Well Vista is the new OS, so it wont be as smooth and "bug Free" as Windows XP, also some programs don't work on Vista right now.

At the same time, Vista will be patched up, it will probably run better, more prgrams will support it, and of course as you

mentioned, Directx 10

I think that in 6-7 months Vista will be about the only OS that major PC builders like Dell, HP, Gateway etc will put in their builds...Some stuff about Vista i really like, then other things i kinda hate lol.  But Micro$oft needs to release a SP1 for Vista before i buy it...still seems kinda bugy, but i bet in less than a year Vista will be the way to go.  DX10 will be awesome....good thing RAM is fairly cheap now, Vista is a memory hog for sure...2gigs is the minimum i would want to run with it...

I personally like Vista more than XP (mainly for its Aero interface), but I'm currently not using because of game performance. I'll likely switch to Vista once some better drivers get released for my NVIDIA 7-series card or when I buy a new videocard (ATI or NVIDIA).

How badly is game peformance on Vista when compared to XP, Einhanderkiller?

I have a 768MB 8800 GTX Core 2 Duo XPS 710 that's yet-to-be-shipped.  How good will my games look with Vista?

Cons: A very small number of issues with games, 1GB ram usually will not cut it.

Pros: Great interface/features. Very pretty ;) Better security than XP. 360 Connectivity. More I'm sure... Oh, and DX10, DX10, DX10!!!!

It's a good O/S now, and it will get better and better as time goes on.

Oh, and I've maxed out everything I've thrown at my comp so far w/an E6600 and 8800GTS 640mb.

Vista isn't really a memory hog as many believe. Vista, like Mac OS X, tries to use up as much as RAM as possible as a cache to speed up the loading of applications. This is a good thing because it's actually using your memory instead of just keeping it idle (why pay for 2GB of RAM if you're not even going to use 2GB?).

Vista is okay, but I'd highly recommend that you stick with XP.

If you can, do a dual boot so you dont have to throw out any of your software like anti-virus or DVD burning utilities

Most Anti-virus programs are now updated to work with Vista and I've yet to have trouble with any DVD burning utilities with the exception of older InCD versions. (If you upgrade to Vista make sure your backups are standard data discs! I made the mistake of keeping my InCD-made backups and there's no way to read them in Vista.)

vista is good if you have a lot of ram and a new system, not so good if you can only barely run it.

I'm sure drivers have gotten better since I last used Vista, but when I used it around 2 to 3 months ago, I saw around a 300% decrease in performance in Source engine games. I also saw framerate drops in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I'm pretty sure the driver situation has improved since then, however. At least for NVIDIA's 8-series cards. Some have reported getting higher framerates in Vista than in XP.

On Vista Basic maybe, if you are talking about any of them that actually use Aero I'm calling shenanigans right now.

Im getting vista home premium, with AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 4200+, 2.2Ghz. with 1GB ram, Nvidia Geforce 7500LE.. im pretty sure those specs should handle the jandle.

now im sure vista basic is crap. vista basic is very basic, and its UI is really bad. home premium, buisness and ultimate all have the AERO UI. and, Aero, is graphics hungry, and RAM hungry. but the way vista, as an OS, works with a lot CPU. vista basic has quite low minimum specs, mainly cos of its UI.

i think that vista running games around 1 year old and down will suffer framerates, where as newer games will work much better. the problem now is just patcing up games to get them running better on vista. also, alot of games are not compatable with Dx10, and thefore should be patched.  but the games being released now, in the last year or so, and in the future to come will be games made for vista, thefore vista is the way to go. it is Specs hungry, but lets just say give 6 months or so, and things should be better.

I have been running Vista since launch and have found it to be a great operating system. My only complaint to date has been the lack of an add/remove programs function and software compatability issues.  I'd highly recommend it as part of a dual boot sytem with XP.

I've used Vista for nearly two months and have no complaints. Regarding RAM usage, I have 1 GB of RAM and normal Vista processes use up around 50% of that RAM. Whether that leaves enough to be useful, I'll let you decide, but if you're getting Vista for gaming you'll probably need to get more RAM anyway. I have the 64 bit version and there are compatibility issues with programs (some just don't work right with Vista, some only apply to the 64-bit version). However the issues aren't in any large amount to hinder use of the system, in my opinion.

PROS: It looks pretty, searching is much improved, seems very stable CONS: Memory hog (useless for power users without 2GB RAM), driver compatibility, sucks for current-gen games and DX9 graphics cards (likely a driver issue) Unless you are putting together a new machine, there is really no reason to upgrade to Vista. Overall I find it to be considerably slower than XP, even though the specs on my machine are very strong. Vista will be more useful as the drivers get better and the bugs are refined but, for now, stick with XP if possible.

Is it true that Vista prevents dual/multi-boot configuration and partitioning? Sounds like bullcrap, I just don't see how an OS can do that.

If so, there goes my plan for using Linux/XP/Vista idea.

(modifications to original post in red) The following is an article excerpted from yesterday's WSJ (without permission). The opinions are not my own, as I have not used Vista, yet. The author Lee Gomes is one of their technology writers:

Vista Suffers a Lot Of Criticism, but Not All of It Is Undeserved

April 25, 2007; Page B1

Is Microsoft's new Vista operating system the troubled successor to Windows XP that many people seem to believe it is? Probably not, though after running my Expand All Folders Stress Test, I have my own complaint.

(removed)

My complaint, like many involving computers, involves something not many others would care about: the apparent inability of Windows to handle very large folders, like those containing thousands of subfolders with tens of thousands of files and hundreds of gigabytes of information.

There is a shortcut in Windows Explorer that lets you expand all subfolders within a folder with a single keystroke, meaning you can then scroll up and down and see everything in the main folder, even items hidden in a sub-sub-sub directory. (This is my preferred way to tend to my music collection.)

(removed)

At first, Vista looked promising. On my command, Windows Explorer started expanding folders. But while the process started fast, it gradually slowed. By the time it got to the Zs -- or 3,597 folders later -- six minutes had gone by.

At that point, I could scroll up and down in my expanded list of folders, but slowly. The hourglass cursor wouldn't go away, and I could hear the disk drive spinning, meaning Vista was still on the case. It would take another 10 minutes for both to stop.

Being the curious sort, I wondered what my experience would be like on a Macintosh. With my home network, I copied the big folder over to a borrowed Apple and used the comparable "Expand All" feature in the Mac Finder. This is when the wow really started: All 3,600 subfolders popped open in 30 seconds.

Both the PC and Mac were recent models with powerful CPUs and plenty of memory. But maybe the Apple just had a faster disk drive. So I used the network to "mount" the PC disk drive on the Mac, without actually copying the folder, and tried the procedure again.

This time, the Mac was dealing with data physically stored on the PC, and it was needing to first go through Windows to get access to them. Even then, it did its folder expansion trick in a little over a minute and a half. So, in working with files and folders, one of a computer's most basic tasks, the Mac could do in 30 seconds what took Vista at least six minutes for, and which XP couldn't do at all.

Once you start looking for these Windows vs. Mac speed differences, it's easy to find other examples. For instance, I could shut down and then restart the Mac in the time it took either version of Windows just to switch off.

After I described my experience to them, Microsoft said I would have had better luck viewing my files in its Media Player software. As for why its file system simply wasn't more robust in the first place, it said it put its development resources in areas that affect the most people.

Despite all this, I remain a not terribly unhappy Vista upgrade user. A combination of entropy and familiarity keeps me from bolting. I also have a belief that I'd be sure to find something with the Mac to complain about as well.

Vista will slowly get better and go on to dominate computing, just like its predecessors. That's one eternal verity. Mac owners feeling aggrieved about same is another.

Plagiarism: the act of appropriating the literary composition of another author, or excerpts, ideas, or passages therefrom, and passing the material off as one's own creation

I appropriated, but did not try to pass off the original material as my own, I sourced the original author, and sourced the location of the content in my original post. You are correct that reproducing the article in its entirety was unethical, so I have removed some of the less relevant content from the original post. Anyone interested can visit the Wall Street Journal web site.

I was trying to add some high quality content to the topic, but should not have posted the entire article.

It was easier, though :).

in my personal opinion, you should get vista unlimited, because it has awesome gaming capabilities plus a bunch of other add ons that arnt necissariy needed, yet nice. my friend has home premium, which is also nice.... but if you feel like a super good vista, get unlimited (unless you dont rele feel like paying $250). all Vista packages do have bugs and rough edges tho... so i would wait till late summer to build your comp if you decide that you are dead set on getting Vista on it rather than xp.

The only things that Ultimate have but Home Premium dont are PC Backup, Fax, and Encryption, something that most home users dont need. Its really not worth the extra money unless you have some really dodgy data!
