A ton of my friends are into this game and I was thinking about starting to play it. Any opinions or things I should know?

It is free so it cant hurt to try it. But being free does not come without consequences. For instance it means anyone can join and getting banned doesnt really matter. I may play the game, I dislike it though. And in many of the games I played I had the misfortune of playing with someone who lacks any kind of logic when discussing, I have been called a feeder by feeders despite having a kill death ratio above 2. Then I have seen people come up with all sorts of bad ideas, and start harassing me for not agreeing with them, naturally, these ideas get them killed.
But community is not the only thing I dislike about the game, the game has a summoner level and rune system, meaning that some players are at an inherent advantage over others just because they have played more. Then there is some serious hero imbalance going around.
All said though, it is free so it cant hurt to try.
Edit: as for things you should know, well, I can tell you to avoid the summoner spells heal and revive, as they are generally useless. Master Yi is pretty beginner friendly so go with him. Oh and go for the utility mastery, as it is better than the other 2 generally.
Does it have a single player campaign?Elann2008Don't know, but this games are meant for MP mostly.... if it did it would be just some kind of tutorial...
I got into LOL by a friends advice and playing it for a month and still enjoying it. No it does not have a single player campaign the game is about pvp.
A few words about community:
I agree it does not have the greatest community but after you play some number of games (like 20 or so) you'll start to be matched with some decent people. The first lvls are full of noobs and by noobs I don't mean the "I don't know how to play the game" kind of noob, I meant "I can't do anything other than right clicking" kind of noob. It is really frustrating when you lose because of somebody in your team who don't know jack about playing games, let alone about LOL.
Also if you are playing in European servers, most of the people don't know how to speak proper english. Lack of communication hurts in this game because it relies on tactic.
That being said, after some patience and several games, if you are matched with some decent people it's a blast to play. It's addictive, and fun everytime.
About imbalances, runes and lvl:
There are e few imbalanced heroes in the game, like every pvp game. It is nothing gamebreaking and Riot is hard at work trying to fix imbalances. Also this balance problems are minor at best, which means there is nothing a good teamwork cannot beat in the game.
Also runes and lvl advantages are not that significant, it defines your playstyle more than giving you a real advantage over other heroes. Also, matchmaking usually matches you with similiar lvled people, so your rune and mastery lvls probably will be the same.
In short, it is free, go try it. If you have a friend playing, make sure to play with him to avoid most frustration of the low lvls.

I've heard from alot of people that the community is horrible.
Leage of Legends has a helpful community, I had never played DotA so I asked how things worked and three people tried explaining it to me. Anywho, LoL is a great game, especially for being a free one.

I agree with the English problem I too play on European servers and it really does annoy me when these people refuse to speak english, really preventing any teamwork from being made. Interestingly enough from my experience it is also these people that seem to be the ones that bother me the most, I was once explaining tactics and one of them said shut up in a rather aggressive tone. Saying that there are some truely amazing players who not only were great players but also great as people, these people can truly inspire a team to win not only with enormous respect but also incredible leadership, tactics and personal skill. My last game had me in a group of 4 irl friends, I laned with a feeder, the mid laner was a feeder as well, I was the only one with more kills than deaths, this was while my main priority was keeping my team alive as Taric. The team due to being 4 being irl friends, they decided to scapegoate me for their failures which was pretty hilarious actually, especially as the opponents even stated that the only one in my team that seems to have a clue was me. They couldnt argue either, with their best arguement was ur mum.
I am lvl 21 atm and I am still being grouped with people who run right into towers getting themselves killed, feeding the enemy like no tommorow. And are runes insignificant, I dont see how having 6.75% dodge, a free dagger, 30 extra spell power at the end, 4% damage reduction is insignificant. And I recently played with a lvl 3.

I sometimes try to lead the team like you said. Telling when to group up, when to gank, when to push or go baron. I'm not an exceptional player, I just know how the game works and I do it to keep the team together. Otherwise everyone does whatever the hell they want, they can't tell their intentions to other players = they're dead which equals feeded enemy team . I always try to keep my cool, even against super annoying players who knows only the word "Noob" in english. Like you said, sometimes I encounter very respectable players, who can communicate and cooperate, if my team can do that, I don't care if we lose or win because it would be a fun game.
By insignificant I meant, runes won't make you win an undeserved game or vice versa. Runes are significant when all the players know excatly what they are doing, so in that scenario, runes will matter and have a great impact. But if you have a feeder lanebuddy who likes to towerdive for just that last hit and dies everytime, no rune can make you win that game.
About matchmaking, I played with a lvl 6 with 6 wins and a lvl 30 with 250+ wins a few days ago, both in the same team. I'm lvl 20 myself. Matchmaking started to screw up only after the last patch. Before that I was almost always matched people with similiar lvls. But you are right, matchmaking is a mess right now.

Ok by that runes are significant, an idiot with power is still an idiot after all. And do you know how much as a Taric/Sona player I hate thefeeder lanebuddies who likes to towerdive. If I dont towerdive with them to restore their measly 90 lost hp they will call me a noob and I will be the scapegoat for the rest of the game, even if I heal them easily for the rest of the game. If I do run in both of us get shot down, with 0 kills because the fleer used flash or ghost.
I play it religously lol, for about 10 months now? Its a great game, with a huge variety of heroes available but not all are viable. They need to work on balancing rather than pumping out heroes. The biggest problem I have with the game is the lack of a replay system STILL! It cannot be competitive at an Esports level until they get this feature up and running.
If you don't care about getting pro at the game, then the lack of replays won't bother you. If thats the case give it a go seeing as it is free. However if you are on the EU server be prepared for a poor service server stability wise, the server is gash. If you are on NA server your in luck, its much better,
