Well, my HD has an issue that after posting it on another forum site, I got no luck. (www.cheathappens.com/show_board2.asp?headID=85092&titleID=8463) Its a 7200.11 Seagate Barracuda. I think this is the issue (http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=firmware_news&thread.id=1) and here is a possible solution (www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128807) .

The manufacturer sent the OS pre-installed on the damaged drive, my question is, will I be able to install the OS on a new drive without formating the faulty one?

Thanks in advance.

I don't see what you're asking.... Are you saying you got a bad drive and so want to install the OS on a drive that works? If so you can instal the OS on any drive you wish, i think the legal ruling is you can only use it on one PC (whole PC not HDD) at the same time though.

Yeah it came pre-installed but I can't use it, so I want to buy a new HD without having to buy an OS.

So you didn't get an OS disk? Just ask who ever you bought it from to replace it ofcourse that's what you should always do with faulty hardware.

I was in a similar situation... I had a downloaded version of Vista from years back and no installation disc, but I did have my serial... if you have Vista (64-bit or 32-bit)... got to THIS SITE... it ask you for your serial and you can buy a replacement disc directly from microsoft for $10 (I just did this and it is genuine)...

They also send you two copies (1 32-bit, 1 64-bit)... If you don't have Vista though, I have no idea... maybe they have a recovery program like this for XP... Or you could just download Windows 7 on another PC and use that...

I have the disk. The OS came pre-installed on a damaged drive and I can't acess it (can't use it, format it, w/e). I was wondering if I install the OS on a new drive, will it be legal?

Yeah, you can use the Key for your OS as many times as you want...

I would highly recommend the Western Digital Cavier Black 1TB for your replacement, I bought a couple of Cavier Greens and one was DOA (like a signifigant portion of the reviews on newegg) so stay away from the Cavier Green version.

Traditionally it's more Newegg that ties in with dead drives, not the Greens. We use a ton of them in servers and they've been statistically fine.
