It's an awful GPU that needs to be replaced, but I don't know what to buy. I don't know which GPU's are compatible with this PC. It's a 5(?) year old Compaq Presario. I'm also not sure if it is safe to replace the GPU if it's pre built. I'll check out which PSU I have tomorrow because I'm too tired to open it up and look. I also don't have a clue what my mobo is. I'll look into it tommorow.

Specs:

Athlon 64 3400+ 2.41ghz

1gb RAM

Also, use Newegg.ca for links and not Newegg.com.

Thanks in advance :)

Your options are pretty limited since i think that is a PCI card. I think there is a 7 series PCI card but if you do find one the cost is crazy compared to even a low budget PCI express card that is many times faster. You'd be better off checking tigerdirect and getting a good barebones if you can.

Honestly im not sure on how good the performance would be but im sure it would be several steps up from your current card. Im not even sure if your current card is DX9 lol. If your keen on staying with PCI then im not sure you can do better. Not sure what games you intend to try and play on this card either.

Red Alert 3, Age of Empires 3 ect. Not ones that require the best graphics cards. But I can only play AoE3 on lowest settings, and Red Alert 3 is unplayable. And yeah it is DX9 and PCI. From what I remember it didn't even look like it had any type of cooling :D

Wow, a compaq presario..... But yeah that card sounds good, but your computer's mobo is so old it might still have the first pci..... uhh you are VERY limited to any new games with just pci. Right now I am using a geforce 9200 GS (its the pci express 2.0) and I can hardly play newer games on the lowest settings (im waiting for a new psu so I can install my geforce gtx 275 OC!!! w00t) anyway, I would look into a new motherboard. Something with a pci express 2.0 and a compatible psu, and throw in plenty of RAM if you got the cash (I would get another GB just for the hell of it). With the new pci express slot and at least a 500 W psu or maybe less if you dare, Id say you could install that decent graphics card and get the ball rolling.

If it's pci forget it. The difference between pci and pci e or agp graphics cards is huge. Regardless if they are the same model, pci graphics cards are not meant for ANY current games.

haha yeah I remember when my parents bought me a computer...they bought like this clearance piece of **** local brand....oh my god i dont even wanna go there..... but you would be surprised how easy and money saving it can be to build your own computer. Im gonna start building one soon..... and yes, if you upgrade to pci express you would at least need a 500w for a decent graphics card.....but if you just get a more basic, less expensive card i think you will be fine. In fact, most all cards below like 200 dollars dont require the psu connectors sorry I mislead you there haha..... and about the sims 3.....you need at least a geforce fx 5900 card. MINIMUM. and that card is compatible with the pci slot. so I would start there and check out your options for decent cards there, they are NOT going to be expensive at all lol. make sure they fit your pci. and screw the 500W thing, actually.

I think PCI would actually work for the Sims 3. But thats pushing the limit you are very right. Gamers right now need at least a pci express to play current games.

you wont like what i have to say b/c it will be nothing anyone else here would call "good" you see if you read my blog i discuss a little known powerhouse card called the hd 2400 pro which comes in pci agp and pci-e

it wont do alot but what it can do it does well here are its limits see it for yourself:

dawn of war 2: lowest playable fps (30+) physics off

oblivion: low playable fps bad resolution

rainbow 6: vegas plabale fps on medium bad resolution

its not that bad and its certainly a HUGE step up from a card that barely will churn out guildwars but its far from gaming worthy but it will handle some newer ames like arkham asylum on medium which is always a + and it will do red alert 3 on high too.

and odds are you wont need a new psu for it either

a friend of mine had your same predicament i simply gave him my hand me down parts from an old pentium D rig i had. but that or the 8400gs (preforms exactly the same) would have been his only options.

it neds a 250watt psu minimum which makes it great for those stuck in these awkard spots in an upgrade like this.

i warned it was going to be nothing "good"

atm you cant even handle half life 2 or portal at least this will let you do that.

This is good. I would say not to buy a whole new PSU, just a low power-consuming gpu. You better save money and later u can buy a new PC. I hope you have at least 300W!

According to THIS the HD 3650 needs a 450W PSU. Seems pretty high if you ask me.

It should be fine, I replaced the psu in my compaq presario with a corsair TX850 with no problems. you just need to find one that fits in your computer.
If you are replacing your psu you could then look at a more powerful agp card. I would recommend something like the Radeon HD 3850. I have the 3850 and find it to be a brilliant card.

That x1650 should definitely run without problem on your PSU. There is no need to upgrade your psu. I had a hd3850 running on 300w without problems, so that card should run fine :) First check if it can run Sims 3!

With those specs, I'd say just go for a new system entirely, or upgrade as much as you can. An 8800 GT is cheap and can pull it's weight in most 3d applications, the AMD 6000+ is only about $60, and you can get a crapload of other half-assed components (newer/bigger case w/PSU, mATX mobo, 2 gb DDR2 RAM) for a total of maybe...another $140 on top of that (on Newegg, that is).

That's good because you can get a decent AGP card like the ATI 3850. Don't get anything less than that as you will be disappointed. My old system had a X1950pro and that even struggled with the Sims2.

Yea, someone earlier in the thread just assumed it was PCI but I figured it was worth pointing out that the AGP 5200 is more common than the PCI.
