No.. If it runs fine on a E8400, there's no way a i7 can't handle it. Therefore your whole statement about how some "people" with quad core are struggling with the game is complete bogus.

And why would you think a 4450e wouldn't bottleneck it? My CPU is pretty subpar as it is, so what do you suppose that would make yours?

No, most people tend to go overboard when talking about bottlenecking. Running the hardware is different from what the game wants or needs. And your cpu is more then enough for both. Do you have any other games besides Steam(Source) based games? You to try other games and see if happens in them too.

Most people tend to overestimate low end duo cores.

Look under L4D chart. 70 fps avg, exactly what you're getting. Ofc there would be a huge fps drop in heavy action, because there's more activity. The reason its so low into the 10s-20s because your CPU just can't handle that much activity.

Exactly my point. You can render the graphics because of your 4890, but you can't handle the increased activity because of the crappy CPU.

No, 55C is a great load temp.

I have the same problem here. I have an MSI 4890 OC, 2x2GB DDR2, AMD Phenom X4 @3ghz 95w, 700W OCZ PSU. On max settings and 1680x1050 res, (no hdr, i hate it) I get 85-95 fps. I tried playing this game on my other rig, using an e6550 Dual core and 9600gt on 1280x800 max settings, I get 100+ fps max. I can also play Borderlands on my 4890, which can play max settins 1680x1050 with barely noticeable lag, which fits the descriptions of the 4890 benchmarks I found online. So I don't think it's the CPU or PSU that's causing the problem. Anyone else have an idea?

What I would do is get D3doverrider, which comes with rivatuner. Slap on force triple buffer and force vsync. Put vsync on in CCC, and also in-game - And then see what happens.

Yeah me too. When I first got my 8800 GTX, my generic 500 watt power supply could not handle it. Playing games was slow as hell and sometimes it even froze. I changed my PS to ANTEC 700w, and all was right with the world. I still use this card to this day. Good card, play every games on very high setting, except Crysis.

Guys the frames are dropping when there is heavy action. I REPEAT HIS FRAMES ARE DROPPING WHEN THERE IS HEAVY ACTION! It is more than likely he was on a heavily populated server and the manure was hitting the fan (30+ people on screen at once) when his frames went to Hell. Anyone who has played WoW can attest to frame drops when you go to a heavily populated area, despite WoW being a 5-year-old game.

So my advice is, this is normal. Think of it this way, your GPU and CPU are working together, in tandem with your NIC card to make everything run as smoothly as possible. So what we have is your GPU trying to render a lot of people running around, explosions, bodies being torn apart, all the good stuff all at once. Meanwhile your NIC card is working in tandem with whatever ping rates you were getting (I know, doesnt have a whole lot to do with frames, but I am trying to emphasize a lot of crap is going on at once) making sense out of all the various bits and bytes of peoples commands happening at the same time. While these two things are working together, your at least 2-year-old lower-end CPU is pulling a hernia trying to keep up with the GPU and network.

This stuff happens. It will all be cool.

Well, I solved this problem. What I did was open task manager and set affinity of hl2.exe to 1 cpu. Frames shot up to 220 avg on max settings 1680x1050 video stress test. Not a problem on my dual core for some reason.

I know that AMD's dual cores from the Athlon series always seemed to have timing issues in certain games/applications. Thus causing performance to be hindered or for things to run in a "fast forward" mode - where everything ran at 2x the normal speed.

You might want to look here and see about downloading the dual core optimizer - though this is entirely up to you. The optimizer made a world of difference in keeping my games running correctlywhen I had my AMD 64 X2 5600+.

It's good to hear you figured out the problem though. I personally found it to be a pain to try and set the affinity for certain games everytime I launched them.

I just read your post about lowering the settings and it still ran bad. my friend had that problem and he had a crappy PSU like yours no offence. Never ever skimp on the PSU.

A bad/underpowered PSU will not cause components to slow down.....

I'm willing to bet that the CPU is to blame, considering that my GX630 (laptop) has very similar symptoms regardless of the detail settings.

You could try overclocking your chip and see if that boosts the framerate somewhat. Either from that, I can't think of a solution other than buying a better CPU :?

Uh yes it can, it happened wiht my previous PSU. I had a 550w that died and gaming was relatively fine, used a 350w generic backup and all my games ran slow as hell. Load times were longer too.
