to read the first post here it is again: 14510 with everything set to default.

I agree. Your setup is great. His isn't magically going to perform better. Certainly having an Nvidia card can be an advantage but nothing spectacular, and only minimally, mostly for physics.

How is having a 8800gt an advantage over a 4890? Nvidia cards don't have an advantage in physics just games that use physx.
