anyone know if my laptop can run cod4? i mean, it can run batman aa at near max setting pretty well
What does "lots of Steam support" mean exactly? Obviously the game will be available through it, but will it also have for e.g. steam achievements, community features, dlc or something like that?ManicAce
No dedicated Servers and Steam is rumored to have to be used with it.

They consolized server searching basically, no mods, no custom maps ect.

Woah.
Nah, the PC version is going to cost the same as the console versions. $60MadCat46Hmm, apparently you are right, it is listed at $60, which seems to be a first. But, new pc games typically are on sale for at least $10 off in the weekly ad for either Best Buy or Target in the first or second week of release. Still, not needing Xbox Gold to play the same game online is always a bonus.
It will probably be supported by steam as a drm, like Empire:tw. A way for them to reduce the second-hand sale on ebay, since the game will be tied on your steam account. On the other side, you don't need the dvd after, you can just download the game and it will be auto-patched. I doubt they would be dumb enough to use a p2p mp on pc, but we never know... Atleast, they are not using gfwl... Still not getting it, these kind of kind are so overrated, especially the mindless mp

.....why did fourzerotwo make the steam support thing sound like a good thing? aren't dedicated servers a good?I don't mind if Steam is mandatory with it, though it is one more thing where things can go wrong, CoD4 was always such a smooth exprience I'd had hoped they'd stick with the same system, and we should definately know these things already as it's less than a month away. No servers is BS though and pretty much no buy for me.Hmm, apparently you are right, it is listed at $60, which seems to be a first. I'm sure you can find it on sale somewhere first week, same for consoles.
As to the game itself. Never understood the alure of the Call of Duty series, the original was good fun but every release since has continued pour out the same thing under a fresh coat of paint. Nothing about this game really grabs my interest as it's all the same thing that I've seen before in the series minus a few minor things. This game just seems way to over-hyped for what in reality it's going to be.
nope, craptavision made the PC version $60 as well.Cool. PC gamers will be able to play just as soon as the consoles, and also get the game for $10 less. And of course playing online will not cost extra unlike Xbox version.

I'm pretty sure i read in another thread that the console version will cost $70.
Btw are the map packs going to be free for PC, or are they planning on making it dlc?

Its been confirmed they will use a system called IW.Net, no dedicated. I'm watching as Pre-orders get cancelled :P.

It's too soon to really be upset, granted Fourzerotwo has specify Steam support. A user pointed out that MW2 will utilize Steamworks(Same tech that powers Left 4 Dead), so I'm certain there will be matchmaking. However, by using this system I do expect future DLC fees.

There is a difference, L4D uses dedicated servers which allows it to have custom maps and mods eg 8v8 servers. IW.Net is a P2P service that doesn't allow either.
Here are the comments that were made a few hours ago.
Fourzerotwo was on our BASH webcast this morning and he had a few surprises for the PC community.
Here are the snippets:
* We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone.
* There is no delay for the PC version of MW2
* There's prestige mode
* Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET.
* you can play players on the same rank.
* you are completely reliant on IW.NET. There is no server lists. There are no dedicated servers.
* You have private matches where you can customize the game
* You cannot put MW2 on a dedicated server.
* This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into.
* Customizing your game...you have quite a few options in a private match
* You're getting same game (as in Console), plus matchmaking and private match.
* Server admin point-of view, NO DEDICATED SERVERS
I've summarized some of my own thoughts here:
General
* IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.
* GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.
* No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.
* Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.
* DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.
Clans:
* No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.
* Listen servers will connect to each other.
* IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin
Competitive Gaming
* Competitive gaming has changed forever.
* It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.
Modding
* Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.
* Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.
Today our game has changed for ever.
I'll leave this post with Josh Peckler's comments from planetmedalofhonor.com:
The server community is what's made us. It's what defined us.
IW.NET is getting the PC community to turn into consoles. You're trying to re-write our history.

PC and console are both listed for $60 at retailers. No dedicated servers and matchmaking in its place? No thanks. Well that's $60 I can spend on something else.
First no dedicated servers. Now no clan servers? WTH my clan has been preparing for months for a MW2 server now they kick us in the groin like this? I hope sales flop for MW2. k0r3aN_pR1d3trust me, sales of the console versions are going to be biblical. IW will barely notice....which sucks something awful considering they started out on pc with cod1

The Story of the last few years for this industry unfortunately.
I think all this cuz they want to Fight Piracy Dark_prince123i do remember that when cod4 first came out fourzerotwo made a blog post about how they could tell that like 60% of online players were pirates. or some ridiculous crazy percentage. so i guess it makes sense...
I think all this cuz they want to Fight Piracy Dark_prince123Nonsense. I doubt that piracy has even affected sales of the PC version that much where they have turn totalitarian on us. Video game companies are overreacting as usual. People pirate music all the time but the Music industry doesn't clamp down and sell CD's with only half the songs on it or that kind of rubbish (and despite music piracy, the music industry continues to thrive). Infinity Ward is a bunch of cowards and idiots and I'll make that point clear in my deluge of e-mails I'm sending them. Apart from that, I hope Treyarch continues the noble tradition of having a list of private servers.

For every 1 legal buyer of Call of Duty 4 there were 4 illegal versions.

hell yeahNot going to hammer Infinity Ward, due to IW has shared great support for the PC community for many years. This direction really reflects an influence from Activision to maximize profits, much like in the Activision/Blizzard space(World of Warcraft is a perfect example).
Personally, this direction doesn't seem like a very bright idea, but I will continue to hold my judgement until more information is dispense.

The company is called Activision-Blizzard for a reason. It's one company.
[QUOTE="OoSuperMarioO"]Activision has no jurisdiction over Blizzard.True, but from a perspective of Blizzard today then in the past, they seem much more aggressive to maximize profits. Yeah, I'm calling BS on that one. No way in hell pirates outnumber actual bought copies for CoD4. Nah, it did outnumber the paid copies by a pretty huge number. IW knows and didn't really do much to stop it with COD4, but it looks like they are doing something about it now with this game. I think they're also doing it because they know the game's going to be quality and people are going to buy it left and right, so this is a perfect time to push change through that would kill sales of a lesser game. Also lettuceman, Activision -could- have jurisdiction over Blizzard if the board felt like doing it. Thus far they're choosing to stay far away from touching Blizzard, knowing that Blizz knows how to print money on their own. Some of my friends that work at Activision have said they're pretty worried that the Activision side might soon get some funny ideas in their head about trying to exercise control over Blizz, though. Please Log In to post.
