Have you guys noticed how badly finished these games are lately?
Operation Flashpoint 2 - no pre release demo, you buy the game and there's no online play at launch! The movement and game feels robotic and dated, yet in all the trailers it looks fast paced. The latest patch doesn't help. We can play online now, but people have to host themselves, they will only hit start if they get 30 people in the lobby. So no dedicated servers for this game. You get shot at from miles away and wonder what just happened. The bots walking around you, they are annoying and distract you. The graphics are semi OK, the scenery is nice, but limited with draw distance, anything further than 50 mtrs has no texture, that sort of thing.
Modern Warfare 2 - IWnet is hell! No dedicated servers and you're spending most of your time looking to join, then when you do join it has a bad host and lags to hell, then spend 30 seconds trying to find a better host OR disconnects completely. The graphics look really nice, but the gameplay is let down by the technical issues. When wanting to invite a buddy, they have to quit the game and click a link through Steam. Why can't we just have everything in game???
Alien vs Predator Demo - looks amazing!!!! Spent 1 hour downloading it through Steam, again it looks to fail like MW2 with no dedicated server. Spending most of your time trying to connect. The movement is rather sluggish and when you hit jump, it's like 1ft off the ground, sorry but why is that even in the game? The graphics are definitely an improvement on the old AVP games, but the gameplay ... well just go try it for yourself from Steam. I uninstalled the demo after 15 minutes and cancelled my preorders.
Borderland - never reallly played this or looked at it, but I read up that this too was having online issues.
Settlers 6: Rise of an Empire - the gameplay is totally different to how you know it from Settlers 1 - 4. You don't have coal, gold to mine... it's just Iron. You have a knight that can magically buy the next region, so you don't extend land anymore. You're limited on how many soldiers you can train, so bye bye big nice battles. The graphics again, are very nice, but the gameplay sucks. I even read on the Settler forums with the hardcore players, they still play on the old versions!
So what the hell is everyone up to?? Making eye candy games, yet the technical issues which should have never arisen. I played Joint Operations by Novalogic for many years, nice dedicated servers for 100's of people to play online together. The game then got overun by cheats/hacks etc.
Any gaming company out there, it's not ALL about the graphics! Sort out a nice fluid connection menu and sort out dedicated servers. You make millions off us buying the game.
A word of advice for anyone out there, WAIT for a demo! Even when they pull the marketting trick of releasing the game before a demo.
I'm struggling to find any decent online games with well known names!!!
