Awesome! I remember buying an Indiana Jones game and another fantasy game that came in huge boxes, like lunchbox size. They were on floppy disks :P

Yea, most of the box is empty space, the Diablo one is in a jewel case with the manual. The manual is very detailed and explains a lot of the lore. Now developers are too lazy to bother putting together a decent manual. I also saved the advertisement inserts. They were all talking about the wonders of the internet and how you can browse the net with NetScape!

Good ol Netscape! haha.

I remember download the demo to Duke Nukem on dial up and how I thought it was SOOO cool to be able to download a demo for a game haha.

Lets not forget the dialup modem games of Doom2, where if someone picked up the phone or if you recieved a call the game would disconnect :P

Ah dial up. Good times when seeing the phone bill and it says you made a call for 5 hours! There's another ad about signing up for internet service for AT&T.

No more game boxes or manuals, its sad... Oldest game box I have is the original NWN. It looks about the size of those. Does Blizzard at least still use cardboard? Seems they were the last man standing in that regard lol... BC came in a cardboard with the flipout cover, kind of old school, but just smaller...

Good old days... Same thing is happening to movies. VHS were big bulky boxes DVDs were smaller Now BluRays are even smaller... I guess at the end it's ok, cause you need less room to store and it still looks good...

I didn't find out until midday about the Twin Towers attack cause of Dial Up... I was downloading the HD Trailer for Lord of the Rings.... and reading a book (my TV was off). Everyone was trying to call me (no mobiles back then) to tell me about the Twin Towers, but it took about 3 hours to download that trailer....lol

I certainly do remember them.

I had so many of them... I threw most of them away a little while ago and put the CDs in a wallet and the manuals in a folder. They just took up FAR too much room.

But I do still have these two:

Yeah I remembered buying a standard edition Baldur's Gate and it comes with a really thick manual (as compared to now), a few other booklets, a CD casing with very nice cover and a CLOTH MAP. That was really cool... Also remembered when I bought flight sim...couldnt remember which title but man, the manual was so thick and the information inside was pretty detailed its like reading a real flight training book haha... I especially miss having thick manuals...heck, I bought most of my games on Steam now...

Or when you get on an online game with 56k and everyone else has ISDN. "Who the f* got on here with 700 ping... 56k noob!" I'm glad they got rid of the ridiculous boxes, they took up too much damn space. Europe started selling them in DVD cases long before we did. I remember thinking, why can't we do that? I just moved and got rid of all of my junk including all of those boxes that were just sittin around. Put it all in a CD case and it looks so much better. Kept the manuals as well.

Yeah Starcraft 2 is in a cardboard box. Not the size of the old ones, but the same as Warcraft 3 and WoW boxes. Makes me happy to see them sticking with cool boxes. Plus they have always had some interesting flip out covers and if they switched over to dvd cases they would need the slip covers that are annoying as hell.

At least Blizzard never jumped on the big *** dvd cases that could fit roughly 5 discs, but never contained more than two. That **** was annoying.

Yeah, I remember. I'm also glad that trend died. I hated having to keep those huge boxes around, and it was especially aggravating when you'd open one up to find a single CD/DVD in a paper sleeve with an instruction booklet inside. Such a waste of resources and space.

I never really cared for the big boxes. Though if you're interested in claiming one more "big box" game, the Elemental LE comes in a big box.

The Secret of Monkey Island game was the best. Huge cardboard box, thin manual, four floppies, scroll wheel device thingy for anti-piracy measures you swivelled around to match the picture with the security question. Good times.

Everything used to be higher quality.

I remember when vinyl records used to come with poster art, and a large concert book, with photos of the band on tour, lyrics to all the songs, and bios on all the band members.

I feel sorry for kids today - they're getting ripped off - and don't even know it.

Yep, game boxes, artwork, maps, manuals all used to be a big part of buyinga new game. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the ease of Steam, but one of best aromas in the world is that of a freshly opened game box. :)

I have a cool box from NHL Hockey by Ea sports(ea canada) from the 1992-1993 season. Hard cover box with a open side that holds another hard box for the floppy disks, and a full sized 224 page gloss cover manual with complete team and player stats for that season. Brings memories back of the Hartford whalers, Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques and the all the old uniforms.

I still have a load of games with their large boxes - though mostly packed away in larger storage boxes.

I do still keep a few out, though mainly just collectors editions or other rare finds.

I also have an X-COM 1&2 Collectors edition boxset containing UFO Enemy Unknown and Terror From The Deep, both with full strategy guides, that rival the Falcom 4 pics earlier in this thread for thickness of manual.

I certainly do remember them.

I had so many of them... I threw most of them away a little while ago and put the CDs in a wallet and the manuals in a folder. They just took up FAR too much room.

But I do still have these two:

My DE box was quite different...it was shiny metalic blue. very nice. sadly i dont have any of my boxes anymore. the best game in terms of bits in the box though was ultima 9. cloth map, 2 manuals, cards and other random stuff. too bad the game was pants but the box was great :)

The weirdest box I ever had was the original Day of the Tentacle Box like the one below. Sadly, I threw mine away early on.
