How fast can you get a c2d e6300 (1.86ghz) to be?

Depends on your cooling, your motherboard, and your RAM.

With stock cooling not very far because the e6300 only has a 7x multiplier. If you're on a budget, get the Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, you could probably hit 3.0ghz with decent temps. Note if you take the e6300 that far, you're going to have to add a lot of extra voltage. If you don't want to do that, get an e4300, b/c it has a 9x multiplier. The only difference between it and the e6300 is that the e6300 is a conroe and the e4300 is an allendale, so their rated fsb speeds are different, and so are their multipliers.

I recommend the e4300 more than the e6300 for a first time overclocker.

That's cool, you should be fine with the stock heat sink fan. Just don't go too high and monitor your temps.

When overclocking, I always advise to use a aftermarket heatsink. Good budget one is arctic cooling freezer 7 pro.

You can push it to # ghz on air, but you would have to raise the voltage. If you dont want to you get get pass ~2.3 ghz or so.

I own an E6320 on my other rig. I am able to get it to 2.4 easily without raising the voltage. I stopped there cause I don't want to try and push my 667 ram any further. This is on a D975XBX, so no raising the voltage without a mod.

I am using a Thermaltake Blue Orb2 and my idle temps are in the low 30's to high 20's depending on the room temp.

Having 3gb of ram doesnt matter, its how fast the ram is. For instance, if your ram is value ram that's clocked at 667mhz, the best FSB you could get would be 333 (x7 = 2.33ghz) without overclocking the ram. Overclocking value ram may not be wise because you would have to go beyond specified voltage etc...

So what is your ram speed and the timings etc...? preferably link it on newegg. Your motherboard is very nice for OCing tho, so it will depend on your ram.
