I am talking to people whose first MMORPG was Ultima Online, Everquest, Asheron's Call, or even early Dark Age of Camelot or Anarchy Online. If you are like me you got into the game when it was brand new, Ultima Online was my first and it hooked me like a fish. Went to EQ from there, and finally Dark Age of Camelot which was my last "love" until Mythic destroyed it. Since then I have yet to find an MMO that could replicate the same feeling I had playing those games. Not sure if it was just the newness of the whole idea, or the games in general. Just seems like the old ones were better in so many ways. My recent MMO trials included LOTRO and Tabula Rasa, both of which hooked me at first but I soon got bored with.
My personal opinion is back in the day if you didn't group, you didn't level, period. It was a chore to solo, now it seems to be the norm. I think it created more of a community, whereas today's MMO's seem like single player games with built in chat.
