A quote from Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson in this article.
http://www.videogamer.com/news/16-09-2008-9349.html

But the thing that caught my eye was:
"Blizzard has already confirmed that no other playable characters from Diablo or Diablo II will make it into the third game".

So appart from the Barbarian, all the other playable characters will be original.
Now you got me exited!

What could they be?!!

Your thoughts?

Yeah, I frankly expect all - or most - of Diablo 3's cIasses to be variants or hybrids of previous Diablo cIasses. The Witch Doctor looks, from what I've seen, like a Necromancer/Druid hybrid. hardly a "brand new" cIass.

I think nutcrackr is right, the next cIass (or at least one of the cIasses in the game) will be some form of holy knight. Either a Paladin variant or a Cleric of some form.

Do you think there could be a "Fanboy" class?

His main attacking weapon is to fling unfinished game discs at his enemies, hurling both insults at his nemesis and the game itself!

His secondary ability and arguably the more powerful is to use his grand intelligence to trick and confuse his enemies!

"Xbox is better than Crysis!".

"Mario invented the moustache".

A class inspired solely by Duke Nukem would be pretty cool...

Though hard to work into the lore, I gues...

Exactly, "New" class doesn't really mean much. Just look at Diablo 2. Was the Amazon really "New" compared to the Rogue from the first one? It will be the same thing. Similar classes, with slight variations. That being said, I can't wait for this game.

frank klepka(C&C-and C&CRA)

and sonic mayhem (quake 2 and 3, along with hellgate london.)

What? Nooooooo!

I hope they will come up with some real NEW classes and not some hybrids like the witch doctor is. I mean a god damn witch doctor? Both necromancer and druid were much cooler.

My guess is that it is going to be a replica of one of the old D2 classes, with some minor twists, a new name, and some different skin slapped onto it. And this is going to make us go, "why the hell didn't you guys just bring over the _______ to Diablo 3? You did that with the Barbarian."

Either that or it is going to be something really out of place, like a time traveler with rocket launchers or a Tauren from the Warcraft universe.

Only two classes were carried over from the first Diablo: The Warrior (Barb) and the Sorcerer (Sorceress). I don't want to see the same classes, I want all new.

Well, they have said there will be 5 classes in the game, which to me is kind of bullcrap since that just says to me they are deliberately holding some off for the inevitable expansion, but whatever.

So, I'm thinking they will have to have the big melee guy (which they already revealed), an elemental magic user, someone who uses ranged weapons (likely bows of course), and two others, and we already know what one of the others is.

I will not be all that surprised if the next reveal is an amazon type class, but what would be really funny is if it was a paladin-like class and they called it "death knight." :P

The witch doctor does a lot of what the necromancer did. The problem with the necromancer was that going with skills that utilized corpses was worthless against bosses. That was always my annoyance with that class and I'm quite glad they changed it actually.

VoodooGamer

There are only so many types of abilities you can have in a dungeon crawler. There's some line somewhere where being "innovative" means making things convoluted just for the sake of being different, and I don't think anyone really wants that either.

I played the Mythos beta and it was quite clear that the classes in that game were heavily inspired by combinations of Diablo 2 classes (which isn't very surprising since one of the most prominent figures behind Diablo 2 ran the company). That game, despite being a beta and not being up to the level of polish one would expect from a Blizzard game, had clearly refined a lot of that sort of gameplay though. For one thing, you didn't feel like you were making your character "wrong" if you put more than one point into low level skills, which is something I assume Diablo 3 will also fix. Another cool thing was how they had a different kind of mix of skills. For example, the bloodletter class had skills that were melee enhancing, but then also had some skills that were basically like paladin auras, and then on top of that had corpse utilizing skills that were similar to Diablo II's necromancer. You couldn't really go the route of doing all of them of course.

Just because its a similar archetype doesn't mean its going to feel the same. With the new physics and technology all the attacks will be so much more cool and amazing. Look at the barbarian in the demo video and attack demonstrations on the website for example. His new attacks and old are just so much more sensational compared to the old diablo games. The action in this game has been amped and I can't wait to hear more details on the RPG elements.

That probably means it's not going to be very diablo-lore-like. My guess it's "similar" to the amazon class, but more closely resembles the WoW hunter (guns).

Why would they make a class that doesn't fit in the Diablo lore? The developer said that it is similar to an older class (wether that means archetype or gameplay style who knows) so people will be mad that they didn't bring back the old class instead of the new one.

When people talk like that, it feels like they're implying 'diablo lore' is solely defined by the second game. :( Only one of the characters made the transition from D1 -> D2, and it was totally different (a black vizjerei sorceror -> an asian eastern-clan sorceress). The warrior was split into Barbarian/Paladin, and the Rogue became the Amazon more or less. Blizzard's basically doing the exact same thing again this time around, except the Barbarian looks largely the same for once!

People resist change...

Thats why people hate D3.

Why did you guys play D2/D1? I know I played it because the gameplay was simplistic, but when you got into a full cow run game, it became awesome. My guess is people will realize that its a lot like D2, except character/graphics changes.

i agree, and i suffer from that on some things as well, including diablo, but i could care less about the characters, about the colors... or anything like that... its the music that drew me to diablo. gave it its mood and atmosphere. and i think he (matt) is doing the music, but i dont think its been confirmed.

but no one, no one is completly open minded... the gullability would destroy them, or skew them to the point of where they become closed minded.

I haven't forgotten about Diablo and that is why I said that it wouldn't surprise me. :? So I don't really need a history lesson on Diablo.

If you ask me it would have been better if they left the Barbarian (even though I like the Barbarian) out and continued the tradition of having completely new faces. When they include a familiar character, you can't prevent fans of the other characters wishing that their character was also included.

Anyway I don't think guns were in Diablo or Diablo 2 so unless it is supposed to be fairly far into the future of the Diablo Universe, I think it is fine to hold the view that they don't belong in Diablo 3. I want this game to feel more like Diablo than WoW. Is there something wrong with that?

those are words you put in my mouth... i did not say that.. you assumed i meant that.. i might still get the game if he doesnt do the music... MIGHT.

i hope he does, and if he doesnt do the music (which there are rumors stating he did, and it was finished in europe in 2006) if he doesnt do the music for it, im not gonna go out and get it as soon as it is out...

i will wait for price to drop and patches to come out...

but if he does do the composing.. then i will get it once it becomes available, pre-order even.

People resist change...

Thats why people hate D3.

Why did you guys play D2/D1? I know I played it because the gameplay was simplistic, but when you got into a full cow run game, it became awesome. My guess is people will realize that its a lot like D2, except character/graphics changes.

Not at all.. The only character I wish they had was the Necromancer.. It wasn't like any class for any rpg I played, skeletonmancer was so much fun.. I just hope they have a minion master like the necromancer, hopefuly its not the witch doctor, because what the demo showed was that minions served more as a distraction..

That probably means it's not going to be very diablo-lore-like. My guess it's "similar" to the amazon class, but more closely resembles the WoW hunter (guns).MTBare

I agree with you. I hope it'll be something similar. Why not ponder some classes we would like?

Monk - have some auras with fighting style like the amazon

Fallen Paladin - No auras but made up with more skilled attacks, and some mystic powers.

Thief - Setting up traps, some martial arts, throwing daggers, satchel charges.

Anything new would be great.

A lot of people were upset not having the Necro back. I listened to a podcast where the developers said because the Necro was so perfect in D2 it would be hard to improve on him in D3. So changing the skills, and augmenting to some extent would loose the essence of the Necro to a point where he would feel so different in D3. Or they could be making a real good excuse not to have him in.

hmm lets see... fallen paladin... like a dark jedi... meaning dark paladin? i like the idea actually... kinda like a melee-spell class, but with a dark aura, and not all this light side crap... i really like the idea dark/fallen paladin.

Dark paladin = Deathguard/Death Knight/ SHadow Knight.. If the paladin is a 3rd cleric/priest and 2 3rds warrior.. The "dark paladin" is undoubtly deals the exact opposite, 3rd necromancer/dark opposite of cleric/priest and 2 3rds warrior..

We had a monk in the second one too, the assassin.. Though her martial arts tree sucked and never improved over going traps.

Yeah that REALLY sucks about the necromancer.. I was hooked on Diablo 2 again a few months back.. Was playing my beloved Necromancer, skelemancer.. Could solo uber tristrem in like 8 minutes.. Was so fun.

What about a fallen angel?
Maybe an old friend of Tyrael?

A fighter/spell caster redeeming his/her angelic powers...

Or on the topic of dark characters.
A half breed demon/human?

Paladin is a holy knight, crusading in the name of good and order, and is a divine spellcaster. Paladins are always of the Lawful Good alignment.

So how can paladin be "dark" ?

A dark paladin is an unholy knight, crusading in the name of evil and chaos, and is a spellcaster devoted to evil divinities.

Paladins have no alignment because Dungeons and Dragons rules only apply to Dungeons and Dragons.

That wasn't very hard, was it?

I said this before... it's been a while and a lot of people at Blizzard have been replaced. I think the new people at Blizzard are going screw the company over! :(

Description from Diablo 2:

The Paladin is a member of religious warriors fighting for the glory of light and all that is good.

Blizzard uses lot of D&D rules in their games, warcraft 3 actualy used dices/rolls to calculate damage
