Unless you're a graphic designer, drop down to:

Intel Core i5 2500K - The only different between 2600K and 2500K is the amount of threads per core. Essentially, the 2600k can handle more tasks at once, but the processing power is the same.

4-8 GB - any more than 8GB is a complete waste and can actually slow your system down

Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler - Don't go cheap on liquid cooling. If you're going to use a closed loop system, I'd recommend the H100 ($120) otherwise stick to air coolers.

HD6970 or GTX 570 - If you're going to go highend you either get one of these, and if you want more power, you put them in SLI/Crossfire. The GTX 580 scales horribly in SLI and the 590 is inferior and costs more than the HD6990. Keep in mind, a single HD6970/570 will max out every single game out and probably til the next year. Getting anything more than that is strictly E-peen/benchmarks.

Motherboard: way to expensive for unecessary features. Get a ASRock P67 EXTREME4 or a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 ($150) Unless you're doing SLI x3 or Tri-fire you should never have to spend more than $200 on a Mobo

Critic, looks awesome!!! Morgofborg. I see the motherboard you have recommended, but do you think an am3+ would be better because of the new socket sizes? Thoughts...

Well you could go with a AM3+ mobo if you want too, but you understand that that means you will need an AMD cpu, right? Also, although that will set you up for bulldozer, if you plan on buying now you will need a current cpu for the mean time, so that means selling it once bulldozer is released in a month. Plus honestly, with the budget you have there is no reason to not get a 2500k IF you plan on buying NOW. If you are still waiting a month or 2, maybe an AM3+ socket is something to consider. its up to you...

Bulldozer is projected to match the 2600K in performance and future iterations of the design will use the FM3 socket.

So there's no futuerproofing in AM3+ so why shell out an extra 2 months for a processor that's may or may not be better than the 2600k...
