I bought this game a few months ago and can't really find a reason to go on playing. Right now I'm in Hell's kitchen looking for my brother paul. Does this game pick up later? So far, I find the story hard to follow and unintresting.

Sounds to me like you've just started, Yes it will pick up.TreflisIF by playing for 5 hours counts as just starting then sure.
Haha I need to give this game a serious chance someday. I tried it half a year ago and I couldn't even bother to get past the training rooms / tutorials. It's just like witcher, I stopped playing after like two hours. Why you ask? I don't want to have thousand complex things thrown at me the moment I enter the game. Just let me start up and chill a bit instead of immediately introducing fifty alchemy reciepts or giving me two hour long tutorials on how to pick locks and aim a gun.
IF by playing for 5 hours counts as just starting then sure.JangoWuzHerethe first few missions serve as an extended tutorial; the game "starts" after Hell's Kitchen.
the game starts to be enjoyable when youre in police headquarters, then you realise it was worth it to not uninstall it ^^
No it hasn't, I played it in 2008 or something and loved it. Maybe the TC just isn't that kind of gamer, TC have you actually been playing the game or just trying to finish it? Are you exploring every cranny, trying to find every log and items? Did did this to a point where you went into the woman's bathroom at UNATCO and Manderley scolded you for it and realized how much time was spent perfecting this game design and it's ability to approach objectives in multiple forms that no other game today has matched? It was a great game when it came out (one of my favorites) but it aged horribly.

Huh, when I made a thread about this very same thing I was blasted back to the stone age. I got to hong kong and stopped playing. I can see how it was great 10 years ago and ahead of its time but playing it today After being spoiled by the many great games released since then, It dosent really hold my interest. Tc if you really want to play this game install the new vision mod, it makes the graphics decent.

Alpha Protocol dammit!
yeah pretty much, using weapons that you're skilled with makes all the difference. IZoMBiEIThe Alpha Protocol approach? Neat. :)
Keep playing. Like most classic games, it requires you to put something into it before you get a lot out of it.I bought this game a few months ago and can't really find a reason to go on playing. Right now I'm in Hell's kitchen looking for my brother paul. Does this game pick up later? So far, I find the story hard to follow and unintresting.

it's a pretty old game. i tried playing it a while back, and couldn't get into it. but i could see why the game has such a following. i played it too late. these older games you need to play since the day they came out to really understand their appeal.
Not true. I didn't play it until last year and it's easily one of my favorite PC games. I think it has more to do with not expecting current generation graphics and gameplay "innovations". It's easy for me to put myself in the mindset to appreciate older games because I grew up with them. Plus most games we play these days are a lot more focused around instant gratification, and that's sort of the generation we've become.it's a pretty old game. i tried playing it a while back, and couldn't get into it. but i could see why the game has such a following. i played it too late. these older games you need to play since the day they came out to really understand their appeal.

Its a dated game the stroy is Ok at best, retty generic imho, and the combat is bad, but to be fair these were new things at the time and we just have somewhat higher standards today interms of how a game feels and plays. Its dated but its a decent game. The New deus Ex seems to bring the best of Deus ex 1 and modernize it as in makin it control better more fun, the new Deus ex already has more than 200,000 lines of conversation, more choices yadda yadda. SO all the interaction will be their but it will obviously look better and play better.
This is a 45-50hour game for a first time through-er. Lots of story and details to follow and figure out. If you need to be spoon fed excitement in games, you might as well quit and go play a game made for the masses.
VeryBumpy
really i only took about 21 hours, and really what is with your elitist remark, If you need "spoon fed excitement" "game for the masses" as if your level or taste in games is above other peoples, maybe they are called better games. I wouldn't call Half-life 2, Uncharted 2, Gears of war all taht stuff spoon fed, its just the nature of the type of game they are action, not everyone wants to spend 50 hours crouching around corners, if anything Deus ex was more spoon feeding interms of story, the story was bland and not exciting or climactic at all, you should try reading about a story's climax it is what usually makes good novels.

KHAndAnime
I agree, KH. Your comment brings to mind something that makes me roll my eyes which I will get to in a second. I can appreciate that many people like to jump into a game and not have to think. If you're having fun, there's certainly no harm in that. I play plenty of games like that.
What makes me roll my eyes is when I read comments from people who say they didn't like a game because (I will paraphrase), "the controls sucked" or "there was too much information thrown at me" or "if I wanted to read a book, I'd read a book". I understand the appeal of wanting to play simple, fun games. I play them myself, but it's kind of annoying when people rate a game low because they are too lazy to learn something new to themselves.
 These claims are ignorant, there's probably a hundred gamers frequenting here that played Deus Ex for their first time post 2005 and loved the game.Ignore these so called 'classic gamers'. they have their nostalgia goggles on 24/7. if you think the game isn't good then stop playing it. simple.
PS I didn't like it either

It has nothing to do with fitting it. It has to do with having an attention span and be able to see a game for its gameplay and not for its shiny graphics. I feel sorry for people who can't appreciate classics. These claims are ignorant, there's probably a hundred gamers frequenting here that played Deus Ex for their first time post 2005 and loved the game.[QUOTE="KHAndAnime"][QUOTE="Eneru112"]

He's right though. I'm purely objective and can see that Deus Ex has many, many flaws but it also outshines almost every single game in scope, depth, writing, intelligence and so on. Hell, when I think about it, there was more thought put into the placement of doors in Deus Ex than put into an entire game this generation. Something that banal really shows how intelligent the game is. Each to their own and all that, if you don't like it fine; but you simply cannot disregard hundreds of thousands of people who adore this game; it deserves it.I think this is a love it hate it game. People that love it defend it with there life every time there is a thread like this, then there are people that can just not understand the appeal the game has. Mirrors edge is like this for me, I would give the game a 9.5, I loved it and am playing trough a 2nd time, but most here will feel about mirrors edge, the way i feel about Dues ex. In the end its all opinions, but if you are 5 hrs in and dont like the game STOP PLAYING it dosent magically get better and turn in to a completely different game then you are already hating.

You sir are my new hero.
On topic, yes, the game does get better. It doesn't hold your hand the way this generation's games do, which might take some getting used to. And to add some fuel to the fire, I watched one of my friends playing this so-called great MGS game and it felt like he was watching the game with me :D
Once you go into the airplane docked in the hangar and have a brutal showdown with some robot whore the game starts getting good.
TJamesA
HA! I remember that one. During my first playthrough there wasn't a brutal showdown, I was just following orders. Second playthrough, I left some mines by the door. :D

I know I'm not, everything I do is subject to my own unique experiences. I didn't see many many flaws but I do agree with you assessment of the thought going into the game.
It took me a long time to play through the game because I would play different stratagies as I went. I know a save anywhere you want system. Who Knew?:)
I dont see how, when I play a game for the first time I play the way I want to play it, if it is worth another play trough I try and play it a different way if you are able to, to change it up. I dont read about how I should play it trough my first time around, wouldnt that defeat the purpose of a RPG?Advid-GamerIf you read a walk-through, yes. If you read a guide that covers only the game-play, no. In Dragon Age, the first boss battle took me all of four seconds to finish -- solid one-hit kills by the boss on every single one of my party, including me. So I turned off the game, grabbed the manual, and actually read the sections on combat and NPC tactics, realized I'd been doing everything completely wrong and went back to try again. Beat him with ridiculous ease once I changed my approach to combat and played the game the way the developers intended the game to be played.
I'd say it's actually a lot more common with classics. They have loyal fans who, intentionally or unintentionally, build up a lot of hype and high expectations, that the game then has difficulties living up to.it's an undeniable classic game but i can see how it could be a bit inaccessible for people who didn't play it within the first few years of release. sometimes its like that with old games, even classics

ChiliDragon
good point, agreed
I'll admit that Deus Ex appears a bit dated now (especially graphically), it is a pretty old game. You have to remember that one of the reasons it suffers in comparison to some modern games is that those modern games look back to Deus Ex for the inspiration. Deus Ex once set a standard, one that has been imitated many times. Alpha Protocol and Mass Effect? Deus Ex is where those games started. It's really the first game in the FPS/RPG type of genre. Current games can do a lot of the things Deus Ex did better, simply because computers and consoles can handle longer, more complicated coding and AI today, but Deus Ex is really where it started.
That said, not everyone is going to be able to get past its dated standards and graphics. I feel a bit sorry for the people who didn't get to play it when it first came out, because it was really fantastic by all standards at that time. Even today it's one of my 5 favorite games of all time, and I think I'm going to go install it again.
