I need a bit of help in terms of proper order to go in. My last GPU, 8800GT, died on me so I had ordered a 6850 as well as Windows 7. I'm unsure of what the proper order of installations and steps I have to take. I obviously want to back up stuff on my computer, but with the 8800GT Windows XP won't load. Do I install the 6850 first, back up everything, and then install Windows 7?

Install the 6850. Run the Windows 7 intaller disk. It will detect that you have Windows XP installed on the disk and move everything to a folder called "Windows.old" as a backup for you. Windows.old will contain your old "Windows" folder, "Program Files" folder and "Documents and Settings" folder, that includes your My Documents, My Pictures, My Videos etc... folders. If you have folders beyond that you wish to backup you will need another means to do it. That'll mean booting into Windows XP under safe mode or using another operating system such as a Linux live disk.

I've never installed a GPU before, I understand the hardware side of it, but in terms of drivers and what not I'm a bit clueless. If I install it and then turn on the computer will it load up everything properly? Do I have to go into safe mode to remove old 8800 drivers first?

remove old drivers, go on the amd website, select install drivers, click on the ones for your card, download the drivers, simple or just buy an alienware etc

Will the new drivers install properly if done through safe mode? Also should I be booting up into safe mode with my 8800 (this still works) or the 6850?

If you're just going to be recovering files don't even worry about drivers, just install the HD 6850 and boot into safe mode and grab the files you need from safe mode and then when you have them all move on to installing Windows 7. In the case of a clean install in Windows 7, you will get basic display without a driver at all. Go to game.amd.com and download the latest drivers and run the installer. Simple as that.

Dont have to install the drivers of the 6850, just need the card in there, when you install windows 7 that is when you install the 6850 drivers.

If I understand correctly, this is how it should go:

1. Install 6850 hardware
2. Boot into safe mode
3. Back up files onto portable harddrive
4. Restart computer and let it boot normally into Windows XP
5. Insert Windows 7 install disc
6. Install 6850 drivers after Windows 7 finishes installation
8. Restore backed up content from portable harddrive

Correct?

EDIT: I was also suggested this order;

1. Install 6850 hardware
2. Boot into Safe Mode
3. Remove 8800 drivers with drive sweeper
4. Boot in Windows XP normally
5. Install 6850 drivers
6. Back up file onto portable hdd
7. Install Windows 7

Go with your first order, but after you are done backing up your stuff from safe mode don't boot back into XP, just boot from the Windows 7 disk itself. You can do this by launching the boot manager when your computer starts up or editing the boot priority in the BIOS to boot from your DVD drive. Then once Windows 7 is installed then you can install the new drivers for the HD 6850. That second list will just make you do a bunch of driver work to XP, but you're getting rid of XP anyway so why do that.

EDIT: In short, you don't need to go back into XP to install 7.

The person that suggested the 2nd order was an idiot troll

How do I access the boot manager?

Depends on your motherboard. The initial boot screen tells you what key to press during post. This usually then lets you select which device to boot from.
