I just bought a new GPU fan to replace the stock one on my 4870 ATI, so I removed the thermal paste, put a load of new stuff on, threw it in the PC and it over heated within a few minutes, then I went and put the old stock fan back on and I get the same thing :(. I think I know what the pronblem is though, do I have to put a lot of thermal paste on and then leave it for a while? It was definatly over heating on boot up, so I have put a lot more paste on the GPU now and put it back together, should I leave it a while for the new paste to set?

Any input on this, just found that I have to leave it for 24 hours for the paste to set in place lol. Put I am hoping that I did no permanent damage to the card, there was some artifacting on the screen which is worrying but I dunno, will have to wait till tomorrow and see what happens, shouldnt have killed it though, must have been the heat causing the artifacts.

I don't know a lot about this subject, but I do know you have to let that paste set for a while. To be safe, let it set for at least a whole day.

Hopefully someone can tell you more, sorry.

The card should be fine, a one off overheating isnt anything to worry about.

Thanks for the input, I left the card with fresh paste on and the new coole for an hour, fired the comp up and the temp as dropped thankfully but is rising all the time so I need to leave the paste longer, looks like I got away with it :P
