I am looking to upgrade my system, and I am wondering whether to go with a new quad core amd proc ( I currently have an amd mobo) or to get another 9600 gt and sli them.

get a aftermarket cooler and overclock your black edition processor then get another 9600gt

Overclock it, then sell your 9600gt and get a GTX260/285/HD4850/4870.

I second that, 9600gt's in sli is just a waste.

I actually heard that a pair of 9600 gts arequite good in sli, plus i dont have more than 200 to spend and im not planning on gaming over 1680 by 1050

Then a GTX260 is right up your alley, slap whoever told you to go SLI.

and if you do get a phenom 2 get the 940 it wil give a pretty big gain in performance especially if you overclock it, that is if your board has the SB750 southbridge if not dont bother until you get a new board
