http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/11/3078215/apple-stub-etc-whatevs

The base model has a 2880x1800 "retina" display, a 2.3ghz i7, a GTX650m, 8 gigs of RAM, and a 256 gig SSD. The top end one, costing over $3,000, has 16 gigs of RAM and a 768gb SSD.

The specs are pretty awesome, but you certainly won't run any games at the resolution. And it costs a LOT for what you get. Does Apple actually think people will buy them?

If I had the money, that resolution would be beautiful for work. But man is it expensive.

Honestly, it seems like the laptop does most things right. A monitor with that resolution would easily cost $1,000. This isn't a "gaming" laptop. Games will default to 1440x900 unless they support the display (Only game confirmed right now is Diablo 3, but I'm sure WoW/SC2 will follow) and the GT 650m is more than enough to play any game at nice settings at that 1440x900. The resoultion is for regular day-to-day internet browsing, video editing (most will probably be using Final Cut meaning they'd need a Mac anyways), and graphic design (Photoshop, AutoCAD, etc.); not to mention Macbooks tend to have great battery life and this Macbook will be lighter/thinner than most laptops. You're definitely paying a premium price, but many will be able to justify the price.

I love the retina display, but that price is absurd and you don't really need the retina for a laptop. Playing games will be a nightmare but boy will they look good.

It's designed and priced for people who can write it off as a work expense essentially. The high end Macbook Pros have always been like this.

The new Macbook Pro looks like it'll be excellent for any photographers/graphic designers out there. If I had the money I'd pick one up, not like I use my laptops for gaming anyway.

Overpriced and the GTX650m isn't that good. Nvidia already released the GTX680m for Mobile which is actually pretty good. Not like it's desktop variant, but still quite performant. Paying about 2200$ to get a meh running machine that doesn't support all the games I would play... Without a doubt, I'd pass.

Mac users don't game. That's why they can justify the 650m to cut costs I'd imagine.

the problem is...at 1440 x 900 those games will look like crap. Playing games in not native res always makes them look bad and here the drop will be huge. But of course yes, it's not like anyone buys it for gaming.

Retina res is honestly just specs porn, anything above 1920 x 1080 is excessive and most people will never be able to notice the difference. Unless you're doing graphics work,.

Which is kind of the point, though. If you need a workstation $2k isn't unreasonable, and if you don't that's what the MBA line is for.

Desktop is different, as with big screens you can see pixels. But 1920 x 1080 on 15 inches is enough to make pixels practically invisible for majority of people

So while it is a nice feature, but most people won't be able to aprecieate it and the downsides are pretty big.

Huh? They've been updated to IVB low-voltage CPUs with HD4000 and a more reasonable 4GB RAM standard. Aside from the Zenbook Prime's optional IPS display and the sh*tty 64GB SSD in the base MBA 11, that's as good as it's going to get for that size of laptop (and discounts the fact ultrabooks are still struggling with pricing, build quality, keyboard/trackpad quality, and generally feature bottom-of-the-barrel 1366x768 panels).

That is just a reasonable comment. Especially because I'm sure all the components in your PC/phone/TV/*insert consumer electronic device here* are sourced only from factories that run on rainbows and the power of love, right?

Cool screen resolution,

might have been better to go 120Hz and 3D or touchscreen like win8 does. But of course Apple fans will say these things are useless (I've heard this one today) and in a year when Apple finally integrate them in the system, they will claim inovation.

The hipsters will pay any price to have that stupid logo on their hardware. Meanwhile, the smart PC owners have gear that outperforms their crap AND is a fraction of the cost.

There's nothing an Apple can do that a PC can't do better. Nothing.

The fact that Apple even exists is a testament to just how stupid the average consumer really is.

To be fair, 1440x900 is the only non-native resolution on that display that would be serviceable, simply because each cluster of four pixels would display one. I'd love to see that display in person, though. I had a 17" laptop a few years back with a 1920x1200 display and it was goddamn gorgeous.

More and more new Ultrabooks are having higher res displays as options, while Airs are stuck in low-res area for the next year. Heck..at Computex most new ultrabooks shown were 1080p. THere are even some ultrabooks with discrete gpu incoming.

Keyboard? Macbooks air use run of the mill chicklets, not any better than standard ones used in majority of ultrabooks and vastly inferior to one you can find in Thinkpad X1 carbon. Price? Ultrabooks are still cheaper than Airs, if only by a little. Built quality of them is excellent most of the time. The only thing Airs still excell at compared to others is trackpad, but even that gap is getting smaller and smaller

Bassicaly there's nothing special about Macbooks air anymore, they let other companies catch up and surpass them. It's not that Airs are bad, they're still will be excellent ultrabooks. But a year ago they untouchable in ultrabook market, while now they won't be a top dog anymore.

Not to mention considering how exciting the ultrabooks are getting now with the whole hybrids insanity, Air just seem plain boring. Altough of course it doesn't translate to their usability

With big laptops? COme close to what? THere are notebooks with more powerful hardware. There are notebooks with vastly better typing experience than Macbooks. There are also notebooks that are much sturdier built. It's not possible to say Macbooks are better than PC laptops or vice versa. Too many variables to consider. It all depends on what you want from your notebook. Obviously if you're graphics designer you will aprecieate the trackpad and insane res of new Pro. On the other hand if you're a gamer or 2D artist you will find many better options than Macbooks on PC market. If you're just a business man or a writer the high end Thinkads will be the best choice for you. It all depends on what you need from your notebook.

Unfortunatelly they insist on not having matte option anymore

But yes, Apple's always been good with laptop lcds (altough the ones in new Airs are a little meh). Currently the situations is greatly improving on PC market, with high res and high quality displays returning, but I think we can thank Apple for this progress as they are the ones who taught customers the value of quality displays and thus forced the whole competition to man up.

Guess I haven't really been paying attention to Computex, but I don't recall hearing about any of the smaller-spec ultrabooks getting much better hardware than the Airs, just the larger 14"+ spec.

They may just be run of the mill chiclets, but between my experiences and what ultrabook reviews I've read they sure as hell are a lot nicer to type on (granted, I'm sure the Thinkpad would be better). Pricing wise I haven't seen anything that really beats the Air in an apples-to-apples comparison -- usually you end up with either a comparable price or something like a hybrid drive or hideous display. Build quality is definitely better than standard laptop fare, but again between my experience and reviews it lags Apple.

I guess the difference is (and again, maybe I've just missed all the exciting new stuff) that while ultrabooks collectively may have the features to beat the Air line, individually no one ever puts all the pieces together (at least, not until the Zenbook Primes launch and get Windows 8's scaling). Everyone manages to screw up one element or another -- they'll get there eventually, but as things stand they're not there yet.

How many of those have 2880x1800 resolutions?

go find me a PC laptop that even comes close to anything apple makes.

dimensions count

In what? YOu will find ultrabooks that match or surpass Air.

Why would you need such a high resolution on such a small screen?

I am going to tell you about a place, visualize it with me:

There is a place, where pixels are too small to be seen on displays from the distance people view them

In this place people do not know the word "anti-aliasing"

Come join me in this place.

The better apples huge resolution electronics sell, the faster we will all get to this place.

Some day friends, some day.

That's an impressive pixel density. Hasn't got a very good GPU to power all those pixels, but these things won't be used for any more than Facebook and iTune, so it doesn't really matter.

GummiRaccoon

None, including all but one Macbook.

But since when such resolution become the most important aspect of notebooks? Since yesterday I'm guessing ;)

New Macbook Pro definitely wins in display res with everything else. If that's the most important thing in laptop to you then sure..Macbook Pro is best. For a different person a completely different thing might be most important aspect of notebook, and in many areas Macbooks are far from the best, so for those people other notebooks will best.

1920 is like that for majority of people on 13-15inches notebooks

Except aliasing (at least in 3D games) is still visible on retina displays, even on new iPad, which has much higher pixel density than new Macbook Pro. You would need a lot higher res to elimate it, so much it becomes counter productive to raise the res just for that, when anti-aliasing is less resources intensive

Whats the point of any other "important aspect"? We buy it to look at the screen, we dont drool at the CPU do we?

Apple thrives off the ignorance of consumers. They'll pay any premium just to have that Apple logo on their laptop.

Sheeple.
