I was wondering if there's a big difference between onboard sound and a sound card. By sound card I mean a relatively cheap one, like ~$50. The onboard I currently have is Sigmatel Onboard.

I picked up the XtremeGamer for 70. It's a pretty good card. The difference with my 5.1 speakers were huge. It's not even entirely due to the hardware - it's mainly because of the software it comes with. The X-Fi Crystalizer and other nifty tools really bring out the sound. Would I recommend it for the price? Only if it's the last thing on your list.

anything is better than onboard sound imo. when i was playing oblivion and bioshock my onboard sound would cut out all the time in both games. then i got a X-FI card and made all the differnce dosnt do that anymore and sounds better.

UUUGGGHHH!! can't find a straight answer on this question. I have a new EVGA 790I w/ on board sound and had a buddy sell me an old audigy 2 platinum with the front plug in access for my "chassis". I'm wondering if there's going to be a good amount of difference if I install this bad boy. I just keep getting this "i like coke, I like pepsi" argument.

Much love to GAmespot!!!!!

System specs

-quad core 9450

-evga 790i

-evga 260 gtx

-2 gigs corsair DDR3

A card will provide better sound if you get a good one and will take less system resource, making your pc run a little faster

Asus or Auzentech. You'll need good speakers and/or headphones though, by that i mean something that costs more than the sound card :?

Yeah that's the most important thing. If you don't have good speakers, forget about buying a sound card. They won't make a difference unless your speakers can take advantage of them.

Buy a soundcard because there is a possibilty of your onboard dying in the future.

Just make sure you dont get a creative soundcard as they install spyware.

X-Fi has some problems with Nforce 4, which might lead to ethier no sound or the occasional screech of death that may give a person above 40 a heart attack.
