[QUOTE="Greyhound222"]I loved Morrowind, except when trying to fight. The combat system was broken in that game and left no skill to be found.Oblivion is much better IMO.kyrieee

Which made perfect sense, for a role-playing game.
Your abilities in combat should be determined by your character's weapon skills, not the player's skills. It may make the combat feel broken, but it was supposed to be that way - otherwise you end up with Altmer mages that can easily hit/kill anything in melee combat.

Well no. That's just the way it's always been. Rolling dices was natural when pen & paper RPGs came about, but dices aren't in the defenition of roleplaying. You don't use your character's skills for everything, because then you wouldn't be playing now would you? You don't have a "solve puzzle" skill, or "equip the right weapon" skill or "go the right way" skill. How much you leave to the player is a design decision, but I think that the old approach is getting somewhat archaic, computer games can do more than that.

well said

I've only played Oblivion so I wouldn't comment on Morrowind...

But some of the cons on Oblivion seem unfair... Sure the main storyline lacked in content and impact...

But the fun came from many of the varied guild missions (I enjoyed the Dark Brotherhood missions quite a bit)

These missions were also the bulk of the hrs spent on Oblivion. Some also brought great additions to the experience (Mage Guild made you enchant weapons and had a create-a-spell , Dark Brotherhood gave stat boost items that were useful till the end, etc)

And many Daedric Shrines gave quests that had hilarious effects (stripping a bunch of royal people during supper) as well useful items (non-breakable lockpic).

The action oriented game play was also refreshing.

That's still a negative, since Oblivion only had ~5 guilds to advance through. Morrowind had, what, 15?

I feel that both games had good points, but I'd have to say that I liked Morrowind better. It felt deeper and more involved, there seemed to be a lot more to do, and it felt more like a true RPG. I enjoy Oblivion, but it just isn't in the same class of RPG. They ripped out too much in the pursuit of accessibility, and tried to fill the holes with pretty pictures. Didn't quite work, though, I still think the designers were smoking crack when they made some of their decisions.

I only finished the main quest and the mage guild quest and spent 80+ hours doing so...most of the time I played was spent on doing side quest, which were more fun to me. I never did finish Knights of the Nine because it seemed like it would just be running around for more treasure. The Shivering Isles was much more fun and I wish Oblivion had been entirely more quirky like that...even then, I didn't finish that expansion pack. I just got bored. I saved my game, however, and will finish it later. Morrowind was way more indepth, despite its aged graphics. I'll take aged graphics and plot depth over uber-modern graphics and mediocre plot anyday.

Oblivion + Morrowind = pretty good

I'm going with morrowind since I play it more. It needed alot more balancing and testing, but holds my attention longer. Take the horses (quick travel AND horses seems kind of redundant), AI, and combat of oblivion and put it in morrowind and you got yourself a good game. I can't enjoy either one, because I like paying a thief character. Morrowind makes that hard because of the starting stats. 35 max in stealth vs like oh, I don't know, 50+ in weapon skills. I just don't feel very assassiny running in broad daylight with a claymore. The combat in oblivion made up for that with sneak attacks, BUT you can't sell your ill-gotten goods to Joe-shmoe merchant in that podunk village, 'cause his degree taught him how to tell the difference. Although, if I saw a red hand print on something someone was selling me, I'd probably be suspicious too. So scratch that idea.

Anyway, when I get frustrated with said games, I fire up the Gothic series. The gameplay is so much better. Everything has its own daily schedule. Even enemies. Want to put stealth to good use? Sneak past your enemies while they sleep. Too many baddies after you? Those two goblins in front of the cave call for the eight just inside? (now you have ten) Find some lizards. they like nasty meat. Too many wolves behind you? The local farmers will be more than happy to protect their sheep. Just make sure your "help is willing and able to help. Large orc behind you? Town guard will take care of it, right? Right? Hey! Why is everyone running into the castle and locking the door! The pluses go on and on. The only real deterrent is the controls. The first two are designed for keyboard only; a little different, but very precise.

Back to Morrowind and Oblivion. I prefer Morrowind because there's more variety to it.

(note GS hmtl code errors)

thats it i think someone should start a petition for a revamped morrowind, just adding TES4's Engine into Morrowind would blow Oblivion out of the water.

i remember the time i went to the dentist and my dentist was really into morrowind, so he told me a story about his melee alchemist. so he started out making intellect potions so he could get smarter and drink them afterwards. so when he made the next intellect pot that pot would be stronger, so he kept making more and more, exponentially growing in potency, so eventually his character had his intellect stat in the lower millions, so he eventually started selling the pots to a vendor in balmora, each pot literally took all the vendors money, so he could only sell one a day, the after-effects of the int. pots would last for days. so he started making strength potions, and after making just one his strength was in the hundred thousands. he character was so strong that whenever he used a weapon ex. like a claymore he could kill people in One Hit , but the Weapon would break! So he started carrying multiple weapons in his inventory whenever he left town (like 7 swords, 2 knives, 4 hammers). I Know it sounds crazy, but if you don't believe me go out and try it yourself. for me it was the imbalance in TES3 that makes the gaming experience unforgetable.

Morrowind is hard to get into at first but once you get past level 10 or so the game really picks up, plus there are some things in morrowind that you could never ever do in Oblivion! Morrowind is immersive in ways that oblivion will never be, for example the first walk into the main island in morrowind, most players believe the sand stormsare natural, but it isnt till the end of the main storyline that you actually discover the truth. morrowind is full of secrets full of great in-game depth, you literally are in another wolrd.

Besides graphics, physics, and combat Morrowind is definately the best RPG experience i ever had. which reminds me of the story-endings in both games. At the end if morrowind with the help of (sunder? sumthin) you fight a nearly immortal god inside a volcano. At the end of Oblivion you really dont fight any mythical crazy gods, you just escort the king into the center of town and he turns into a dragon (omgwtf?dragon), and does a mini godzilla style battle with the orange dude with four arms (sheo-sumthin?). With 60 gates in the game i didnt find the ending forfilling in any way. (oh...gate open, let me guess, in town. wow who woulda known?). i tried closing all the gates in oblivion, but after the 28th gate i started just running through the towers and closed them. After the 35th or 40th i just said fvuck it, not worth it, plus there isnt anything special at the end.

If you like Kings, Horses And Fairy's, Oblivion is just the game for you

If you like to experience an entirely different universe filled with limitless potential and mystery then Morrowind is masterpiece/artpiece for you.

morrowind wins hand down, in oblivion all the weapons feel the same, there is no point leveling up, and although all hell is breaking loose, everything is calm around the world, and they really captured hell well, a repetitive place that will drive you insane and make you feel deja vu, besides that oblivion is good

I liked Oblivion, but I think I prefer Morrowind. It's a shame we'll never play Morrowind with the engine on Oblivion.

still, it was lame and very annoying

it's no where near as lame as the whole "everyone levels up along with you never making you feel strong and powerful" thing oblivion had.

Multiple mods to fix it. Anyway, sort of stupid to miss a guy about 50 times in a row who's right in front of you.

Morrowind has the better modding community, which is what I care about. I know Oblivion will eventually catch up, but currently Morrowind mods are just godly. I mean, has anyone else ever played Children of Morrowind?

I prefer Morrowind.

Reasons, artistry and architecture. The world was more interesting and it seemed larger.

SEANMCAD

Agreed, although Oblivion had a larger world, due to the pace, and the fact you couldn't travel anywhere and everywhere, Morrowind seemed a much bigger game. I love the fantastical style of Morrowind as well.
