Well, they are old now, but I'd say having played Quake 1-3, that every PC gamer should have played them at some point. Quake 3 still holds up but Quake 1 and 2 are a little old for todays standards :P
Other than that, I'd say Starcraft and the Half-Life series.
Definitely this. It's freeware, and runs on just about every PC out there-not to mention that it's only the greatest game ever. No excuse not to play it, unless you just don't like space adventure games. Of course, there's also System Shock(both games), Thief 1 and 2, Deus Ex, Rocket Jockey, Magic Carpet 1 and 2, MDK 1 and 2, and way too many other games that everyone should also own...NamelessPlayer
He's right, you really have no excuse not to have that game. Freespace 2 is an amazing game and easily one of the best I've ever played. That said, I'd have to nominate the Baldur's Gate series as they're pretty much the pinacle of computer rpg games.
If there was any justice in the world, you would all go out and buy Psychonauts and put the faith back into that developers life.
But, there is many games that should take a place in the "do not throw out" box.
HL1 (HL2 sucked sorry but it did, only cause I hate valve for trying to say I was stealing HL2 after I bought it 4 days before, no common sense prevailed there)
Morrowind, great RPG in FPS mode. Even better with the addons.
Civilization, any of them to be honest, if you want a game thats never the same this is one of them.
X-com games, if they do indeed run these days, but still worth having, should be able to get for very cheap prices.
for me I'd have to say its a toss betweenSim City 2000 or the original tycoongame, transport typcoon :) you can't go wrong with either of them, years of fun out of both.
the more modern game I'dsay would haveto be crysis (I know its not out yet but it should be on everyones list, I'm making the vista/ dx10jump for that game alone).

im downloading it right now to try it out. whats it about?
Starcraft. Simple as that. Works on all systems, the game is nigh-perfect. It's lengthy, balanced, and has a huge online community.
GodLovesDead
never liked starcraft, therefor i dont have it :)
Deus Ex
Its an awesome first-person shooter! Guns and armor and sharp sticks, oh my!
No, its an amazing RPG! Character interaction, skills, and an awesome plot!
Actually, its a hybrid of both! Its problably the most replayable single-player game in existence imo. Proof? I play it about 4 times a year ever since I got it bundled with my sound card...god, what a totally unexpected gem!
You're in command of a special Precursor vessel built on your little homeworld of Unzervalt, and have arrived at Sol to find out what has happened concerning a great war. Unfortunately, when you arrive at Earth, you find that it's glowing red-it's been slave-shielded, and a probe reaffirms you who won the war, sadly. After bringing some required minerals to the space station orbiting Earth, an Ilwrath ship will attack. Scrap the buggers, and then go explore various systems to encounter more alien races and mine minerals to upgrade your flagship and build additional ships. You have around five years of in-game time to destroy a ship called the Sa-Matra, which can be extended by doing certain things. You'll need to collect certain items for this purpose-those should be made apparent with some discussion with the various races. (Nevertheless, there's some missing dialogue in UQM compared to the DOS original-feel free to ask me if you need any more help.) I think that should give you a small idea of what the game is about, but the best way to learn about it is to actually play it, of course.im downloading it right now to try it out. whats it about?

red alert
well, either own or have owned.
Wahoo2k
I agree, although every game should STILL own it as it's a classic game.
If any one is still reading this. Here are some games worth owning.
New: WarCraft 3 and World Of as well, TES 4 Oblivion, STALKER, CnC, Halo 2 and FarCry(Better than HL2 because its just as good, only a year OLDER)... I can ceep on going but those are the vital once.
Old: WarCraft 1 & 2, TES 1-3, Fallout 1 & 2, Half Life 1, Quake 1-3, Monkey Island 1-3, Doom, Decent, Duke Nukem 3D and Wolfenstein 3D. Thats all i can recal right now...
Red Orchestra or even Stalker in that matter both are amazing games imhopummelweed
Red Orchestra is awesome.
C&C is good and I don't discount it's stamp on the PC industry but I think Starcraft is much more of a everyone should have tried this once game personally. That and Half life series just as a staple for benchmarking the FPS genre
Jagg3d
without westwood there wouldnt have been a starcraft, kind of seems ignorant to say that everyone should have starcraft and not a c&c game.
