doom collector's edition (old, but awesome) system shock 2 (also old, but one of the best games ever made) call of duty 2 (a great world war 2 shooter) far cry (a visually astounding jungle-based shooter) half life 1 and 2 (two of the most respected fps games ever made) escape from butcher bay (a chronicles of riddick game, awesome - even if you hate the films (like i did)) f.e.a.r (a really great horror themed game with slow motion) max payne 1 and 2 (an awesome third person shooter series with really cool storytelling through graphic novel scenes) the brothers in arms games (both of them, combine shooter and strategy as you control squads of men to use suppression & flanking to kill the enemy) doom 3, quake 4 or prey (none are great, but they each run in the beautiful doom 3 engine and it's worth checking out just for the visuals) battlefield 2 or battlefield 2142 (online competitive team based shooters)
there are many, many more - but the above is a hundred or so hours of gameplay to get you started
as for online, if you're talking about how much an internet service provider costs, check their local sites - if you're talking about how much it costs to play those games online - guess what? it's free on the pc! - all you do is fire up the game, find a server and join, and you're playing for free

if you wanna play the singleplayer game, though, you gotta buy a boxed copy of the game

Can't go wrong with the classics, like HL2 and F.E.A.R. As for online cost, you'll have to check with your IP. Games themselves are free to play online ofcourse.
I prefer to play: Medal of Honor Allied Assault(get the War chest with the expansions), oldie but goodie Call of Duty (i prefer the first over the second but they are both good)and United Offensive adds tanks Counter-Strike Source(if you want modern setting) Battlefield 2(if you want tanks, helis, and jets as well as infantry)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â oh yea and Unreal Tournament 2004(lots of good mods, and if you want a scifi type of shooter)
