Ok, so im playing and loving the game immensely...but im just starting to get my a ss kicked, nykesha is just dead instantly...and it seems my dudes just get rolled, im a bit new to the neverwinter scene so im not so used to the pure D&D style overall.

Im doing that bandits quest, and i got the dwarf, nykesha and myself...and my main char is a paladin but i dont understand the spellcasting in this game to heal during combat, i mean i understand the turn based factor as to thats my favorite style of rpg gaming, but spells i dont quite get...can i buff my team? I see this list of spells but i cant do anything with them in my spell book. I cast a heal once for like 20 hps and then it seems its done, what am i missing here?

Also, is it worth while to buy store bought weapons and armors?

And why does my paladin get like 2 points to distribute yet the thief char gets like 13 or something, im not getting that quite yet.

Any help would be great.

The DnD ruleset isn't too friendly if you are new, i would suggest doing the tutorial if you haven't but i'll try to explain a bit.

Well the spellcasting is different depending on what the character is. As a general rule of thumb, use F (i think it's that) to bring out the quick casting mode (not the same as the spellbook), you should have some kind of spell list to the left of your screen assuming the character can cast spells. You can only use a spell a few times per day depending on the spellcasting setup your character use (either innate or memorize).

Wizards, clerics, druids, rangers and paladins need to memorize their spells before casting so you need to organize and adjust the spells in the spellbook. They can use any spell assuming (in the wizard case) that you have learnt from proper scrolls or choose at level up. Divine casters that need to memorize have full access to any spell of their level right away. Memorize a spell a few times to be able to cast it additional times per day.

Sorcerers, Favored souls, Spirit shamans and bards have innate spellcasting and do not need any memorizing. This mean they can cast any spell they have at any time, the downside is that they have limited selection of spells that need to be made upon level up. Unlike the memorizing casters, the innate spellcasters have a number of spells per level available and can cast any spell in their arsenal.

You can buff your team with the right spells yes.

As far as points goes, it depends on what your character is. It's part of DnD ruleset again. Rogues get access to more skills and will receive more points while fighters have a smaller pool of skills and receive less points. Your intelligence bonus also gives you additional points, you can check it out in your character stats, next to your intel number there should be a +X or a -X (X= a number). If you have a positive bonus, you gain that number in extra skills meaning a character with 12 intelligence having a intel bonus of +1 will have 3 points instead of the normal 2 for a 10 intel character. Every even number affect the bonus, meaning you need to increase the stat by 2 to gain +1 at the bonus.

As far as getting owned, you need to increase your armor if you die easily or change your tactics. Buy new weapons and armors if you have trouble, they are worthwhile, buy potions to help you out or switch your team around. A good tip here is to have a tank, usually a front line character that can use heavy armor and shields such as the dwarf or your paladin. A fighter with a full plate mail and a tower shield should be durable enough to soak damage while the rest of your team deal damage. Neeshka is a rogue, this mean she can sneak attack, just place her behind an opponent and her damage should go up quite a bit.

Hope this help a bit.

Edit: i forgot to add this. Look at your feats in the character screen, some feats can be dragged down on the bar to be used. For example, Neeshka has racial abitilies which can be used. By default they appear on the bar but if you receive new abilities, you need to place them yourself. There is also the Modes which can be used. Like the Quick cast, it can be brought up by pressing a key or going through the menu. It appears by default on the lower right of your screen. You can use those to help you out. Test them out and see what works, usually those modes have both advantages and drawbacks.

Alright here comes a pretty long explanation. Your spellbook contains spells you can cast. You fill the slots with the spells you want to cast and you have to rest to regain usage of them. Think of it as, "casting spells tire me out. I can cast some low level spells and some high level spells before i get exhausted and can't cast them anymore." For paladins, the level of spells you can cast is affected by your WISDOM attribute, and your character's paladin level. You can buff your team but generally Clerics have the buffing spells. Your paladin has buffs for himself only and some charisma-based feats, but that's about it. You can drag the activatable feats from your character window (press 'C' and click the feats tab, IIRC) to your quick action slots. Store-bought weapons and armor are generally crap unless they have the enchantments, which in general is a simple +1, +2, up to +5. Some store items are really good, but you have to understand the combat system first. A weapon's damage is written in the format xdy, which is x rolls of a y-sided die. For example, 1d6 means the weapon will randomly do 1-6 damage on a successful attack. 2d4 means it will do 1-4 damage, twice, in a single attack. Stronger weapons, like the Holy Avenger (for paladins only!) do 1d12+5, which is 1-12 damage, +5. If you come from the WoW or Diablo crowd that 17 damage may not seem much, but seeing as most characters have an average HP pool of 120-150, that's a pretty big chunk. Those skill points, as to why a paladin gets only 2 and your rogue Neeshka gets 13+, is because of their class. Different classes get different amounts of skill points. This is also modified by your INTELLIGENCE modifier, which is your INT score - 10, multiplied by 2 IIRC. Don't feel bummed that the paladin gets less skill points, he gets higher attack bonuses and more special feats than the rogue does when he levels. Think of rogues as Jack-of-all-trades characters, that can lockpick, pickpocket, sneak and backstab though they are pretty squishy. Paladins are frontline fighters with tons of hitpoints, some spells and buffs and access to the Holy Avenger, which always scores style points! If you have any more questions feel free to PM me. I hope this helps.

Haha somebody types faster than I do. But it looks like I got most of it right. I'm still a little confused because my tabletop roleplaying group shifted to 4th edition DND recently and the rules have almost completely changed.

Wow thanks for the info guys, helps alot! Please any more you can offer do so :)

Before i get too deep into the game, how about classes...are Pallies a fun and rewarding class to play? Or what about a caster class or ranger? Also...how well do classes mix, or is it best to roll and go with a pure class?

Well Paladins can wear heavy armor and shields, they've got some spellcasting, Divine armor and Divine strength as feats, they can turn undead (which instantly kills them when you're high enough level) and they've got a saving throw bonus based on CHARISMA. They're the typical knight in shining armor type. Plus the Holy Avenger weapon is exclusive to their class. Clerics are a good choice because they can wear armor and cast spells at the same time, unlike mages. They've got better casting than paladins, and they can turn undead better than paladins. They can also summon demons and they have the best buffs in the game. But paladins are stronger as frontliners. Rangers can either be two-weapon fighters or archers. I recommend two-weapon fighting if you roll a ranger though, because there's a shortage of good bows in the NWN2 Original Campaign. They can wear medium armor, they can sneak, they've got limited spellcasting and a pet. Multiclassing is good if you're going into a prestige class (which is a class that you can get only after you've met some requirements) Your paladin could look to become a Divine Champion. There are some multiclassing strategies which you should only attempt when you've got a better grasp of the DnD ruleset. The key point in DnD games is making a character you enjoy playing. My first NWN2 character was an Eldritch Knight, basically a fighter/mage hybrid, with spells that did AoE damage around the caster so I could go into melee (not well, mind you) and start casting things when things get rough.

Cool thanks for the info :) yea i know alot of the general stuff, it was just the actual technicalities of certain spellcasting abilities and what not i wasnt sure about in the game. Ive played so many rpgs in my time now and just love them to death, and i normally roll warrior types...i just was curious what classes really turn out in the game. I love the sound of a ranger in the game as a dual wielder, ill have to try that. Other question...is there anyway to control my computer Ai so that they dont just go dashing off into a crowd of mobs, with my pally i want to lead the charge in being the tank but my rogue will just strut lol...how can i set it up to have them only attack what i attack?

NWN2 AI is not too bright, specifically allied NPCs. I recommend queing specific attacks; for example, as a sorcereress, I would cast a fireball or something while telling my warrior friend to go attack and having Nieshka chill in the back and shoot arrows (I only brought Nieshka along because she was fun to talk to, cute half-demon chick, and a locksmith).

As for healing spells, make sure its not like a fourth move in a que of five moves.

What are some classes you guys like?

Also, with a ranger...is it viable to pull with your bow and then switch over to melee? But is there a way to hotkey different attack modes?

My favorite class are mage/fighter hybrids, like Eldritch Knights and Battle Clerics (Warpriest, i think was the name of the class). Rangers can shoot and move into melee when the enemies get close, that'll work. Only, if your ranger focuses on archery the enemies will rarely get close. XD To switch between combat modes you can drag the weapon to your hotbar. You can also drag a shield and weapon or two weapons in a single hotbar space.
