What's hilarious is people like you think the hackers somehow have to let you know they are using your system. You do know there are viruses out there that only serve to hijack your PC to use in other illegal activities right? these viruses are programmed so you do not know they are there. You could have them right now and not know it because you don't scan for them. This is not 1990 people, you can actually run AV in the background with little resources now.

The problem is 10-15 years ago most viruses were made by a single or small group of users stretching their epeen whose main goal was to deny availability. The side effects were quite blatant and obvious as the person/group in charge wanted recognition more than anything else. The problem nowadays is that there is so much money and information online now that organized crime has taken a role in it.

Organized crime does not care about recognition, they care about the bottom line, so alerting users to their presence is not favorable. Just like everything else, AV is not the be all end all cure to viruses (they are usually 2-3 weeks out of fixing a newly discovered virus). Another problem is that their are tools like Backtrack and Blackbuntu, which makes hacking into a system all but trivial even with limited technical skills.

That's like saying you'll never have a flat tire and don't need to carry a spare as long as you watch where you're driving.

Better safe than sorry.

I was just about to post something like this. It's unfortunate that a few people need to post threads like this to bash those who use security suites.

Really because it sounds like a horrible idea that only people who have no idea what they are doing would do.

Not so much seat belt or flat tire - I think it's more akin to 'I never need to get tested for STDs, I'm careful about who I sleep with.' Not everything out there is going to immediately announce its presence loudly to your computer, and it's the stuff that doesn't do that I'd be worrying about anyway.

[QUOTE="KalDurenik"]I have a quick question... How do you know that you dont have a virus... without a virus program or something that warns you about it? Not every virus is about making the computer fail. Some are about opening ports, finding passwords, bank information etc etc. Reminds me about a friends computer... "Him: LOL NEVER HAD A VIRUS TROLOLOLO" me: Well lets install a anti virus program... he had over 500 viruses on his computer :)Travis_Odell

I forgot to mention that i run Avast and search and destroy yesterday and it found nothing, so i uninstalled and sent the programs to the recycle bin. I do use Ad block plus for Mozilla it's perfect.

The free version of avast is about as useful as eating steak with a spoon. My laptop was unable to process anything, so I ran a virus scan with free avast a couple of times and got rid of a couple minor threats, still the computer didn't work. I then bought bitdefender did a proper scan and removed 5 threats afterwards the computer was clean as a whistle and worked just fine.

Uhm I have had Avast free for a few years and its been fantastic, never caused a crash or anything. Shouldnt really use those to clear current threats anyway, they are more for future protection, should probably use Malwarebytes to clear existing viruses and threats.

Don't need protection if you don't go to pron sites, right?

No reason to wrap it up if you remember to pull out, right?

I think I'm on my 3rd license of Avast, I've always used the free. It has system scan, real-time shields, etc. It catches website malware and trojans off Ad's etc on the regular. Take www.ultimaaiera.com for example. Its baically a blog site, but I've been using it for years. Their webservers Ad service got infected with some crap two or three weeks ago out of the blue. Like someone else said, nothing is safe. You could get a serious virus from visiting the department of justice website if the right savvy hacker imbedded a good enough trojan into their service somehow.

Look I'm not gonna go on about how awesome Avast is because frankly I already know and don't need to convince you for free. All I'm saying is try it out (ITS FREE...) and you will not be dissapointed. Even if you don't like it, you won't remember you have it in two weeks anyways BECAUSE ITS NON-INTRUSIVE, DOESN'T SLOW DOWN YOUR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE, AND KEEPS OUT SYSTEM STD's.

THANKS

I haven ever been hacked or keylogged. I think the last time I had a virus was maybe 7 or 8 years ago on Windows XP. I can't even remember.

Yes I agree as long as you don't go to stupid sites or click on stupid things, you should never get a virus. But not using an anti-virus is a dumb move.

Avast has blocked malware and spyware many times from me just clicking on legit looking sites from google search.

Avast Free + Windows Defender is all I need.

KHAndAnime

Or you could get Noscript. :P

I use noscript & adblock plus. Still got the malware warning just by clicking on the site.

Tip: Many antiviruses label harmless cookies as malware. Avast is probably one of these.
