That's standard fare for new legislation. If we're lucky, it'll pass without any problems. As for the individual state thing, I don't think that will make a big difference.

What kind of government won't let grown adults make their own entertainment decisions? I would urge any game developer to not pander to these clowns. If the game doesn't meet Australian standards, just don't sell it in Australia.

I'm confused. What exactly is the R 18+ Bill about, and what does it want to do? Is this about banning 18+ games? The article is not very detailed.

In Australia there isn't a MATURE Rating for games. So if a game is too violent or shows too much sex, it gets banned. That means shops can't stock it. (People still play it by importing the game etc). There has been talk for years about introducing a mature rating for games (movies have them), but some idiot government people don't want to so the bill never gets passed.

Meh, I've already been forced to import many of the banned games into this country. And if that options not available, then sadly you know where I turn too - I have no other choice unfortunately. :(

Your government honestly and genuinely believes that only children play video games? Excuse me a moment while I reassure my brain cells that we are still on Planet Earth, and it's still 2012. That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Are they deliberately trying to encourage piracy, or are they honestly that stupid?

I mean that they shouldn't make an Australian version of the game, to meet those standards. The more great games that don't make it to Australia, the more pressure to change the laws.

Well some companies needed to "change" their games. For example Left for Dead 2 had the Australian version where there was no dismemberment. GUYS: don't think please that all Australians are stupid etc etc. This law hasn't been passed cause of 2 or 3 people that have their own agendas. The outcry from the gamers has always been that a mature rating is needed.

Oh, I don't. But I do think governments all over the world are more stupid than the people they are supposed to govern. :P Also, an M-rating is desperately needed. Adults are the ones with money! So in other words, get your 18+ rating, and stimulate the economy. :D

I know, and I'm saying they shouldn't. Other companies that needed to make changes to release in Australia didn't. We should see more of that.

The efforts to legislate was blocked for years by one State Attorney-General. Since they moved on there actually has been progress. Progress may be slow, but progress nonetheless.

Several other countries 'ban' video games. A complete list is on Wikipedia.

And at the same time I can't help but feel lucky that I live in a country that never censored videogames...and even if it did, retailers didn't care :P

Doesn't surprise me anymore with our Australian Govt. After all, the State govt still hasn't fixed bridges damaged from flooding 12 months ago, but built a new million dollar sport stadium. Oh and whilst the budgets are in the red , require loans to do it all. Now they have called a new state election in a short timeframe of March 2012, good luck with that. Plus they are allowed to use taxpayer dollars to fund the advertising, but rules state the opposition has to fund themselves.
We seriously need some younger people workingpolitical. Maybe the govt really need other insights. When I see Canberra news, it'sa lot of the timesolder, fat, balding men pouncing around speaking.
