Well, duh. Why would you come on a forum to ask that, haha? It's not like it would hurt or take much extra time to take the safe route and un-install it just in case.

Download the latest drivers for ATI (Catalyst 9.12) and Uninstall the Nvidia drivers & restart your PC (in safe mode). Run Driver Sweeper (or similar program) to remove any leftover files from the Nvidia display drivers. Then shutdown the PC & unplug power. Install the ATI 5870 and then turn on the PC. Install the downloaded ATI drivers and restart. You are now ready to go with the new system. Do Not Use The Drivers On The CD (they are outdated).

i would disagree with these statements... idk maybe my motherboard is just absurdly smart, but.... when my computer was making a clicking noise to check if it was the graphics card i popped out my 8800GTS and popped in an x1600, it booted up to desktop totally normal as if nothing had changed at all. maybe windows 7 is smart? it did take a bit longer than usual to boot.

to be even safer, use Driver Sweeper to completely remove your Nvidia drivers. nice to have that program on your computer when installing updates.
